Richmond Hill Queens is home to three ethnic immigrant groups from three different countries; Guyana, Trinidad and the Punjab region of India.
The Deal: “Doubles” as they are usually called, or in Trinidad “Barra” is a sandwich using two pieces of roti/naan style bread filled with a curried chick pea mixture, topped with tamarind and pepper sauce.
It’s full of flavor and the tamarind adds a nice spice that is not overpowering. You can find several Caribbean & West Indian restaurants in Richmond Hill and Ozone Park that sell these, usually priced between $1 – $1.50. The main street is Liberty Ave between the Van Wyck Exp and Woodhaven Blvd. It’s an easy stop to or from JFK.
