Broken #1
His parents are absolutely evil and they end up cutting him off in order to get him to come back home. However, despite this and all their struggles they still manage to be together. Fast forward a year later, they are engaged, happy, and find out they are going to have a baby. A day before their wedding arrives tragedy strikes and Gwen is left alone, homeless, and completely broken. Unfortunately, Gwen's mother and Caleb's family, refuse to help her or take her in.
That's when Caleb's brother Nathan steps in. When he discovers Gwen pregnant and living in near poverty, Nathan offers to take her in and take care of her. Nathan is a very complex character with extremely unusual habits. He wears gloves due to an extreme case of verminophobia, which we find out the reason for later in the book.
Broken (Broken, #1) by A.E. Murphy
He is harsh and rude. He is hot and cold and all in all a very mysterious character. There were several times where I wanted to smack the shit out of him and have Gwen run for the hills, however, the boy knew how to grovel and beg for forgiveness. She's pregnant with her recently deceased fiance's child and you expect her to just fall so easily for someone else? I totally understood her reluctance, guilt, and inability to move on. If it had been easy for her I think it would have been difficult for me to like her but I loved Gwen and completely understood where she was coming from.
Guilt encompasses me in a relentless embrace as I realize I like having my hand there, I like being in Nathan's company. I'm not sure if it's because of some strange attachment issues now his brother's gone but I feel it all the same. The book ends with a cliffy but thankfully the next book is already out so I don't have to wait to find out what happens next.
I will say that I have a theory about Caleb and if I am right I'd love nothing more than to bring him back from the dead and drop kick him in the nuts and kill him all over again. Honestly, when I first started it I thought it was going to be a DNF because in the first few pages we get one of the worst cases of insta-love that I've read in awhile.
I'm so glad I stuck through the first few chapters though because I was greatly rewarded! Gwen meets Caleb on the beach. They fall in love at first sight. This is where the insta love kicks in-gag me! It's not easy for them to be together with her bitch of a mother and his completely evil parents. After Caleb's parents cut him off he and Gwen struggle on their own but they do it and are happily in love.
Fast-forward a year later. They are engaged, happy, and after a rough beginning find out they are going to be parents. Everything is going great until their wedding day arrives and tragedy struck. My whole world feels like it has just collapsed. Nothing seems to matter apart from the fact he has gone. Like I literally was sobbing my eyes out. I had to sit my kindle down because I could not see my kindle screen. After tragedy struck Gwen is left lost, alone, afraid, and homeless with a baby coming in a few short months. She had zero help and her mother disowned her. She is desperate and doesn't know what to do.
That it until Nathan shows up. The only time Gwen has met Nathan has been when Nathan punched Caleb in the face and told Gwen to "get rid" of the baby. Nathan is a part of Caleb's life along with his parents that he doesn't talk about. Caleb always warned Gwen to stay away from Nathan but when she's living out of her car and has no hope for her and her baby's future she has to accept Nathans offer to help. He is clearly unstable, he has serious control issues that I'm not sure I want to deal with.
He wears gloves because he is afraid of germs. He is hot and cold. He shows zero emotion. He is mysterious and very private. He is anti-social and an introvert. But Nathan is also very tall, dark, and sexy. However at times, he was a dick with a capital D! When he wants to hurt someone he knows the exact words to cut the deepest and I wanted Gwen to smash his head in on numerous occasions. And then when we think he has changed. But still, I loved him. I guess I'm a sucker for an ant-hero.
Nathan stole my heart even though he was a mysterious asshole.
I just wanted Gwen to unravel his past and his secrets. He was the complete opposite of Caleb. I mean, I liked Caleb but I loved Nathan. There were so many mysteries and secrets surrounding Caleb, Nathan, and family and at the end when Gwen uncovers a very big one It totally explained why Nathan is the way he is. The entire family is one huge riddle and trust me when I say, they're a riddle you don't want to solve. It was frustrating because it kept her from really ever opening herself to Nathan when I wanted so bad for her to do so. But after getting upset at her for being this way, I would stop and understand, she needed time and after what she went through, it was understandable.
