Dream Blue Sky (The Exceptions Book 1)
What she learns changes her whole life. Did you know this is a series? Grr, I will have to wait to see what happens next. The characters are interesting and each are distinctly different. There is one character that you only meet in a dream but you know that the created dream person is vital to the story. The setting is dreary, which is what the author wants you to see. There are things that happen that you know you will need to read the next book to find out what its meaning is!

Oh, and at the end? There is a little teaser from the next book! The author is cruel to tease us so with it!!!!! Jul 25, Sky rated it really liked it. Please note that I received a free ebook via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. The Dream Protocol is such a hard book to review. There were a few errors as well in the text itself but there is so much potential in this book.
I thought the story was intriguing and the characters relatable. It was really interesting to see multiple relationship dynamics, we have the main character and her parents, the main character and her friendships, and then her relationship with the authoritative figures in her society. I think it brought a little more growth to the main character.
The ending seals the deal on how I feel about the book, and this one did not disappoint. So despite all the issues I had with the book, I would definitely pick up the next book. I love books that are different and original. Descent is one of those. I really can't compare it to other books and I like that. This book is about Deirdre and Flynn. Their hatred for The Ministry and the world they believed that was being hidden from them.
It's not a romance book but it's about the love of family and friends and what you would do to protect them from being descended. I found myself extremely frustrated with Dee at times. A lot of times. I know teenagers are I love books that are different and original. I know teenagers are rebellious heck I was one but she didn't think before reacting. It's like she could care less of the consequences regardless if that meant getting herself or her friends and family in trouble.
We didn't read much of Flynn's story other than that something was wrong with him and he was best friends with Dee. I liked his character and I wished we could've had more background info on him. Maybe in the next book we will. Adara Flynn Quick really done an excellent job of making us feel like we were living in Dee's world and Flynn's.
The details were just amazing. The writing was excellent and I was very impressed. The cover is absolutely gorgeous and that was what made me want to read this book in the first place! If you love post apocalyptic books that are different than those you've read and doesn't contain zombies then The Dream Protocol: Descent is for you!
Jun 30, Robyn rated it really liked it. Incredible and engaging tale that will whisk the reader away to suspend all disbelief as Coleridge suggests. Lovely and intriguing, this story is only disappointing because the sequels are not yet written. I won't enjoy the wait, but I will endure it. I appreciate that this is a new wrinkle in dystopian literature armed with a strong female character. I will definitely recommend this to my junior high and high school students, but adults will enjoy it also.
I'm so glad I received this from NetGa Incredible and engaging tale that will whisk the reader away to suspend all disbelief as Coleridge suggests. I'm so glad I received this from NetGalley! Jul 28, Jane rated it really liked it. This was a good story that grabbed my attention. It had a well-thought-out plot with good characters having a decently described backstory.
The ending came to a close, but did leave the opening for the next book. There were some grammatical errors, but not enough to detract attention from the flow of the storyline.
I will be getting the next book in the series. I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Jul 17, Shellie rated it really liked it Shelves: Fantastic concept for a dystopian and I was really sucked in. However, I would have liked it to be denser, with more dreams and a little polish. I felt like all of the pieces were there with a beautiful picture we could put together, but it was a piece puzzle rather than a 1,piece one worthy of superglue and hanging on our walls.

Jun 28, Dani - Perspective of a Writer rated it liked it Shelves: I was going to round up to 4 stars but everything was told to us, there was almost no showing us! And such an intriguing world too! Deirdre and Flynn are two friends hiding a secret while trying to navigate their life in Skellig City, where dreams are produced by dream makers for the profit of the ministry who controls the city. But in the course of saving him she uncovers a bigger secret, one the ministry will kill to hide. I like me some dystopian world.
Skellig City made sense to me in a way while also being totally nonsensical at the same time. I can see an evil corporation coming in and setting up a situation to produce the dreams that sell so well to the public.

But why the whole mythology about the ruined and killing people at age 35? This just seemed like a rip off of Logan's Run a scifi classic. Now this aspect could very well play out over the course of the rest of the books in the series but for this book it was a distracting premise that didn't jive with the dream creation idea. I just don't get killing a person who you've have trained to make such cool, realistic dreams!! It doesn't matter how old they get if they have the right talent and training together I did like the whole idea of the selection coming up where you have to pick what job you'll do in the city.
