Movies in Running - Star Wars

Infinity War could yet live up to its name and top them all in runtime when it releases in May. There are other superhero movies that run longer than The Last Jedi , most of them in the troubled DC universe Zack Snyder's Watchmen clocked in at minutes, while Christopher Nolan's trilogy-capping The Dark Knight Rises still holds the all-time is-it-over-yet record at minutes.

So is this a good or a bad sign for the latest entry in the Star Wars canon? Will The Last Jedi actually feel that long, or will we be looking at our watches with surprise when we file out of the theaters? Well, Lucasfilm and Disney tend to provide a firmer hand on the tiller than Warner Bros. We have no doubt that if Lucasfilm boss Kathy Kennedy felt minutes was too much for the material at hand, she would have ordered cuts — just as Rogue One was drastically re-edited last year.

But there's no indication that Kennedy is anything less than ecstatic about what Rian Johnson has done; indeed, having viewed his efforts, she promptly ordered up a whole new and still mysterious Star Wars trilogy from the director. It's also entirely possible that Carrie Fisher's untimely death after wrapping her scenes last December affected the runtime.

Given that this is absolutely, definitively Princess Leia Organa's last appearance in a live-action movie , Carrie's space brethren may have wanted to stretch out her scenes as long as possible. Han Solo's lucky dice still don't mean a damn thing after 'Solo'. That's not unheard of, especially during the spring and summer season when lots of other blockbusters vie for attention. It is worth noting that Solo faced little in the way of new release competition this week.

And that number only stands to fall faster as June delivers tentpoles like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and The Incredibles 2.

The important thing to remember is that weekend box office figures rarely go up. The question is, what does all of this mean for Star Wars? In the long term, nothing.

  3. 'Solo' angling toward historic lows for Star Wars after two weeks.
  4. Disney knows how valuable the Star Wars brand is and, more importantly, the company is heavily invested in the franchise's future. Some have suggested that Solo 's box office troubles can be pinned to the backlash that followed The Last Jedi 's release in Others feel it's a case of franchise fatigue; too many Star Wars movies in too short a period of time.

In my mind, there's no merit at all to the backlash argument.

    4. The segment of the community that felt personally stung by The Last Jedi — which, to be clear, isn't the same thing as not liking the movie — was loud, but is ultimately rather small. The outcry was largely the work of trolls more focused on sowing dissent than engaging in the critical conversation.

The franchise fatigue argument, on the other hand, feels reductive.

There's some merit to the idea that fans are current inundated with Star Wars things to a degree they haven't known before. But in my own, admittedly anecdotal experience, I'm still plenty fired up for more Star Wars and so are all my geek friends.
