In fact you're probably the most normal of the lot and, let's face it, even you're not that normal. In this intense detective thriller instilled with philosophical, religious, and social commentary, Dostoevsky studies the psychological impact upon a desperate and impoverished student when he murders a despicable pawnbroker, transgressing moral law to ultimately "benefit humanity".

Exiled to four years in Siberia, but hailed by the end of his life as a saint, prophet, and genius, Fyodor Dostoevsky holds an exalted place among the best of the great Russian authors. In examining one of the defining events of the twentieth century, Doris L. Bergen situates the Holocaust in its historical, political, social, cultural, and military contexts. Unlike many other treatments of the Holocaust, this revised, third edition discusses not only the persecution of the Jews, but also other segments of society victimized by the Nazis: Are mass violence and catastrophes the only forces that can seriously decrease economic inequality?
To judge by thousands of years of history, the answer is yes. Tracing the global history of inequality from the Stone Age to today, Walter Scheidel shows that inequality never dies peacefully. Inequality declines when carnage and disaster strike and increases when peace and stability return. The Great Leveler is the first book to chart the crucial role of violent shocks in reducing inequality over the full sweep of human history around the world. A predecessor to such monumental works such as Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov , Notes From Underground represents a turning point in Dostoyevsky's writing towards the more political side.
In this work, we follow the unnamed narrator of the story, who, disillusioned by the oppression and corruption of the society in which he lives, withdraws from that society into the underground. Internationally renowned psychiatrist, Viktor E. Frankl, endured years of unspeakable horror in Nazi death camps. During, and partly because of his suffering, Dr.

Frankl developed a revolutionary approach to psychotherapy known as logotherapy. At the core of his theory is the belief that man's primary motivational force is his search for meaning. Also known as Demons , The Possessed is a powerful socio-political novel about revolutionary ideas and the radicals behind them. It follows the career of Pyotr Stepanovich Verkhovensky, a political terrorist who leads a group of nihilists on a demonic quest for societal breakdown. They are consumed by their desires and ideals, and have surrendered themselves fully to the darkness of their "demons".
This possession leads them to engulf a quiet provincial town and subject it to a storm of violence.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky is a titanic figure among the world's great authors, and The Brothers Karamazov is often hailed as his finest novel. A masterpiece on many levels, it transcends the boundaries of a gripping murder mystery to become a moving account of the battle between love and hate, faith and despair, compassion and cruelty, good and evil.
When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity.

Cloning, feel-good drugs, anti-aging programs, and total social control through politics, programming, and media: With a storyteller's genius, he weaves these ethical controversies in a compelling narrative that dawns in the year A. After Ford, the deity. Lukianoff and Haidt offer a comprehensive set of reforms that will strengthen young people and institutions, allowing us all to reap the benefits of diversity, including viewpoint diversity. Ordinary Men is the true story of Reserve Police Batallion of the German Order Police, which was responsible for mass shootings as well as roundups of Jewish people for deportation to Nazi death camps in Poland in Browning argues that most of the men of RPB were not fanatical Nazis but, rather, ordinary middle-aged working-class men who committed these atrocities out of a mixture of motives, including the group dynamics of conformity, deference to authority, role adaptation, and the altering of moral norms to justify their actions.
Very quickly three groups emerged within the battalion: While this book discusses a specific Reserve Unit during WWII, the general argument Browning makes is that most people succumb to the pressures of a group setting and commit actions they would never do of their own volition. Ordinary Men is a powerful, chilling, and important work with themes and arguments that continue to resonate today. A testament to the potential for evil within us all, as well as a warning of the price of Silence and passivity in everyday life.
Skillfully written and meticulous researched, the author argues and answers counter arguments with tenacity yet dispassion.
An important message for all mankind to remind us that a brutal concentration guard resides in us all should we but allow it room to grow. The narrator is superb and I would listen to him read the phone book with rapt attention. Maybe could have used a better reader, but overall well worth the buy. This book is an excellent insight into the heart of mankind's darkest side. Great book backed by research and factual historic accounting. As you listen to Ordinary Men, you will be forced to reflect on your life, your choices, and wonder how you would have acted, had you been in the position of the German police.
You will be forced to come to the truth, kicking and screaming. That truth is that you would have carried out your orders and shot countless innocents. The book is well read and organized in a way that makes it easy to follow events. It would be great to have a more concise boiled-down bullet point summary of what they agree and disagree on. A very heavy book, but one of those books that everyone should read.
Very important to understand this part of history and Browning does an excellent job leading the reader through this portion of WWII. Definitely worth the money and time.
