#1685 PLAIN SOCKS VINTAGE KNITTING PATTERN
Or do I use US 6 needles? Many thanks and many thanks for posting this pattern! I appreciate it very much! Reply Marg says November 21, at 6: They are for my local neonatal unit. Reply Madree Roberts says October 5, at Reply cheryl says October 3, at 9: If you knit in the round, it gets too tight at the top of the hat when you are working on only a few stitches. Some people have suggested the Magic Loop method as a solution for that. Reply suzanne corkran says September 4, at 7: Reply Madree Roberts says August 18, at Does anyone know to whom I might donate these hats Reply Mimi says August 18, at 5: We have in our area a charity group called Caring Hands and they need baby hats to give to help the needy!
You might want to look into that! God bless Reply Madree Roberts says August 19, at Would it be ok for me to make a handful of copies of this pattern for my group to use? Reply Priss says April 6, at 3: I use 4 size 6dpns and divided them amongst 3 needles. Reply Barbara says January 23, at 1: Knitted this way there is no side seam to sew up. Reply Beverly says January 24, at I will have to investigate that further!
Reply Barbara says January 26, at Reply Robyn Harrower says January 22, at 5: I used to knit for the tiny babies in the major hospitals in Sydney. I done this for over 20 years. I intend donating these hats to my local hospital. They are always so grateful to receive anything. My grandson had a purple hat with a big pom pom when he was born.
Thank you for the patterns. Reply Barbara says January 22, at 9: Also my 2 granddaughters were both preemies. The preemies have a hard time holding their temperatures up, and they really need baby hats to be able to survive. I love your pattern and have made 6 of them in the last 2 days. I will continue to use your pattern for the babies. Thank you so very much for this pattern. Reply Carol says November 23, at I intend making these for the hospital where my grand daughters were born.
Reply Beverly says November 16, at 8: Thanks so much for your comment! Reply Tina says September 29, at 8: A friend of hers would like me to knit one for her 2 year old son. Could you please let me know how many stitches you would use and what size needles? Reply Beverly says September 29, at 8: Reply Tina says September 30, at 6: Reply Linnet says September 26, at Hospitals in my area are asking for purple hats to hand out in November to spread awareness of the period of crying babies can go through. Reply Dorothy May Bell says September 4, at 9: Was glad I checked for a newborn cap knit pattern on internet.
Our local hospital is going to be opening a maternity unit. I thought it would be nice to donate some caps as a opening gift donation. Reply Jan says August 9, at 9: I had thought it would be nice to knit some newborn caps as an opening gift. At the end odf checking my e-mails I decided to check the internet for a pattern. At first I was just going to check back on the site later but noticed the one for you that specified for hospital newborn caps.
Glad I decided to check. My printer is not working so I copied it by hand. Am looking forward to making them. Will let you know how they turn out and how they are accepted. I use a pattern not seen here, Knit 2, Purl 2 until decreasing. I also have a crochet pattern I would be glad to share. Hospitals I have dealt with ask that we not use pom poms. Reply Mimi says July 25, at It even looks too narrow to be used as a premie! I was very disappointed since the actual pattern itself was beautiful. If I did do this correctly , then it needs to be adjusted.
Reply Beverly says July 26, at This is probably a matter of gauge with you getting more stitches to the inch. I will copy and paste in here my reply to a comment above about how to adjust for gauge: You would multiply 6 times Round that up to an even number 64 and that is how many stitches you would cast on. You want an even number of stitches so your decrease rows at the top of the hat are easier. So to sum that up: Knit yourself a sample swatch2.
Find out how many stitches you have per inch3. Multiply that by Round that up to an even number. That number is how many stitches you will cast on. I did do a swatch and I was doing 6 stitches per inch. I have a few questions. Do you happen to know what yarn brand was used for the blue hat with specks of light brown in it? Thank — You so much for your patience and time!! Reply Beverly says July 27, at 6: To knit until you have a certain measurement gives you the control of how many rows you need to knit to get to the correct length.
Sometimes though they end up replacing a discontinued item with something similar.

Reply Brandy says July 2, at I used the bernat satin white and it turned out so beautiful!! I like to use the smallest loom to loom hats for newborn babies in the hospital, as I can make many more of them with the loom in the amt of time it takes to loom up this hat, but for those special gifts for friends, I will always use this pattern.
Reply Jasmine says September 30, at Do you know how many more stitches to cast on for a size bigger? Like maybe for around 6 months? Reply Beverly says October 3, at My gauge with this pattern was 4. So to add a couple more inches, you would want to cast on about 8 or 10 more stitches because you need an even number. The decreases at the top would still work in the same way knitting 2 together across the row. Reply nicole says September 19, at Reply Samantha says July 20, at 4: How would I make this for an adult? Reply Beverly says July 21, at 8: You will need to know the circumference of an adult head and how many stitches per inch you are knitting do a small sample swatch with the yarn you want to use to figure that out.