This is a very utilized idea but it doesn't really get old. As well as the multi-levels of the city and the need to dream in order to sleep. Also the need of credits in order to dream so you can rest. None of the dream elements really were utilized in the course of the plot. This was terribly disappointing to me. I like the dream Deirdre's mom made and would like to understand it's importance but its not even touched on in this book.
I came to care less about Roenin and pretty much put him out of my mind as the rescue plot hijacked the story. The dream drones were cool and using nightmares to subdue the people were nice touches. Even government rulers must have minions. The rescue of Flynn was rather convenient and all but we had some fun scenes to make it happen.
I liked the little twist of Deirdre learning what the descent was really about in the course of the rescue mission. The writing was a bit of a struggle to get through. The whole history of the dream corp was confusing, dry and the best bit of showing in the whole book! If only the main story was written with the same technique! The problem with so much telling is it leaves the world feeling contrived even when the semantics of the world are compelling. It seems to have been a deliberate choice too as the writing of the actual scenes is well done even if the plotting and pacing also felt disjointed.
The story went so fast!! I think the actual string of events that make up the story was very thin yet each step individual scene felt well thought out. Really the writing makes the book a real dichotomy I really liked Flynn. Flynn came across really well on the page. Deirdre was the new classic modern heroine who rebels, rebels, rebels under a repressive society, yada, yada, yada. I didn't hate her but I've read her a thousand times and she wasn't compelling in the least. I'd have liked to see several POV characters in different aspects of the dream sectors that we can follow and explore the world.
The outcome of the plot is predisposed, of course, and the twists are obvious as they follow previous scifi patterns used in other books. What the story has going for it is the cool dream society that was created. Give us a drone's POV, a newbie dream maker, a maintenance worker who explores and finds the odd machine in the basement, a reluctant Matcher.
Now that would make a really cool story Jun 13, Lottie rated it really liked it Recommends it for: Dystopia fans; the hunger games, divergent, the maze runner. Although I read the eBook version of this, the Goodreads cover is fairly interesting and unique.
Complexity within novels can make them interesting, but too much complexity can endanger the story itself. It set the scene for a subtle romance without turning into an insta-love situation, which I respected. A quick, fascinating read. This book starts off slow with a lot of info dump that can seem daunting and even serve as a distraction from what is actually going on.
However, once the large info dumps subside and the actual story takes place and characters are introduced, it's a really interesting story. Adara Quick submerges us into this futuristic world that would like to paint itself as a Utopia but is very much a Dystopia. The idea behind Skellig Michael [a large island off of Ireland,] being u A quick, fascinating read. I am a world loving person and this book [though short and sweet,] did well to deliver in both the world as well as the laws that are within it so that we as the reader may have a better grasp on it all.
To make this world believable. Really, is it so hard to believe that the human race becomes hung up on a new technological advancement and becomes dependent on one to sleep and dream? I don't think so! Where justice is served by delivering nightmares as a form of punishment. You ought to be. There are more than a few issues with the book, but this author can write and the ideas that are there are brilliant.
If the whole book had been like that I would probably have rated it a 4, but it wasn't and so I'll rate it a 3 with a huge author to watch for sign for future works. Website - Facebook - Instagram Jul 31, Jessica Hansen rated it it was amazing. Everything single thing about this book sucked me in, and I let it! I was memorized by how each scene came together, how every character played a key role and no detail seemed left out. There are so many different quirks and little side notes that are happening throughout the book it seems like they almost don't make sense Deirdre is badass, and I personally love her!
I love her accent, her perception of everything in her life and she fights for those who are special to her. The secret that she hides in this book is large, it's life altering, and the fact that she's willing to expose it for Flynn says great things about the depth of their relationship. As whole these two make quiet the poetic pair One thing I have to touch on is the Ministry. Have you ever had that one character, or entity, in a novel that you just wanted to punch in the throat??
Yeah, that's how I feel about the Ministry and all it's players. As annoying as they were, I have to tip my hat to the author for creating such a provoking group of characters! Overall this entire novel had my heart, from the beginning to the end. With it's landscapes, location and storyline, the whimsy that Ms.
Quick was able to create within the pages of this book was amazing, and it only gives the reader a fantastic jumping off point for the rest of the series. Aug 29, The Pursuit Of Bookiness rated it it was amazing. I'm not normally a fan of reviewing books that are part of a series as I always feel obliged to review the whole series so that you, my dear reader, don't miss out, but I made an exception for this book because I LOVED the cover art.

