I've studied revivals for years but had never even heard of Sam Jones until a visiting minister from the South bragged him up at our church. After reading the book, I now know why I've never heard or read of him in all the years of studying revival. He was brash, crude, and even a racist.

This book is a must read for anyone who has ever only heard the "good side" about Sam Jones. Quotes and statements are all VERY well documented.

Jones was born in in Alabama to a slave owning family of middling wealth that moved to Cartersville, Georgia, in Holiness and Pentecostalism in the American South , notes that although widely known in his time, Jones is largely forgotten today. Though he preached hell and the devil, he did so with humor and sarcasm rather than fire and brimstone. In terms of content, the sermons reveal little interest in biblical exegesis or the exploration of doctrine. Most stress the impact of conversion on the way one should live.

Jones was typical of southern minsters of his station on race. Politically he was a friend of Populists like Tom Watson but generally remained committed to laissez faire, pick-yourself-up-by-the-bootstrap capitalism that linked financial struggle to sinful living. On other matters he was more unique.

According to Minnix, even though he was a staunch nativist, even a xenophobe, he was surprisingly irenical towards Roman Catholics and Jews.