You would multiply those numbers to get the number of stitches to cast on in this example you would cast on 66 stitches. You could follow the pattern from there, doing the decrease rows at the end in the same type of way. I have never tried making this for an adult, but that would be the method you would use to give it a try.
Just make sure you cast on an even number of stitches. Reply Robyn Harrower says May 10, at 8: My new grandson arrives in 9 weeks and winter is just a few weeks away in Australia. I also have twins due around the same time. I have knitted beanies for premmie babies for many years until I was diagnosed with early stages of MS. I desperately wanted to do a shawl for the new baby 4 years work and he will need beanies as well. Thanks again for sharing your pattern as my pattern book was borrowed and not returned.
Regards Robyn Reply Beverly says May 11, at 1: I used size 4. Shawls, baby clothes etc so this will be included. Thank you once again Reply Lesley Mills says March 9, at 6: I was given some pale blue shiny wool no idea what type it is but thought I would just try this out as it seemed a nice simple pattern to try. Small but fairly stretchy. Thank you I will be making this again. Reply Beverly says March 9, at Reply Marylyn says March 4, at 2: I am getting ready to knit one or more of these hats for my newest grandchild due in April.
How should I adjust the pattern to use DK yarn so the hat is the right size? Reply Beverly says March 6, at 8: These hats are about You would then round that up to 64 to have an even number and cast on that number of stitches. From there you should be able to follow the pattern along with a few minor adjustments.
Reply Marylyn says March 6, at 9: Reply Sabrina says February 9, at 2: Do you have a similar pattern for baby Booties?

Reply Beverly says February 10, at 7: The basics that you need to know for this pattern are how to cast on put stitches on your needle so you can get started , know how to purl so you can do the ribbing which is knit one stitch, and then purl one stitch and keep doing that all the way across a row , and you need to know how to decrease make fewer stitches on your needle by knitting two stitches together at a time. If you can do those things, you can knit these hats. Reply Skywise says January 22, at Like you said, you can knit up a bunch in lots of colors! Thanks again x Reply Chris says December 26, at 5: Reply Trish says September 25, at 9: I had been searching the net and having the same problem you describe — nothing was quite what I wanted.
THIS is what I wanted. Reply Tolsa Greenberg says April 4, at 6: It can be made with a sport or worsted yarn and I always used a bernat yarn. I want to make them for a friend's new twin grandchildren coming soon. I will try your pattern soon to donate to the local hospital preemie unit. Tolsa Greenberg Reply Bev says February 21, at 9: You might also have to add an extra inch or so before you start the decrease rows. The decrease rows could be done the same way, knitting two together across the rows alternating with a purl row. So increase the number of stitches you cast on probably to something between 70 to 80 stitches.
Make sure you cast on an even number of stitches. Reply Jennifer says February 20, at 3: It turned out so adorable — thanks! My question is, can you tell me how to adjust the pattern to make it fit an 18 month old? I really wanted to make one for my daughter too. Reply hanan says February 3, at 5: Reply Bev says January 16, at It just adds a little something extra.
You can be creative and add your own special touches. Reply Anonymous says January 16, at 3: I was thinking about garnishing it with a flower. Reply Kathryn says January 14, at 7: I've been doing hats for preemies for a while now. They are tiny but knit up quick. I use double points and knit in the round, but i recently learned how to use 2 same-sized circular needles to knit in the round. This way you don't have to worry about the whole hat fitting on a circular needles. Enjoy your site, as always. Reply Anonymous says December 28, at I came across this pattern as my daughter is in labor with another little love her 2nd baby my 3rd grandbaby So I am knitting it as she is in labor now. My second grandson is due Christmas Eve, and I was looking for a simple cap for him to wear.
I'm new to knitting, so this is just what I was looking for. I'm already on my second one! Debbie Reply Jill says November 26, at 6: One of my second grade students will be a big sister any day now, so I knitted this super cute hat today for the baby so I'm ready! Reply Bev says November 16, at I used to crochet a little bit but it was never as easy for me as knitting was and I finally gave up and just stuck with knitting.
However you could crochet a small sample swatch to figure out how many stitches were in an inch. You would then multiply that by To make the decrease rows at the top you could maybe single crochet in every other stitch across a row. Reply Bev says September 20, at 7: My gauge was 4. This means my piece was about So your goal with different sized needles would be to still knit a hat that is about Knit a small swatch with your size needles and yarn and see how many stitches per inch you are getting.
Let's say you are using smaller needles and are getting 6 stitches per inch. Reply Anonymous says September 19, at 7: I think I have size 3 or bigger. It would mean row 2 would be purling on top of knit stitches, so I wasnt sure if Id gone wrong - very new to this: Very new to this: On row 1 of heel flap, should wrong side purl or right side knit be facing me? So I probably had my yarn the wrong end of the needle somehow, not sure how I did that! Exactly how much sock weight yarn will I need to knit a pair of these socks in your size? Hi Susan, I was wondering how you change the pattern if making for a man? I just love your socks, thanks so much for you patterns and your help!!
