Garlic, Mint, and Sweet Basil - Jean-Claude Izzo
A city situated literally and figuratively on the edge of Europe, looking out as it does on the Mediterranean and North Africa in particular. With its cultural mix, class consciousness and encroaching corporatisation, it's a perfect city for a certain type of noir sensibility. No doubt about it, Izzo, like his protagonist Fabio Montale, feels that he has less in common with French culture than with the Mediterranean mix encompassing his city.

So not only do we get essays on Marseilles culture, but on the origins of Mediterranean noir as well as a short story featuring Fabio. So it's not surprising that he places James M. As Izzo says, "The annual world income of transnational criminal organizations is in the region of a thousand billion dollars, a figure equivalent to the combined gross national product of those countries categorized as low-income. This is an evocative and touching book- there's even a short section listing Montale's favorite places in Marseilles, his favorite books and music- that read like a series of love letters.
His use of the noir genre is not limited simply to description but penetrates deep into the heart of the incongruities, leaving room for sociological reflection and for a return to his generation's collective memory, and above all, gives sense to the present day. The short story, however, is a fitting example of Izzo's contributions to noir. Despite the shortcomings, these essays provide a look into the crafting of the details and settings which color his fiction. I'd consider reading it again, after some time and further thought.
One positive, though, is the number of musicians, region Quick Review: One positive, though, is the number of musicians, regional writers, etc. Perhaps these writers, etc. That, I can personally affirm, is spot on.
Nov 07, Adam McPhee rated it did not like it Shelves: There's not much here. A few essays about how he loves his hometown of Marseilles and the Mediterranean, and then a bit on a his noir trilogy, which I'd like to read but have been unable to track down.
I did like the part about Oedipus being the original noir.
Reward Yourself
Not just the grim outcome, but the fact that it starts with a stranger coming to a town where he's unwelcome, and that it's short enough that you can read it in a single sitting, like all good noir. May 10, kasia rated it really liked it. A pleasant read with some interesting ideas. Definitely veers into what I perhaps unfairly think of as stereotypical Frenchman faults tired tropes of "mysterious" women, tendency towards pompousness, strangely flat description but when balanced against the good parts genuinely moving moments of feeling, intriguing juxtapositions and musings on Mediterranean culture , it comes out ahead.
Garlic, Mint, and Sweet Basil: Essays on Marseilles, The Mediterranean, and Noir Fiction
Un mini racconto, una dimostrazione d'amore e tante riflessioni scritte come sempre in modo magistrale. Jul 01, Gregory Baer rated it really liked it. In some of these essays, Marseilles and the sea become so palpable that it engenders longing beyond measure, felt as a kind of madness. Other pieces are a bit uneven, but I couldn't bring myself to give it less than four stars for "Marseilles Between Sea and Light" alone.
