DAY OF THE DOGS (The Solar Flare Series Book 1)
In the second punch, fast moving charged particles arrive, which can also have this sort of impact on the upper atmosphere -- or worse, if they hit satellites in space. The third punch comes courtesy of the CME, when the sun releases an enormous cloud of billions of tons of solar atmospheric material into the solar system.
These fast moving clouds can reach Earth in about three days, which is what we experienced yesterday. When they interact with Earth's magnetic field, they can induce extra currents along high voltage power lines. That can trigger protective relays in the power grid and could, in the worst-case scenario, lead to widespread blackouts, as happened during a powerful solar storm in March In , a massive solar storm that narrowly missed Earth.
The storm was the strongest ever recorded, and had the planet been in its path, it could have had a catastrophic effect, blowing out electrical systems, GPS, radio systems and other technology worldwide, and sending billions of people into a blackout that could have taken years to repair. Two years later, one University of Colorado scientist remarked, "If it had hit, we would still be picking up the pieces. While he has thus far not received any reports of operational problems in technical systems, there were sightings of "quite spectacular" northern lights in Minnesota and the higher states, as well as in Canada and Northern Europe.
He added that information about outages or other effects tend to trickle in over the days following a storm and that NASA scientists will be able to build a full picture of the impact within a couple weeks. It was not associated with significant charged particles, so I don't expect major reports of impact on satellites.
The storm hit about seven or eight hours earlier than expected, which is within typical range of uncertainty, according to Pulkkinen. Not that there's a whole lot to be done to prepare for one anyway. Yes, you should probably delete Instagram, says author Catherine Price. Zuckerberg acknowledges there was "a breach of trust between Facebook and the people who share their data with us". Together, they're responsible for the personal data of 50 million people being pulled from Facebook. The satellite is nicknamed "Vespucci" after America's namesake explorer Amerigo Vespucci.

The attorney behind a multibillion-dollar tobacco settlement in has turned his attention to the opioid epidemic.
And it could have been a solar flare, but that's not discussed. Two attorney's, one a former medic with the military, the other a female who happens to own a ranch, are the main characters. They leave the city together, searching for the man's daughter, who was on a plane heading towards New Orleans, but the plane crashed in an alligator infested swamp. The situations seemed contrived, the characters weren't believable, and the dialogue stilted. What I found inexplicable was that after travelling so far, and coming so close to the crash site, when a survivor of the crash tells the hero his daughter is dead he just turns around and leaves! He never even checks the crash site and you just know his daughter is still alive. And it's a cliffhanger, too. I expect the author will improve with practice.

I have to give the book extra credit for having a loyal dog in the story, and the dog survives to the end of this book 1, which always makes me happy. I hate it when they gorily kill off the dog!

There are many things left hanging at the end of the book, so obviously this is going to be a series. Both the main character and his daughter who was on a plane that crashed are alive, but neither know anything about the other. Only we, the reader, are able to see both their stories. Looking forward to see what happens with this one. Sep 29, Sondra rated it really liked it Shelves: I appreciate how he sticks more to the human aspects of an EMP fallout rather than overloading a reader with the science of it. The pace is great. I didn't want to put the book down.
It is also well edited-- sometimes an indie book is littered with errors I didn't notice more than one. An EMP is a real threat and it's about time more stories are being written showing how quickly society will break down. As an animal lover, the dog as a character is a great extra bonus.
The second book is already out and I'm anxious to start it. Aug 09, Emily rated it it was ok. I can not honestly believe so many ppl have five star reviews This book is not a smooth and easy read, where you just easily slip into the story. I like to be swept into a story, consumed in the world the author creates. To much time is spent describing guns, it reads like a jerky instruction manual, even tho the idea for the book is great! I expected more from the reviews I saw None of the characters are very likable, and few descriptions are given.
Mar 14, Sara Mcbride rated it it was ok. This book was a piss poor representation of the genre. I thought it felt rushed and to be honest, I could care less about what happens to the characters. If it wasn't Kindle Unlimited, I would be pretty unhappy right now. Nov 26, Sarah Davies rated it really liked it. Gripped with the terrifying realization the plane has crash-landed somewhere in the expansi Author Chris Pike's debut novel is a gritty and compelling survival tale about human courage and steadfast determination to live, to endure, and to persevere against all odds.
This was a great story and I will definitely look for the next instalment, what a great idea how would people cope with no electricity at all, everything we do everyday would change, could you survive?? Will look forward to Dillion, Cassie and Coles future stories, well written and well rounded story that keeps you intrigued and I like the twist in the final chapter, even though you are still left with a cliffhanger. Sep 17, Lori rated it really liked it Shelves: Great start to a series.
I really enjoyed this story. It pulls you in from the start and doesn't let go until the end. It was an entertaining, well written, interesting, engaging and enjoyable story.

