Often with an underlying hint of humour an all round great performance, the storey is also really good. Definitely worth the time. This book has been on my to do list for months and i am so glad that i got around to listening to it.
Definitely in the top ten of books i've listened to. This book is at least 6 possibly 5 if the next 2 books continue this trend. The story reminds me of the Stargate series for you SciFi channel fans out there. The start to this book completely pulls you in and i couldn't stop listening from that point on.
The narrator does a great job with the different characters which made me feel like i was watching a movie and not just listening to a book. My wife can attest that I was completely immerse and couldn't hear anything outside of the world that this book creates. Great book and now onto the second installment. It reminds me of a "superhero" film or story, where the first part of the story is the "gathering of the heroes" for the coming crisis. This portion of the story was a bit slow, and he almost lost me.
But when the assembled team ventures out into the galaxy to investigate stories they've been told of the "Broa Overlords", the story really takes off. There is a sense of mystery as the team seeks to answer some critical questions, and the tension builds. In a paperback, I often cheat and look ahead for spoilers, but with an audiobook, there's no good way to do that. But this book created suspense for me that really made me want to cheat.
The Krishnon Saga by Zach Dionne
The narrator is fantastic, and is able to suggest numerous characters with his voice. Overall a great read, and I'm plowing into part 2! This is sorta a review of all 3 books as you should read all of them but I will do individual reviews of them also. The narrator is pretty good he just mispronounces words or pronounces them not as they should be by people who say them - like Toronto the "t" at the end is silent people say it like "Torono" but the narrator says the "t", many other words are like that also but its not that bad This is a "First Contact" novel but not like any you have read before, without giving anything away that's not in the description I will say that Humans find out about a Race of Aliens that must control everything sorta like the USA is now and they don't know about the Humans so for now we are safe.
Humans find an Alien and go on an adventure to find out more about these evil Aliens that want to control everything. This book goes into many of the things that would probably would be happening if we actually encountered Aliens like in this book, I think that the events play out pertty much how it would in real life but we can only wait and see when the Aliens come The end of this book is nicely setup for what you expect in the next one and it flows nicely, this author is top notch and I am going on to reading the other 3 book series Antares Dawn next, the other one Life Probe the Makers books has a female narrator which I sometimes find problematic when they try to do male voices so I might not be able to listen to that one of The Sales of Tau Ceti but I will give it a chance.
This series of books is great but let me warn you the 3rd book ends nicely but you will want more and honestly i think there needs to be another book, I hope the author writes one or more. The Gibraltar Earth series has a great premise but falls far short of it's potential. It is a dry list of steps for creating the infrastructure needed to achieve the series's goal. Yet, it doesn't show the elaborate system in action, missing the potential for complex interactions, moral challenges, and some gripping story telling.
Even during its dry procedures, it misses opportunities for human interest stories and drags the reader through a few predictable "suspense" situations. The first book, Gibraltar Earth, is clever and a decent read. The imagry is decent and the sci-fi is interesting. Sadly, there's no need to read the second two books, Gibraltar Sun and Gibraltar Stars. These contain too many lengthy recaps of the story this far, mission profile checklists, and bombastic political presentations.
Skip the later two books and simply use your imagination to finish the story; I'm sure you know how it will end. They contain epic premise which is fully realized with plenty of intrigue and human interest along the way. I've listened to the 3 books in this series. I felt that the series could have been done in 2 books, maximum, but was dragged out to make it into three books.
There is a lot of repetition and exposition in book 3 that is simply not needed. Other than this complaint, the story line was interesting and fairly well developed although not in a great deal of detail. Overall, I enjoyed the series until I reached the 3rd book which as I mentioned drags. How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable? If this book were a movie would you go see it? Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? Kept my attention enough to continue on to the 2nd book in series.
I bought this book on a whim, not really expecting much. To my pleasant surprise I enjoyed it thoroughly and I'm looking forward to Michael McCollum's next book. I can see that I'm in the minority here; most people liked this book a lot. I found the characters flat and often annoying. Not one member of the crew was even a smidgen different from when we first met him or her. The Krishnon Saga is an exciting and amazing adventure.
