A concise guide to managing stress and other emotional problems in the modern world. I particularly liked the sections on Technostress, it's effects and simple ways to avoid it. The author gives no-nonsense advice based on common sense derived from many years as a professional practitioner. Clinical psychologist Dr Kidman recognises that current world issues impact on our emotional health. In his new book he describes, various strategies for people to gain control in an increasingly stressful environment. In the workplace many people just sit in front of screens for hours and as you know, also have all sorts of other communication devices… laptops, ipads, smart phones, etc. That can be quite stressful. They are not dealing with other people, they are dealing with images on screens. There are tremendous benefits and efficiencies as people can deal with things quickly, but they also get caught up thinking they have to reply immediately to an email.
So I tried to go over that. Then with the globalization of disasters, the news is mainly about disasters, the terrible things in the Middle East, to Libya, or the floods. Population growth is huge as are a whole lot of other issues but on a day to day level, as people get more depressed and anxious, they are not going to be very good at solving problems. The balance of the book is more evidence based strategies to help manage and reduce the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

I think it can lead to excessive communication with people walking around Twittering. Even though we are all talking to one another it is all via screens, typing out stuff, texting and so on. There are many advantages, but I think people have to step back a bit to see how much time they spend on these things.
It is good to go out and actually speak to live people laughs! All they do is deal with people in chat rooms and play games. There are isolation issues as well as in families children hibernating in their rooms. We come back to the fact that humans have been around for centuries and these technological revolutions have impinged on people who were born in the last 20 or 30 years.
People have always had the same brains as we have and yet we are subjected to all this stuff. Shut down everything, get out there, talk to people and walk around laughs. A lot of people are not exercising enough. Instead they are watching computer screens or television at night and of course, using their phones.
