Shipman beats Joey and the mob begins to lynch him on the school playground swing set. Suddenly Griffin appears with Ella, who confesses that she lied at Cramer's instigation in order to save her father's life.

In front of the mob, Ella apologizes to Joey, telling him that Cramer said he would not be harmed and would only be expelled from the white school. Realizing that they have been manipulated by Cramer, the townspeople slowly walk away, ignoring Cramer's exhortations, until only he and Griffin are left on the empty playground. Griffin tells Cramer that his "work" in Caxton is finished and that he should catch the next bus out of town. The novel was published in and film rights were optioned by Seven Arts.

We put our hearts, our souls - and what few people do - our money into this picture. Everybody asked us 'Why would you make this picture? Obviously we did it because we wanted to, and we think it's a damn good job. It was shot in black and white over three and a half weeks on location in southeast Missouri.

Some of the production took place in East Prairie , Charleston and Sikeston. Corman presented a watered-down version of the script to the townspeople, but they still did not like it.

Before it was finished, local people objected to the film's portrayal of racism and segregation. The film's cast features a number of writers. Nolan were all working screenwriters and novelists; all three of them make their only acting appearance in a feature film in The Intruder. Leo Gordon was also an established screenwriter, writing several novels and films, and over 50 teleplays for various shows, while maintaining a concurrent acting career. Star William Shatner would, years later, also pen numerous novels and memoirs.

Valentine's Day Massacre Target: Julie Corman wife Corman's World: He is very good as the young, handsome, well-groomed, white-suited proselytizer who uses his subjects' experiential misconceptions, inertia and fears to his advantage. And he has all the tools to do so: The show, though, is almost stolen by a kick-butt performance by vet Leo Gordon who has a memorable one-on-one verbal joust with Cramer in a hotel room. He exposes Cramer for the demagogue and narcissistic social leech that he is.

There is a very sensitive and poignant scene bedside in a hospital room involving a pro-integration newspaper man who was brutalized and his pro-segregation wife. Very nice touch, here, as Corman makes it clear that among the segregationists were some good and decent people who were simply misguided by upbringing, false beliefs and false prophets and that they needed just a little time to accept change. Yes, this gritty, grim film intrudes into one's consciousness and poses questions to one's soul that are as vital to be asked as they were when this film was made.

If anything, it is even more timely today! The opening credit music reminiscent of parts of the score to "Ace in the Hole", another classic with a heel for its "hero" and the rest of the score by the often uncredited Herman Stein is exceptional.

Leo Gordon is exceptional. Corman's direction - the best of his wonderful career, ergo exceptional. In short, the film is a must-see. Despite the shortness of the extra, the movie is both a time capsule AND a movie whose echoes can be heard loudly unto this present day.

It's actually better than most movies currently being made! Divorcing this film from the time it was made it's still an amazing achievement.

When you do consider that this film was made while the civil rights struggle was still going on makes one more appreciative of the guts and courage it took Roger Corman to bring this film to the screen. Only Corman could have made this film because no major studio wanted to touch it. Corman had to do it on a shoestring budget and even then he lost money on this enterprise. In all likelihood the film contained too many uncomfortable truths about us to attract wide distribution. Consider that it was only a short time before this film was made that we had fought a war against facism only to have an institutionalized form of it in our own backyard.

OK, enough of the soapbox. This film works because it feels so real not unlike a documentary. Corman's employment of non-actors probably contributes to it's authenticity. It does take some doing to distance William Shatner from Captain Kirk but do consider that this film was made 5 years prior to "Star Trek" and Shatner was a newcomer at the time this film was made.
