Not many Holt novels are available for Kindle, but there are many Dorothy Edens to fill the void, and I think this one does it best. It has the classic dark, Bryronic masculinity ruling over an isolated house, complete with haunted room, sounds in the night, a hysterical woman, mysterious strangers, and even death. But this is no cobbled-together potboiler. It is a jewel of the genre. The characters change as the book progresses, a sure sign of good storytelling, and your opinion changes, too.
It is a compelling mystery, indeed, and you often find yourself changing your mind - at times becoming unsure of what you even want to be the truth - right up to a satisfying end.
Positive Representation Matters
Here, her talents are at her best. A wonderful read for the coming Autumn evenings. I look forward to find more of these wonderful Gothic novels by Dorothy Eden.
Sarah Mildmallow is anything but mild. She investigates, but finds that the mother is far from lovable, and that Lord Mallow locks his bedroom door. Will Cpusin Ambrose write with evidence that would destroy this fragile family? Who is the mysterious seamstress who is so poor at needlework? Does the dark and brooding Lord Mildmay have amnesia, or is he a rank imposter? Will Sarah be cast out from the man and son she has begun to love? A ghost, a murder, shipwrecks, and teasing over the brandy make it a page turner.
After reading several of her books, I found this one slow going.
Lady of Mallow
Characters seemed like others in past books. And the editing was atrocious! Consistently used "chat" for "that".