Guilt encompasses me in a relentless embrace as I realize I like having my hand there, I like being in Nathans company. I have to say even though it took the first chapter for me to get sucked into this book, I still really liked the authors writing style. The beginning felt a little rushed but the rest of the story especially with Gwen and Nathan really took it's time and made me really invest in these two. I just wished Gwen would wake up and realize that Caleb isn't coming back to her and Nathan has so much to give her and Dillon because behind all the gloves, and secrets, and pain, and rudeness there is something worth fighting and I think by the end Gwen started finally seeing that I wanted to throw my kindle after that cliffhanger I need more, I need book two like now!
Overall, I would definitely recommend this lovely hidden gem because I loved it! Great story, interesting characters, and a plot that kept me glued to my kindle. There is heartbreak, sadness, some mystery, and romance. But I definitely would've paid just to read this story and I can't wait for book two! View all 6 comments. ARC kindly provided for a honest review. I know what people think when then see that the book has been given for a honest review and the reviewer has given a 5star rating Cos I think the same. That maybe the book ain't worth all the stars but they feel they should rate it high anyway. That might seem harsh, but still. We all think it. In this case, that's not it at all!! This book deserved all 5stars hands down!! It's touches two very sore subjects which I think the author handled fab! Tissue ARC kindly provided for a honest review.
See a Problem?
You have been warned!! I have high hopes for the next book. Feb 02, Carolina rated it it was ok Shelves: La cosa iba TAN genial que al sobrepasar un acontecimiento clave, se ha desinflado. You smiled at nothing. I knew I was yours. They meet, the laugh, they love. They are instantly connected to each other. No evil parents, no broody brother, no lack of money will keep them apart.
She can feel him hiding something. Caleb can't tell his love he is sick, that he is dying. As they fall asleep in each other's, Gwen never expects that she will lose the love of her life in her arms that very moment. Heartwrenching is all I can say when Gwen wakes up with her forever love gone As Gwen tries to piece her life together, she finds herself in the darkest place imaginable. No home, no family to help her, no money Through the darkness, help from the least expected appears Gwen promised Caleb to never be near Nathan, to avoid him at all costs.
What choice does she have? She has to think of her unborn baby. He needs what Nathan Is offering. As Gwen accepts Nathan's offer of a home and safety she also has to accept the secrets Nathan is hiding. As their lives form some sort of normalcy, feeling start developing.
Both fight them, Gwen knows she can't be with Caleb's brother, but her heart says she needs him. Nathan learns he loves and needs Gwen, he will protect her and keep her at all costs. Their lives of normalcy ends in an instant, when Gwen finds the secret that has held Nathan captive within his own demons.
The ending of this emotional Rollercoaster is unbelievable I never saw this coming. My mind had to start the next book immediately. View all 8 comments. I downloaded this book with a bunch of other freebies off of Amazon and had my eye on it, not really sure if I wanted to read it or not since I'd been on a roller coaster of almost intolerable books as of late, but when I saw this book on my newsfeed, I thought to give it a shot.
And I'm so glad that I did! The book for me starts off slow and mostly uneventful for me anyways. I do enjoy first love stories but not if it begins with insta-love between the couple. I was willing to reserve judgemen I downloaded this book with a bunch of other freebies off of Amazon and had my eye on it, not really sure if I wanted to read it or not since I'd been on a roller coaster of almost intolerable books as of late, but when I saw this book on my newsfeed, I thought to give it a shot.
I was willing to reserve judgement on Gwen as we'd really yet to see her character grow and develop, but I almost had an instant dislike for Caleb because I felt he was somewhat creepy with his almost manic behaviour. Not to mention, I wasn't a fan of his mood alleviating when he would get ill cause Gwen would have to look after him or for the fact that he had pressured Gwen into having a baby when she wasn't ready.
Caleb to me was a needy little boy. Its not until Nathan enters the scene that I feel like the story picks up for me. From the get go, you know there are some dark and underlying issues that he's struggling with. Reading the interactions between him and Gwen when she first moves in, I kinda got a Rochester vibe from him, and couldn't help but laugh at some of the things that he would say, though my brows would rise at some of the other things he said and did. And boy, let me tell you about the heart ache.
