And even though Sex and the City actor and activist Cynthia Nixon lost the Democratic primary for Governor of New York to Andrew Cuomo, she too succeeded in raising awareness for democratic socialism. If candidates like Ocasio-Cortez and Salazar prove victorious in November, that trend is likely to continue. The term generally refers to collectively-owned businesses and forms of government, in which workers and government entities have more control over the means of production and distribution of goods, versus the private ownership and free market that drives capitalism.

They generally support ideas such as labor reform and pro-union policies, tuition-free public universities and trade schools, universal healthcare, federal jobs programs, fair taxation that closes loopholes that the wealthiest citizens have found, and using taxes on the rich and corporations to pay for social welfare programs. Of course the Democratic Socialists of America website has a whole page on this very question , as do the campaign websites for Ocasio-Cortez and Salazar , as well as that of Senator Bernie Sanders, another prominent democratic socialist.

The DSA is the latest incarnation of a long-running socialist movement in America that dates back to the turn of the 20th century. The Socialist Party of America was established in The party elected more than 1, candidates at the state, local and federal level before World War I. Its candidates ran against both Democrats and Republicans, but its life as a third party essentially fell apart when the group succumbed to internal divisions in the early s.

Isserman explains how it stymied groups like SDS: All these people pour in bringing in new energy and ideas, [but it was] hard to say what [those ideas were]. By , it had splintered into small and internally embattled factions. Its organizers believed it could be more useful as what some have called basically a lobbying group to the Democratic Party, pushing the mainstream liberal party further left.

Poverty in the United States. His biographer Isserman, who is a member of the group, describes Harrington as a charismatic mainstream media pundit who came to be a go-to source on the subject: Poverty as well as Mr. Socialism, the guy you went to to learn about poverty. The simple answer is that democratic socialists believe in a democracy , while communist forms of government are not democracies. The statement also reiterated the DSA's support for the liberation of the Palestinian people.

In , the DSA issued a statement of solidarity with Venezuela. The statement called the sanctions placed on Venezuela by the Obama administration unjust and illegal. It called for the United States to cease its interference in Venezuelan affairs, saying: A statement issued in April called the intervention by the Trump administration both a violation of domestic and international law. In the same statement, the DSA called for protests of Trump's actions and for the lobbying of Congress to halt any further intervention.

The DSA maintains itself as an anti-racist and anti-fascist organization. The DSA connects this fight with fascist groups to its broader struggle against capitalism, saying on its website: We also believe that the wider system of racist oppression can be defeated, but only with the ending of the capitalist system which birthed it". The DSA has long been a supporter and defender of the labor movement in the United States and has also argued for the increase of international worker solidarity.

As socialists we believe there is no strong socialist movement without a militant and powerful labor movement.

The DSA opposes " right to work laws ", which are seen as an attack on the rights of workers and the historic advances or the labor movement. The DSA argues that financial elites have consciously fought to destroy union power in an effort to solidify the hegemony of markets and corporate power. The DSA recognizes that those who are most discriminated against based on identity are disproportionately women and people of color. The DSA supports protection of same-sex marriages , but it "views marriage as only a first step in recognizing the diversity of human relationships".

The DSA aligns itself with the socialist-feminist movement. The organization holds that capitalism is built on white supremacy as well as male supremacy. The DSA maintains that reproductive rights are central to the feminist movement. Connecting democratic socialism and socialist feminism, the DSA says "that birth control and safe abortion should be provided as part of a comprehensive single-payer healthcare program". Believing that electoral politics can only take socialist feminism so far, the organization also says that the emphasis must be on community based grass roots movements.
