You can read it like George and Lorraine never telling their kids the full details, but Lorraine is still really into this night. Hey, remember how Marty kept going for those time travel laffs while he was in the 50s? He vanished into thin air. I really like her a lot. Marty could hardly believe this was his mother talking, even taking the physical transformation into account.

Could this be the same woman who continually bad-mouthed Jennifer?

When did this happen? How come nobody told me? Wow, Brother Dave sure is speaking naturally, and just like who had no idea what just happened would speak! They all calmly go out to see Biff waxing the car:. There in the driveway was a sparkling new BMW. Next to it stood Biff Tannen, polishing diligently. His expression also seemed subtly altered, devoid of the usual arrogance and belligerence.

As he worked, he whistled a happy tune. It makes me think of those dystopian science fiction futures where people get their minds messed with. Is Biff really happy? Something to think about, I guess! He got overruled, but that would make this ending even arguably darker!

The novelizations for Part 2 and 3, as I said, are way less crazy and written for a much lower reading level. Seriously, when Marty's movements have been fully accounted for since his Walkman was destroyed and he never went to the Walkman store I dub thee: He smashed it into smithereens just three pages ago but hah hah continuity across three pages?

In the movie there's still lots of movie time left, but it seems Gipe is racing towards the finish line here? Perhaps at this point he realized he wasn't being paid by the word?? Perhaps he said "aw frig, really? Without a copy of the novelization to refer to, I found myself getting quite annoyed by it, but at the same, I was shocked at some of the excellent points that were brought up.

Some things I had considered and other things hit me with a sudden realisation. Quite often, there is only one line or a couple of words on the blank page. I also think it would have been more enjoyable reading it live, through the blog, dissecting a chapter at a time, before being left hanging on the inevitable cliffhanger. So, this is just a book that was slapped together from a limited run blog it even retains blog-related language and 'tags' for each 'entry', which is worth it because the tags are so funny. Ryan North, author of "Dinosaur Comix," found an insane novelization of the movie "Back to the Future" that was apparently written from an early script draft by an over-the-top melodramatic author, and he has so much to say about it that he writes basically a blog entry about each page.

It's the experience of ragging on a dumb book with your friends, but it's the perfect book - not to mention a chance to reflect on how great "Back to the Future" really is, through negative comparison to some of the weird choices in the novelization. Had to stop reading in bed because my laughs were shaking our queen-size and my wife's sighs were all the warning I needed. Just as funny on the couch. It's not exactly the same experience as reading the original tumblr blog that originated this book, which included GIFs in all their animated glory, but still worth keeping around in your e-book reader.

There are some gems in here, and I'm not talking only about the humor. A good example is Ryan's interesting theory about meta-time and how it affects the way time travelling works in the BttF movies.

All in all, this holds great value for the low price you can get it at. If it's portentous enough, you can write an analysis longer than the work you're critiquing. But who woulda thought you could write a four hundred page treatise on the novelization of Back to the Future -- or to give it it's proper title, Steven Spielberg Presents: Back To The Future: And yet that's exactly what Ryan Everyone knows you can write a book-length analysis of a serious literary work.

And yet that's exactly what Ryan North has done. Well, to be totally accurate, he did a blog series dissecting the novelization on a page-by-page basis, then turned it into a book which is two hundred pages longer than the work it's critiquing. Well, how about the fact that the author was stung to death by bees just a year after finishing this book. Wikipedia says so in fact, that's practically all it says about the guy beyond his bibliography. Also, the guy wrote like a cranky old man who only has a theoretical knowledge of '80s teenagers likely based upon the punk rock episode of Quincy , so the entire book is full of hilarious bits about how Marty really digs "sound reproduction".

This books ends up being like a novelization of an MST3K episode, with North giving us just enough excerpts from the source that we can understand how ridiculous it is without having to go through the trouble of reading it which is nice considering it's long out of print. Also, book-Marty is a real dick. Apr 19, Richard rated it it was amazing. Problem, Gipe is like the worst author ever and the script itself doesn't make sense most the time. What is originally intended to be a review of the highlights soon becomes a page-by-page review of the book in absolute detail.

The result is a book longer than the novelisation that it is reviewing. The closest other example to this would be RedLetterMedia's minute review of Star Wars Episode 1 that you should go watch if you haven't seen it before. ZERO Often, books are described as "laugh out loud funny" but it's never true. Like Gipe will just throw in references to pre-Depression Era movies as if a time-travelling 80s teen would naturally say things like that.

I own a copy of the original novelization, though I never got very far before I gave up on it. Ryan North did not. He went through the whole thing, several times, and noticed just how insane it was. In this ebook, he goes into depth, picking through the bizarre word choices, the oddness of the early first draft of the movie, and just how charmless it can be without the actor Hilarious.

I haven't laughed this much while reading a book in years. At some points I actually had to put my kindle down for a bit, because I was laughing too much. I'm not sure which was funnier - the over-the-top extremes the book goes to, or Ryan North's descent into madness that comes along with it. And yet, despite the humor, there's actually a lot of depth to the book.

Ryan North takes a look into the lore of the series as a whole and debates the logic and consistency of time travel in the BttF universe including offering his own theories, which, whether they were tongue in cheek or not, were actually pretty fascinating. Going in, I expected something that poked fun at an old novelization of a movie series I love. By the end, I got that, and a bit more, as well as a deeper understanding of the BttF-verse as a whole.

I've been reading his Dinosaur Comics for years, and following his writing projects for about as long the Machine of Death anthology being one of my favorites of all time. His style of humor is perfect for pointing out the absolute ridiculousness of the subject of the book, the novelization of Back to the Future, as written by George Gipe.

I don't have much to say about this other than its hilarious and you should get it if you're even remotely familiar with the Back to the Fu I love Ryan North.