I'm not gonna lie and say I didn't cry in this book. Nathan is such a tortured soul and the heartbreak I felt for him while reading was enough to have me whimpering and lying in bed all day, not even bothering to leave the room until I had read every last dark secret of his. While I had my suspicions, actually reading about it had my heart hurting for him. But it wasn't just that, my whole heart ached for both Nathan and Gwen and the situation that they found themselves in, not because I found it impossible for them to be together because he was the brother of her dead fiance I actually thought Gwen was being a bit stubborn in using him as a shield , but because with all these issues and an unwillingness both in Gwen and Nathan to talk to someone about their demons, it would always lie between them and stop them from grasping the happiness they so desperately need.
Overall, I found this a totally enjoyable, four and a half star read. The only reason why I'm not rating it a full five stars are for the glaring mistakes within the book that took away from my reading pleasure. Normally, I can overlook minor mistakes, but it seemed that every time the book mentioned someone 'standing' or 'sitting', it would mixup the tenses.
Not to mention, using 'petrol' to replace 'gas' made no sense at all, especially as it was colloquially referring to a bodily function. There are other similar mistakes but you get the gist of what I'm saying. Other than that, this book was amazing. I would totally recommend it to everyone and I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel. Jul 16, Shannon rated it really liked it. My only complaint is the pregnancy dates. At one point in the book She tells a friend that she has 18 weeks left and then several days later she tells Nathan that she has 19 weeks left..
Jul 08, Elodie rated it did not like it Shelves: I can't put up with so much nonsense. I need to process this book that I just read and I don't even know how. My skin is literally prickling after reading this novel and between the ending and the preview of book 2 I am left shaken, confused and hoping Nathan isn't as crazy as I think he is, because from germaphobe to killer is quite a bracket.
Broken by Lies
This story has three distinct tones that you might miss because you are so wrapped up in the story line. There is the light and fluffy bordering on unrealistic beginning, the changes and growt I need to process this book that I just read and I don't even know how. There is the light and fluffy bordering on unrealistic beginning, the changes and growth in the middle and the convoluted and uncertain ending. I was tempted to stop reading when I began because the beginning wasn't the most solid of starts. It felt very naive and filled with childish fantasies and actions, so I was skeptic while wondering who are these Disney kids?
Then everything goes to hell and I literally see the story switch to heartache and unbearable pain. They might not have fell but my eyes did quite the job today at holding my tears at bay. One more painful description and I'd have been weeping like a baby. We moved into a more mature setting until we finally transitioned into the unpredictable ending and even more frightening preview.
I connected with every single one of the main characters. Caleb was the fun, fairy tale side and I loved and missed him with every bone in my body. There will never be enough time passed for you to forget this character. I was depressed with her and felt every pity stare and brick wall to a shelter. I thought her silly at first but she completely won me over. She was loyal, fierce, opinionated and real. Yes, she's hormonal but she respected herself and Caleb even when he was no longer around. She had literally found her soul mate and no matter what any one else says I will always love him for her.
There is no man in the world like Caleb and even though we might learn some of his secrets in the next novel people can change and he did. We never saw a bad side. He was the loving, caring, compassionate boyfriend to the point of being selfish. Prevention is better than cure and he could have prevented half the pain Gwen endured if he had prepared properly and spoke to her about what they were really up against.
Though I am irrevocably in love with Caleb this story has two sides and the lead for the next is Nathan. I like Nathan but I don't trust him. It took not only Gwen, but myself as a reader, time to warm to his character and before I know it, I was acclimating to his current role and medical condition. What came at the end though just stirred me even more and got me wondering what will happen next.
His next move will determine if I continue to get to know and like him or loathe him forever. It's impossible to not get tangled up in this story. The characters are real, their decisions are tough but their own and resentment runs rampant with hate and indifference. The sex in this novel is virginal and is PG at best. It was all about the story line and I love that.
We followed the lost of a promising life; a single, homeless, unemployed almost widow trying to get by and a man with a literal vault of secrets and quite the mental illness. Once this story picks up speed, it doesn't slow. It holds you and dare you to take this journey across the pond.
As usual, nothing beats a good UK novel written by someone from the UK or at the very least, with a strong hold in their culture. The dialect was definitely British and I love using my dictionary as I sorted through British slang. It was an emotional roller coaster and I didn't wanna get off this ride. This is normally when I know a book is good and has you right where it wants you. I was surprised at the authors age because the pain and struggles were real and spoke of more worldly experience than her 23 years.
