A tight, square copy with a bright, clean binding with no wear to the cloth, save for a touch of rubbing to upper front corner tip.
Enclosed in a custom cloth clamshell box. Original red cloth, titles to front board and spine black, top edge green. Housed in a grey cloth slipcase, illustrated with reproductions of the dust jacket panels. Spine a touch faded; an excellent, bright copy. A fascinating presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his future wife on the front free endpaper, two months prior to their wedding, "To Mrs Dearholt, with kindest regards, Mr Burroughs. February 3, ", and with Florence's ownership signature to the front pastedown, below her bookplate, "Florence Gilbert Dearholt Burroughs".
Florence Gilbert Dearholt was an American silent film actress of the s, who married entrepreneur Ashton Dearholt in Ashton Dearholt, a friend of Burroughs, was one of the producers and actors of the film The New Adventures of Tarzan; he and Florence divorced in after he returned from filming in Guatemala with co-star Ula Holt, and insisted that Holt be able to live in the Dearholt home.
Florence married Burroughs in April the following year. This is a reprint of the first book in Burroughs's series about the titular character Tarzan. It was first published in the pulp magazine All-Story Magazine in October , and first appeared in book form in , published in Chicago by A. First edition, first state, with printer's name set in two lines of Old English type.

This is the rarest state for many years unrecorded where in this copy the title page is a cancel the title page is mounted on a stub where a leaf has been removed and replaced with the correct Chicago - A. Since the title page is a cancel replacement by the publisher it might logically follow that his variant replacing another that it is implied that an early incorrect or somehow defective title page created by the printer.

A good copy with the hinges cracked, flaking of letterting to the spine, wear at the cloth extremities mainly at the bottom of spine. Burroughs was the first writer of fiction to shrewdly exploit his creation in a manner which is now considered business as usual. Gilt spine lettering dulled, name on endpaper, and scattered mild staining; otherwise, with the professional repair a very good or better copy lacking the dust jacket. Used - Very Good. Better World Books Condition: Covers are rubbed at the spine ends and corners, with some water spotting. Spine is dulled, with a vertical crease. Interior hinges are untouched, but the book appears shaken, with some signatures slightly proud. Owner's inscription on the fep, and below the text on the last page. Well read, but certainly a desirable reading copy. First Burt edition, with McClurg on the copyright page. McClurg gave permission to Burt to reprint Burrough's first five books in a cheaper edition the year after publication.
This copy is especially crisp and clean, and has a dust wrapper with a wrap-around design by Fred J. Arting, featuring a silhouette of Tarzan, which also appears in the frontispiece. Argosy Book Store Published: Burt Early printing circa is Zueschner's with frontis and credited wraparound dust jacket by Fred Arting and a dark green cloth cover with black decoration and titling double bordered in blind. The original title page as frontis and dedication pages are present.
The wrap around dj is bright, unfaded and complete with a hint of wear at tips and corners. It is the green variant.

Issued from the plates of the McClurg first edition with its copyright page but with a new title page and frontis based on the original McClurg title page. Near fine with only the barest wear to green cloth boards. The cover is lettered in black and there are no lines on the cover; in dust jacket with some minor edge wear and a few chips at spine ends.
Robert Zeuschner calls for the Burt first printing to be lettered in white and to have embossed lines on cover--this copy doesn't but it does have ads for only Harold Bell Wright titles in the back, and the latest one advertised is a Wright title. Full bound with red cloth covered boards with black lettering. Has color loss from what appears to be a liquid spill near the upper hinge on the front board and on the outer edge of the rear board near the upper corner, light softening of the spine ends, and a discolored line that runs horizontally across the side page ends approximately 40 mm down from the top.
A gift inscription which can be easily erased is written in pencil on the front pastedown. DJ in mylar protective cover has small faint red bleed through corresponding to the spots of color loss on the red cloth boards and on the upper edge of the rear flyleaf. The spot on the front panel is very small and faint, that on the rear panel is a bit larger and more visible.
Also has moderate edge and corner wear with moderate chipping at the spine ends. Fine F is our highest grade. Arting that appeared on the first edition published by McClurg. To the best of my knowledge, Stahr's full color illustration is original with this Grossett and Dunlap reprint. Artig's front panel silhouette is included as a frontispiece. The jacket reproduces the wraparound art that graced the original edition, albeit in light colors.
