I even got to take care of the house for two weeks, while they went on a family vacation. Flores is a wonderful island, everywhere you go you will be surrounded by beautiful nature and with three days off every week, you can easily explore the entire island. There are many good hiking trails and it is very easy, and fun, to hitchhike! Magnus and Konswan are very kind and openminded people and I really enjoyed the time we spend together!

They have 10 years of experience with Permaculture and farming, they have a lot of knowledge that they are happy to share and I learned so much from them. I would recommend that you stay for at least two months, it seemed like the perfect amount of time for me, I could see how all the plants that I planted started growing, I got to see the entire island and meet amazing people. I stayed with Magnus and Konswan and the kids, Odin and Mitra from the 7th to the 30th of March , during my University holidays.

The experience was unforgettable! The Ilha das Flores is a magical place, but like most areas in the north it can be quite rainy in March. I was very happy that they organized a packing list with all the essentials, which makes it very easy to be prepared for any situation on Flores. I was also lucky to have many sunny and warm days to see all the amazing nature that the island has to offer. Not only is the island a nature-filled wonder, but so is Magnus and Konswans land! Their place is located in the beautiful Ribiera da Fazenda, close to the city of Santa Cruz das Flores.

Working for them was an experience full of hard work but also fun and laughter! They are very organized and know what needs to get done, which I find important as a wwoofer to have many different jobs from which to learn. We they usually host two wwoofers, and I was very lucky to share my stay with a danish wwoofer, Sofie were able to do a lot the important jobs that need to be done in spring time, such as weeding, clearing the land, preparing it for the next season of veggies and of course seeding: I also learned a lot about the importance of the location in which to put the plants, which plays a big role in a mountainous region.

Konswan and Magnus are very knowledged when it comes to plants, permaculture, homesteading, anything biology etc. We celebrated this with a bonfire, and this night to me will be unforgettable! Thank you Magnus and Konswan for planing things like these, and always involve your wwoofers: They are also very flexible and will try to help as much as possible, so that you can see and explore the island: D All in all, it is exactly what I hoped for when I decided to wwoof.

The only thing that was missing is more time! This year I got the chance to stay at Flores Permaculture for about one month november And I really loved it! It was my first woofing experience and I enjoyed it a lot. Mangnus, Konswan and the boys are wonderful people. They include you from day one!

I can strongly recommend going to their place. In my periode, we where to woofers at Flores Permaculture they host max. We had a 7 hours day, and worked four days a week the weekend and monday where off and we could travel around the island. Work started at nine o' clock.

At around 12 o' clock we got lunch and had a one hour break. After that we went on working until five. So we fed the chicken, took a shower and went into the house for dinner. After dinner, we often talked orplayed a little bit with the boys. When we went back to the cabana it was already dark and we spent the evening with talking together, reading, writing diary or went to bed early.

The work can be quite hard, there is always forrest cleaning to do, but it is also very fun and we had different things to do, like forrest cleaning, harvesting fruits and vegetables, helping in the kitchen, digging a drain. While staying at Magnus and Konswans place, you will live in the "Woofer cabana" a cozy little wooden cabin. You will have fresh water and a compost toilet which was definitifely a new experience for me and probably the fact I was most anxious about, but do not worry it works quite well!

The cabana has to floors and you will sleep in the second floor on a big madrass. The first three weeks of my stay I did share the cabin and the sleeping spot with another woofer, so be prepared that you might not be alone but again, that was no problem at all! We prepared breakfast by ourselves in the cabana.

You can go to the grocery stores in Santa Cruz for buying stuff you want for breakfast, or you eat what the farm provides.

There wil always be some fresh eggs from the chicken which are your nearest neighbors or sweat potatoes which are really yummy, if you ask me. Lunch and dinner will be eaten together with the family in the house. Konswan is the main chef there and preparing a lot of veeeeery tasty food with a lot of nutritions for you.

If you want to learn anything about cooking, just ask, they will gladly tell you. Anyway, if you are wondering about anything on the farm, ask and you will get a lot of information and learn a lot! When planning to go to the azores I did nearly not know anything about the islands.

Flores is the westernmost island and especially in winter time you can expect some bad weather, like strong winds and rain.

In the beginning of november it was still quite warm, I would suggest around degrees and at night at least over 15 degrees. The water temperature lies around 17 degrees, which will say that you actually can swim the whole year round. If you get all over wet or the weather is too bad, Magnus and Konswan will find work inside for you. They have a washing machine and can wash your clothes frequently, so do not worry about that.

The farm is placed in Fazenda de Santa Cruz, a little village, about four kilometers from the airport. In the week, there are driving some busses around the island not that many, so you have to plan when and where you want to go. You can always get to Santa Cruz, where you can find some museums I recommend the whaling factory museum grocery stores and swimming areas.

The people on the island are very friendly and the other woofer, a girl from Italy, told me that it is very easy to hitchhike on the island though I have not tried it , but it might be an opportunity for you to travel around in the weekends. There are a lot of hiking trials where you can see the fascinating nature of Flores. Otherwise you can rent a car or scooter in Santa Cruz or take a daytrip to the neighborisland Corvo with the ferry on Saturdays.

We really got a good picture I think of what life is like there, and in some way what living on a farm is like although every farm is different. So where to begin.. The first thing that struck us was of course the remote location and the incredible nature and purity of the place, Flores is a stunning island. Its tucked into a valley with lots of beautiful trees and jungle.

Upstairs is where its really cosy, there is a loft with an old mattress to sleep on, for us it was fine but if you have back problems or really need a great mattress you should maybe bring your own. There where a few woolly blankets and something that can be used as a pillow but its definitely good to bring a sleeping bag.

The toilet is a compost toilet and it is outside and very basic, there is no roof so you will have to use an umbrella when its raining. We were doing a lot of land clearing to prepare it for planting new crops. We also did some planting of Banana and Taro and even some chain sawing which was awesome to learn. And sometimes we got to go on walks with Odin and Mitra the kids which was so much fun, they are the cutest.

We felt very comfortable working for Magnus and Konswan, they were always positive about the work we did and were thankful for it, they told us it was fine to take breaks and listen to our bodies. They also cooked lunch and dinner for us, which was very nice and I appreciated it very much not to have to think about that. I found it really interesting to hear about their point of view and found that they are very conscientious. I ended up eating vegetarian at the farm, eating local cheese, dairy products and the eggs from the chickens and guinea fowls to complement my diet and we also bought quite a lot of food at the supermarket like fruit, sometimes bread and spreads, cookies, dried figs, chocolate, oats for breakfast.

For us that felt necessary to be comfortable but that is different from person to person. What I would also like to say is that Magnus and Konswan are very open and flexible and nice people to talk to if you have any difficulties. One of the things that surprised me was the weather, I had this idea of a tropical sunny island, but that is not what Flores was at the time we were there.

It was very rainy and windy and chilly sometimes, although we had some beautiful sunny, warm days. Luckily that was not all we came for, the silence, the nature, the people, the learning experience. Oh yeah,bring some really nice warm clothes, cotton clothes got really cold and humid, bring woolly or polyester clothes, and maybe some thermal underwear.
