Demigod Conception (Demigod Chronicles Book 1)
My son wanted to read it in 3rd grade, but I read it first.
Demigod | Revolvy
I feel that there's too much content that isn't age appropriate until at least 5th grade. Gods having "affairs" with mortals. There are a lot of moral issues imbedded into this book that I think needs to be discussed after the child has read this book, so parents should be prepared to discuss. I think my son will LOVE the book, but he won't have the chance to love it until he gets to 5th grade. Helped me decide Had useful details Read my mind Parent of a 12 year old Written by Tsion April 9, A fun mix of modern and myth I recently saw I list of 13 books every kid should read before turning The book tells the story of Perseus Percy Jackson, a kid who lives with his single mother and is unsure of his dad's identity.
After a creepy math teacher transforms into a monster and tries to eat him, Percy's friend Grover who's really a satyr takes him to Camp Half-Blood, where Percy learns that the Greek Gods really do exist, and they still have children with mortals. That is what the camp is for.

Percy is one of those children. His father is Posiedon, God of the Seas, and Percy has some control over water. But soon he must go on a quest with Grover and Annabeth, daughter of Athena, to take back Zeus's stolen lightning bolt and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods. The book is funny and witty, effortlessly matching old mythology and tradition with modern culture in a way that makes the book engrossing and unpredictable.
There is no sex, only talk of gods having affairs with mortals, and quite a bit of married gods having affairs with other gods. Violence is the biggest issue, whether it's slapstick or intense. Sword-fights, explosions, creepy monsters, ect. None of it's graphic and most is presented in a comical fashion. Your kids will love this book and you will too. Don't be worried that CommonSense doesn't have reviews for books 2 and 3.
They're no worse than this one. Parent of a 2, 4, 6, and 8 year old Written by jennwhitmer October 14, I enjoyed the story, and it's action packed. The biggest problem is with the way the demigods were conceived. There is a lot of talk about the gods sleeping with humans to make the demigods. Until your child is ready to understand babies out of marriage, this book isn't for him.
Adult Written by Janagrsa April 9, My son age 11 6th grade began reading this book a few days ago and is almost done I am reading along side of him He is wanting to do reaseach on Greek Mythology and absolutely loves the book. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone especially if they are doing a unit on Mythology. This books makes it fun.

Some times we read it together, but more often than not we sneak off and both read ahead. He is quite the advanced and voracious reader for 7! We've gotten so into them we moved onto Heroes of Olympus and are now reading the Kane Chronicles while anxiously awaiting the next HoO book. In an effort to test my son's reading comprehension and the overall educational value I looked up a few Greek Mythology quizzes. I actually had to use the middle school ones, as they don't learn this material in elementary. He knew all of the Greek Gods names, roles, lore, interrelationships and thanks to Heroes of Olympus, their Roman equivalents.
He also did pretty well on the Greek heroes Hercules, Perseus, etc. Before reading this series, I'm not sure I could tell you who was married to who, whose children were whose, etc but now both my seven year old both understand the complex interrelationships of all of the Olympian Gods and Goddesses. The book is an adventure series and they do spend a lot of time fighting monsters.
Demi-gods do get injured but fortunately they always carry a magical food that cures their injuries. It does subtlety address more mature content, as other reviewers mentioned, but in a way that a seven year old doesn't even raise an eyebrow. For example, one camper will tell another camper "Zeus is my dad. He had an elicit affair with my mom in the 90s, left us and went back to his goddess wife, Hera, who now hates us. There is next to no consumerism. They occasionally reference Diet Coke, but there really isn't any branding or merchandizing. Fortunately, we've been recreating scenes and weapons with legos, cardboard and lots of gold duck tape!
If you are continuing with the series, it is important to note it is much like Harry Potter.

Recent statistics from a Wells Fargo survey indicated that talking about finance is more daunting than talking about death, religion, politics, or taxes. As the final battle with the Titans approaches after The Battle of the Labyrinth , Percy spends time with his mortal friend Rachel Dare. Their relationship causes conflict between Percy and Annabeth Chase.
Towards the end of The Last Olympian Rachel realizes that her attraction is not to Percy, but to his mythological world, because of her destiny as the next Oracle of Delphi. Three other characters in the novels are romantically interested in Percy, though he remains mostly oblivious. Nico di Angelo 's hero worship of Percy turns into an ever-worsening crush on him; at the same time, Nico resents Percy because he believes the son of Poseidon allowed his sister Bianca to die in battle. Calypso later meets Percy's friend Leo Valdez ; he manages to save her, where Percy could not.
Percy has several animal companions. Blackjack is first referred to as a " mare " in The Sea of Monsters , though he is called a stallion in all later books. Blackjack becomes Percy's personal steed and companion. Blackjack is unfailingly loyal to Percy, and on several occasions manages to save Percy's life. Blackjack always calls Percy "boss" and is quite fond of sugar cubes and doughnuts. Blackjack has two friends named Porkpie and Guido , both white pegasi, who sometimes accompany him. All three are intelligent beings capable of interacting with other demigods independent of their horse-to-human translator, Percy.
Percy's second magical companion is Mrs. O'Leary , who is introduced in the fourth novel, Battle of the Labyrinth. She is a hellhound that he receives from Daedalus whom Percy meets as a sword master named Quintus before the inventor dies. O'Leary is described as "the size of a tank ", the magical veil known as the Mist causes her to appear as a poodle to mortals.
Percy often refers to her as "his dog". Percy sometimes uses Mrs. O'Leary's ability to "shadow travel" to cross large distances almost instantaneously. His brother Tyson and dead friend Charles Beckendorf are Mrs. O'Leary's other caretakers, though she is also fond of Nico di Angelo , son of Hades. He also knows a hippocampus named Rainbow who likes Percy's half-brother Tyson.
Percy Jackson
It later saves the life of Tyson and returns to help the two brothers on several occasions. Percy has also traveled with a small calico kitten called Small Bob by Bob the Titan. Small Bob was accidentally created by one of Atlas 's servants who was attempting to summon a group of spartoi. He is fond of Bob and protective of the traveling group, leading Bob to call him "a good monster". Small Bob can transfer into a full sized saber-toothed tiger at will and occasionally appears as an x-ray for a few seconds at a time. His purr is disproportionately loud for an animal of his size. It is unclear if he lives or dies, but he is not mentioned again.
Percy is described as handsome, with messy jet black hair, a "Mediterranean" complexion, and sea-green eyes like his father Poseidon. His mother notes that Percy looked just like his father, and his friend Hazel says that he has the looks of a Roman god. Like most demigods, Percy has ADHD and dyslexia , the former because of his godly battle instincts, and the latter because his brain takes more naturally to Ancient Greek than to English.
After being trained at Camp Half-Blood, he has developed a Greek fighting style described as unpredictable by New Romans and is an expert swordsman. After bathing in the River Styx , Percy was given the curse of Achilles , making him invulnerable except for the small of his back. He loses this power when it is washed away in the Little Tiber surrounding New Rome, as part of his acceptance there. As a son of Poseidon , one of the " Big Three " the others being Zeus and Hades , Percy is more powerful than most of the gods' other children.