But, my book shallowness came through for me this time and I couldn't have been happier with The Dream Protocol. I found the story engaging and fast paced and a tale that kept you guessing I loved the theme, it reminds me a little of a Hunger Games style of life with a little bit of social inequality thrown in for good measure.
And after the teaser at the end of Book 1 I cannot wait to read book 2!! The idea of the Ministry is a unique one and the depiction of people buying and living out their fantasies in their dreams could be a glimpse into our own future and the author depicts this life with creativity and flare that captivates the reader.
This book is definitely worth a read and kept me up until the wee hours! I received an advanced copy of this book in return for an honest review. All opinions are my own http: Jul 16, KittyKat rated it really liked it Shelves: I really liked the main characters Deidre and Flynn, especially their loyalty to each other. I really hope that they will confess their feelings for each other in the next book.
The plot was also intriguing and the book was fast paced and enjoyable to read because of this. The world was well-crafted with not only the city described clearly but the society and it's structure. The idea of a society in which the people are controlled via dreams or simulations was also really interesting. I really enjoyed the second half of the book when more was revealed about the descent and where the 'ruined' ended up; I just can't believe the cliff-hanger at the end!
I'm especially interested to see how the author explores the prophecy about the Callaghan girls. I can't wait for the next installment of this interesting new series.

Jul 11, Jennifer rated it really liked it. The concept of paying for dreams was also well done. The novel itself was well written and the characters of Deidre and Flynn were quite likeable. This is book one in a series and I am quite happy that Adara Quick is continuing the story. The ending of the book left me wanting more.
The book was a quick read and could probably be classified as a novella but the quality was there. I am glad she did not puff up the pages , just to increase the numbers. I had heard about this book and was excited when I received an ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review Sep 26, Miranda rated it really liked it Shelves: I received a copy via netgalley. This was super unique and the writing was flowy. Not sure how else to put it, just felt like it swished by and I enjoyed every last second of what I had been reading.
The world building was awesome and characters were developed and likable, not only that but some even relatable so it wasn't to cliched or over dramatic and for that I was super greatful for. I hope to see more from the author and will definitely be adding this to a reread pile. Also much cover love f I received a copy via netgalley. Also much cover love for this one. Summed up in one word: Adara Quick has had many jobs, including being a psychotherapist and a college professor. AQ uses her background in psychotherapy to create impressive and mind bending stories. The Dream Protocol is her first novel and the first instalment of a trilogy. Geissel and saw an excerpt from this in the back pages of the e-book. Out of the blue, Adara got in contact with me and offered to send me a copy in exchange for a review! It didn't take me long to finish this piece, it is a slim volume at just over pages, though it is packed full of imaginative content and radiates potential for an awesome trilogy.
Welcome to Skellig City, a subterranean zone created to ensure the safety of the human population. Due to the severe lack of space provided by an underground city, The Ministry that runs Skellig City have implemented a rule that anyone over the age of 35 is to be classified as 'ruined'.
The 'ruined' participate in the 'Ritual of Descent' which takes them to the afterlife known as 'Tir na Nog'. So many apostrophes, I'm sorry! From the age of 16, citizens are put through a 'selection test' which designates their job for the entirety of their working lives until they reach The Ministry monitor the citizens, making sure they do not step out of line, policing them with Drones and surveillance technology.
The one escape that citizens can experience are dreams, if you can afford it. The Dream Makers craft new and exciting dreams every day and for the right price, citizens can populate these dreams outside of their working hours. Deirdre Callaghan is the daughter of two Dream Makers.
Deirdre only truly cares for 3 things, Flynn, Antrim and getting out of Skellig City and seeing the real life blue sky. A few problems stand in her way. No one is allowed to leave the city. Her mother is due for descent any day now. The Dream Protocol is a love story combined with a escape attempt, wrapped in fantasy and set in a futuristic dystopian world. Though not the most original idea, the execution of this book is top quality and I am excited to read on when Book 2 arrives.
Written in the 3rd person, we follow both Deirdre and Flynn as they fight to stay alive and escape the confines Skellig City and the clutches of the sinister Ministry. The story kicks into gear when Deirdre's close family friend goes through the 'Ritual of Descent'. Before Maeve descends she passes on a message to Deidre and sets her on the path to her escape from the city. Before she can contemplate the warning that she is given, Flynn is publicly revealed to have an ageing disorder that puts him above the age of descent.
