I bought the Kindle version of this book and I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. The poetry does not lose any format in the e-book version and the various poems and authors are easily accessible. Also, the footnotes are easy to get to, which I had found in some e-books to be next to impossible to find.
As for the anthology itself, I can only give the highest acclaim. The range and variety of poetry and poetic schools in this book is astounding. Rarely outside of a university textbook, can one go through so many different time periods and schools of poetry. Even then, this anthology exceeds many textbooks in that it is not limited to one school, time period, or nationality of poetry.
If you are expecting academic influence in this book in the way of editors and long introductions to authors and schools of poetry, you will find little. What this anthology amounts to is one man putting together his favorite poems by his favorite poets.
That being said Roetzheim still gives wonderful insight into each poem with footnotes including rhyme scheme, meter, themes of the poem, and definitions for the more obscure words. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in poetry. It is a great collection for everyone from those new to poetry to college professors and everyone in between. There are many wonderful classics and some worthy "new comers" in this volume.
It is difficult to create a compendium that could also become a classic. This is close but not quite there as I can not leave it on the shelf. I really wish it had come with a fair warning that there are poems contained therein that are NOT appropriate for younger eyes. I bought this to be a family volume and it is not that book. Still, I'll enjoy reading the vast array until such time as I can place it on the shelf which will bring literary debate to the table between newly grown adults. Again, not suitable for younger eyes but a fairly rich collection for adults. One person found this helpful.
Roetzheim is a great purchase which has revealed to me so many beautiful poems I hadn't known about and from such a wide variety of poets. I am a musician and composer who likes to compose music to classic poetry. My compliments to Mr. Roetzheim on his choice of poets and their work.
The poetry makes pleasurable reading and I continue to find poems that appeal to me each and every time I read the book.

One of the things I like best about this well-presented volume is the editor's footnotes that have proven especially helpful for older poetry and for contemporary poetry that is more obscure. He presents notes on form rhyme and meter , vocabulary and sometimes on the poet's underlying message.
It's a huge tome and is something I reach for when insomnia takes over. That's one reason I appreciate having it on my kindle. I really wanted to love this book, but I don't. There are some decent poems in this book but it reminded me more of my poetry class in high school that I would have liked it to. If you are looking for an introduction to poetry, you would enjoy this.

It spans many types of poetry. I read every poem in this long annotated volume. It's well done regarding the chronology of poetry, and it's easy to use randomly as well. Many opportunities for connecting to media as well, which I have not used. It took several years to whip it, but I did, and I refer to it often when I need my poetry fix. Looked nice and read well. Gave to mother as a gift. Customers who bought this item also bought. Oh, What a Busy Day. A First Book of Poems. Children's Book of Virtues. Share your thoughts with other customers.

Such a lovely collection of poems some extracts some entire. My personal favourite which I still know by heart is "I eat my peas with honey" I eat my peas with honey I've done it all my life They do taste kind of funny But it keeps them on my knife.
I would like to buy this book for every child in my family. Ordered book as my sister had found it on line. It was a book I had as a child and dearly loved but it had got lost over the years. It was a blast from the past and just as good as I remembered it. The illustrations are wonderful.
It will be treasured by me and shared with my grandchildren so they can love it as much as I did. Great variety of poems to please all. Decades ago we read an earlier version of this book to our small children. They loved the rhymes and spent so many hours with Fujikawa's illustrations that the covers have gone with the endpapers and what's left has lost a lot of stitches too. Now our daughter is expecting her first baby and is eager to share this extraordinary collection of nursery rhymes with her own infant! There are many nursery rhyme collections, but surely this is the best.
My daughter had this book when she was a little girl, and she was delighted to receive a reprint of this beloved book. My daughter was given this book of child's poetry over 40 years ago, it has been very much loved and is now rather tatty. I was so pleased to find it still published and bought it for my great grand daughter. It hasn't changed and I'm delighted with it.