Solar flare nearly destroyed Earth 2 years ago: NASA
Cassie Stockdale survived when plane she was on crashed. Has no idea where exactly she is or which direction to go in an effort to get help and eventually home. With little to no supplies, what's your next move? The story does end in a cliffhanger. Fortunately the second book in the series is already available on Audible. Kevin Pierce does a fantastic job with the narration. The narration flows smoothly at a nice even pace.
He just has one of those voices that makes the characters and story come to life. I save his books for my road trips, listening to a story he narrates make me look forward to my weekly 9 hour trip. I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher. Sep 09, Brandon rated it it was amazing Shelves: People being eaten alive by alligators, riding dead silent planes into the swamp, and escaping courthouses under barrage from jetliner pieces plummeting from the sky.
This book, so far, has one of the most interesting "moment of disaster" stories I've yet come across. The journey afterward, and the characters themselves, were very well done, as well. I'm looking forward to listening to the next book in the series. It was a little shorter than most of its kind, but wasted very little time anythin People being eaten alive by alligators, riding dead silent planes into the swamp, and escaping courthouses under barrage from jetliner pieces plummeting from the sky.
It was a little shorter than most of its kind, but wasted very little time anything irrelevant to the story, and moved along at a fast clip. Although this book doesn't exactly end in a cliffhanger, the story is definitely unfinished. It's a fairly formulaic post-apocalyptic story with prepared protagonists facing stereotypical challenges.
It's sufficiently engaging for me to want to continue reviewing this series. It doesn't hurt that Kevin Pierce delivers his customary excellent performance. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Oct 02, Gar rated it liked it.
I rate the series up to the end of 4 I enjoyed the storylines and characters. I'm a sucker for anything in this genre so I'm sure my rating is somewhat biased. The narration is definitely not great but satisfactory. The storylines are not very deep, which would have made the series much more enjoyable. As a stand-alone book, 1 would leave you with a lot of questions but as a set, these books are worth the read. Feb 26, Donna rated it really liked it. An EMP story Not sure I like Dillon who seems very capable in the end of world type scenario depicted, but seems gruff and even disrespectful of Holly whom he met before the event.
He tells her more or less to shut up and do as he says. Still the story is interesting and held me. It is an easy quick action packed read. On to book two. This reversal causes larger and more frequent solar flares, which explains why this year has seen a large number of these impressive solar weather occurrences in many years. Early in October the Earth was treated to a wonderful display of Northern Lights, illuminating the sky with brilliant dancing colors throughout the Northern United States and Canada. Below are some informative links explaining what solar flares are, how they affect technology, and how they are studied. NASA explained effects such as moderate radio blackout are common with class M solar flares.
The Sun Also Flips: Devitt also discusses the effects of superflares and their potential global threat to the Earth. The not-so Northern Lights: The site explains the phenomena and includes many lovely photos from Paul Cyr illustrating an Amish family experiencing the Lights for the first time.
The Daily explains what a solar flare is, why it occurs, and that in December of this solar flare cycle will reach its peak, undoubtedly creating more Northern Lights. The site additionally outlines the effect on the power grids, GPS technology, and mobile devices. The last super-storm from the Sun happened in , when a flare so powerful occurred that Cubans saw the Northern Light. Strickland explains that if a similar flare happened today, it would take months to repair the damage.
The article from Inquisitor explains that 3 million mph is an average speed for solar storms. Additionally the Northern Lights is an extraordinary side effect of the these storms. Amos explains that the probe will act as magnet to study the sun, giving scientists the hope that with finer detail they will be able to predict solar flares more accurate and avoid disaster in the future. The video illustrates how the Sun is actually made out of plasma, and as magnetic fields change cycles, eruptions, like solar flares, can happen. This video demonstrates that by analyzing the eruption at different wavelengths, as demonstrated by the multiple colors, scientists are able to study the magnetic field around the Sun.