Ageing is seen as a disease in Skellig City. And no one wanted to catch it. No one even wanted to be near it. Deirdre, along with her best friend Antrim, have organise a breakout scenario and save their friend. The Ministry strive to keep everyone under their thumb and they punish anyone who steps out of bounds. From her parents getting on her case, to her new, strange dream program, Red Oak. Deirdre must take on everything that comes her way to save Flynn from certain death.
Though it sounds quite harsh, the writing style is relatively tame, with no swearing or violence, This is fantasy story suitable for a wider aged audience. The Dream Protocol slots nicely into the fantasy genre, not pushing the boundaries too much, but it is original enough to turn some heads. Character interaction is key in this book, Adara Quick manages to flow in and out of each characters perspective with ease.
This is a battle against authority and as Deirdre's confidence increases so does the intensity if the foe she has to conquer. TDP being set in the distant future when humanity is finding it harder to survive without struggling for food or a safe place to live gives AQ a lot of room for her imagination to take us to new and interesting places and I believe she did a great job. Skellig City is an underground civilization that has been closed off from the surface and the citizens have to use dream technology to live outside its boundaries.
The Ministry rule the city with an iron fist, using surveillance to monitor each member of the community. Having the 3 significant age groups works well to create an intense atmosphere. With the children not understanding why they have to leave at the age of The adults have to both inform the children of the reasons behind the descent whilst also coming to terms with their own premature deaths. And finally the 'ruined' who are seen as filth that need discarding before they corrupt the younger generations.
Deirdre is your run of mill rascal, a coming of age teen who does not want to conform to society and wants to break free from the chains of a corrupt and evil government. All she really wants is her freedom, her friends and her family. I want to find it. See it with my own eyes and not through some data packets transmitted through the Ministry. Flynn is an interesting choice of character, tailored to cause maximum chaos in this highly strung society. His aging disorder has left him look decades older than he truly is, but he still retains the youthful vigour of his 15 year old self.
Can he survive long enough to escape? There is a wonderful dreamy edge to this fiction that I really enjoy, AQ has shown such promise when it comes to imagery and I am seriously looking forward to when she evolves this world in the future. The other theme that, to myself, shows through is that there is always someone above the person in charge, so keep that in mind when you challenge someone. I enjoyed AQ's work. I definitely love the potential for an impressive trilogy.
I was not a fan of the length, I could have done with a lot more, but it is AQ's job to keep us waiting for more. I felt that events got so intense in this book and it had me hooked, then it is like AQ remembered that it is a trilogy and reeled it back in almost to square one and I was left with so many questions. Never mind, I only have to wait until winter: An enjoyable, exciting and dreamy journey through an unique and original setting. Though if you want a more depth and content I would wait until all three instalments are released first.
This is a good book. Set 1, years in the future, people live underground as there is no safe place above ground. Deirdre is always questioning things and her friend Flynn is aging quickly. Anyone who is defective get an early descent. This book has some wacky ideas for the future and how to keep a pure society. I look forward to the next book in the series. The Analysis Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader: I need to start by making a confession: I tried a lot, but I never encountered that one book that made me stop the eye rolls at the genre.
Well, until The Dream Protocol, that is. This book surprised me in every aspect and made me ache to keep reading it, to know what came next. It was a fast and fluid read, just what I needed to fall in love with the genre. It has some small problems that bothered me nevertheless, so four stars: The narrative was third person with that kind of narrator that floats from character to character, the traditional guide of the story.
Despite third person being my favorite type, this time, I admit that I got really confused in several parts during the beginning. Eventually, this problem was one of the things that made this book lose a star. She never dumps tons of information at her reader and then move on. There is always a new details here and there, something that you sense more than learn.
Honestly, this woman is a genius. The plot also was awesome. Write a product review. Most helpful customer reviews on Amazon. This is everything you want in a true YA novel. Both original and familiar, this story revolves around a diverse cast of young kids trying to figure out how to grow up with some unique powers. In a time when YA novels are often written more for adults, this one really is written for grade schoolers--Athough as an adult I admit I still enjoyed it.
Dream Blue Sky is genuine, hopeful, and the right amount of exciting to keep a kid turning the pages. I wouldn't have any hesitation giving this to any kid to read. This book is awesome, it's an easy read that holds your attention and draws you into the story and without realizing it your attached to the characters.