All the same though, congratulations on tapping and unlocking some intense feelings and reactions. Jul 07, Nawal rated it it was amazing Shelves: This has encompassed any expectations I had before I started reading. I am in absolute awe of what I just experienced in this story. I laughed, I cried and I fell in love with a book. That's the only way I can describe it. I love when I discover new authors that I have never really heard about and the talent that shines through the book is something I absolutely cherish. I couldn't give this any less than 5 stars because that's what it most definitely deserves.
The story is set in England, s This has encompassed any expectations I had before I started reading. The story is set in England, somewhere near London not any place I have ever seen and it is told from the eyes of the main character Gwen. So one day Gwen is walking along some beach and she happens to meet Caleb and it's almost like love at first sight. Now I would be lying if I said I didn't find it cheesy at first and one thing I hate is instant love, but as the story goes along, I began to accept it because it fits in with the storyline.
So Gwen and Caleb become inseparable, he's the perfect man and one you can only dream about. Her world revolves around him and his hers. After a couple of years things go downhill and she finds herself with boxes of all her belongings in her car with no where to go and a baby in the making.
But help finds her in the most least likely of all places, in the form of Caleb's older brother; Nathan. Now my heart broke when things first began to go in the wrong direction. It was so perfectly written than anyone would feel the heartbreak that Gwen experienced. I usually tend to avoid books that have too much pain composed in them because you as a reader experience every emotion along with the character in the book and I get way too emotional over books so you can imagine I bawled like a baby.
But I still don't regret this book. Nuh-uh not one bit. Then things begin to look up for Gwen but like real life, good things don't last and she has to deal with her fair share of drama. That is another thing I admired, the grasp on reality the story possessed. This is no fairy tale. But don't think this story is all that depressing. There were some very entertaining interactions between Gwen and Nathan, I constantly found myself giggling like a muppet at what I was reading.
Gwen is a heroine worthy of admiration. After the hell she goes through, she's still carrying on with her life. I think I have to point out, that the story enfolded in detail between Gwen and Nathan, and that is what made it so good in the end. The ending totally tore me. The girl can't seem to catch a break. She really doesn't deserve all the shit people give her but I guess one of the morals of this story is that you're alone in your journey of life. I recommend this to everyone! Some parts though in the story were pretty good, like how much Jet wanted her, and how Ummmm Some parts though in the story were pretty good, like how much Jet wanted her, and how complicated it is to move on from a really bad past relationships, but the book overall needs work.

When he meets Natalie, she is not falling for any of his tricks to get her into bed. May 30, Season rated it did not like it. I really tried to read this one, even almost finished, but when I figured out it wasn't going to end for another 5 books or so, I just gave up. It was a great idea for a story, although I have read similar, but the writing wasn't very good, the way the story was laid out needed some work and I just didn't see how it was going to get any better. The story wasn't bad.. That's not why I gave the 2 star review. That's because the book barely got going and it finished.
It was extremely short. I then realised its one story split over several very short books! I don't mind sets of books when they are proper books but I object to paying for pages several times over. What a rip off!! Jan 12, Kl rated it really liked it. This book was good but there wasn't really anything in it to make me want to continue reading the series. It was about 2 college kids. She had her boyfriend cheat on her with her childhood best friend and roommate.
He was a playboy. That's pretty much the whole story.. Jet meets a girl he can't have and keeps trying anyway. Natalie was burned bad by her ex and her ex bff.
If You Stay
She finally sleeps will Jet after she realizes she had feelings for him, but it's nervous about the next day. Liked it This is most definitely not my normal genre but I have to say the characters are very real life in their life choices and personalities. Might finish the rest of the series in the future. Wow I didn't really think I would like this book but I do.
I think it's right up my alley because the character is in college and they are not full blown adults. I like how it tells the story for the boy and the girls perspective and not just the girls; making it one sided. Spitting is nasty There was not a lot of flow but the description of the sexual encounter was awful. Anyone who thinks spitting on a woman during sex is nasty.
Turned off completely ruined everything. Apr 28, Kayleigh Davies rated it did not like it Shelves: Oh god sorry but this was terrible. It was very poorly written and the dialogue was awful. I hate leaving reviews like this because I know someone worked hard to write this but honestly it was bad. Not sure how it has high reviews. I really want to like these characters but I am struggling. I do care more for Jet by the end of this book.