Hi Susan, thanks you so much for all of your help with knitting. I was wondering how you change your pattern if doing a pair of socks for a man. Your socks are amazing, thank you!!!! Making socks using needles is not easy! But, your provided guideline seems to be okay and pleasing to start again. Earlier, I stared but could not make a sock properly. Hope, your guideline can give a good pair! I love using your sock pattern. I've made some lovely socks but I notice that after I wear them for a bit they become slouchy and very stretched out.
Am I doing something wrong? Love your sock pattern!! In one of your blogs or podcasts, you mentioned using a small bit of yarn for the heel flap so when you return to knitting the foot, your striping is continued. I have tried adding this technique but find my foot yarn is ending up at the opposite site of the foot. Any hints to help me utilize this technique, I love the idea. Hi Susan, I love this pattern and am wondering if you could update to include the technique of using a separate, small bit of yarn for the heel so the pattern continues from the leg to the foot.
I would love to see a step-by-step video of you knitting the socks Susan! It was be very helpful especially for all of us who are knew to sock knitting! Would that be something you would consider? Thanks for all your help! I have a pattern that says for the heel flap knit as many rows as your have stitches so for me that would be 30 rows up.. It says only pick up half on each side.. That makes no sense I need to pick up every row correct? Unknown, You are slipping the first stitch on each row of the heel flap, therefore you will have half of the number of rows on each side in slipped stitches.
You pick up one stitch in each slipped stitch along both sides of the heel flap. I hope this helps! Thanks so much for the post. One thing I do that I find really helpful is knit the first 2 stitches on each row of the heel flap garter stitch. It makes picking up the stitches later so incredibly easy as the needle slips right through the garter stitch "bumps. Is it 6 " from the start of the sock before you begin the heel flap OR 6" of stockinette after the ribbing? Thank you sooooo much Susan! I went from a gal who said she'd never make socks because of the dpns to a gal who has made one pair of slouchy socks a bit more of a detailed pattern for my first try lol and now to a regular pair of socks.
I have 2 on the go and am loving it!!!! It is actually very easy to work on dpns and working with the 3 needles and the 4th to knit with. I can see how you love having at least one pair of socks on the go at all times I am using your pattern as my go-to pattern Thank you so much for all your love, kindness and sharing I appreciate you and I love to come and visit.
All my heart, Deborah: Hi Susan - thanks for this easy but perfect sock pattern! I just finished my first sock right up to the step where there are 12 stitches on each of two needles and am ready to cast off. But I am confused because after putting the stitches from needle three onto needle one the working yarn is in the middle of the needle rather than at one end.
So I'm not sure how to proceed with Kitchener Stitch. Thank you for your time! Love this because it is so clear. I learned a pattern such as this from my mother-in -law. She didn't give me a written pattern as such. She just taught me a sliding scale which I confess has disintegrated in my mind over the last few years of her passing, May she rest in peace. This is so clear there is no room for doubt. I love making socks because its so portable and the simple pattern just makes it so I don't have to count every row and my many grandies can come and choose freely from my yarn stash what colours they want.
She also gave me a pattern, written this time, for workman's socks to go into boots. She even made a mistake in the first part maybe to see if I was actually using her patterns! Once I fixed the cast on amount on each needle they come out perfect and very fast as they are knitted on larger needles with bulkier wool for the winter logger or construction worker Thanks so much for sharing this standard. Love this kind of heel! This may be a stupid question, but could you tell me what foot circumference this pattern fits?

I don't know if I need to cast on more stitches on less. Hi Nina, It fits my foot with a 9-inch circumference but it could fit a foot a little bigger or smaller. It fits my foot with 1-inch of negative ease, so it is a snug fit. Hi Susan Love your sock pattern. I am now on my fifth pair. For some reason I'm not coming out even on both sides. I was wondering if you could post the dimensions, esp around instep.
This sock looks really great for my dh but he has a wide foot. Hi Grace, You can figure out all of the dimensions by taking the number of stitches on the needles, including at the instep, and dividing it by the number of stitches per inch. I hope it will fit your husband: Susan, Do you know it's just awesome. Susan, on the heel flap is it a total of 32 alternating rows 16 each , or 16 alternating rows 8 each? Thank you for your help!!

Hi Susan, thank you for this pattern and guidance, you have given me the confidence to try again. I wonder if you could help me. I thought I would purchase the Bryson Stainless steel sock blockers and have them ready when I finish. Since I have never knit socks before I really don't know if they will turn out on the looser or tighter side.
What would you suggest I purchase? Lori, I wear the same size as you and my sock blockers are mediums and I think I would order the medium in this case. Susan, please help me! I did the heel flap and and turned the heel, but when I went to go pick up stitches for the gusset, I keep finding 17 slip stitches on the first gusset instead of I don't know what I did wrong. Could this be because after alternating rows 1 and 2 16 times, the instructions say to knit row 1 one more time?
If so, how do I proceed? This is my first sock ever and it was going so perfectly until now. Hi Emily, It won't matter if you have 16 or 17 slip stitches on the sides of the gusset. You can pick up one stitch per slipped stitch and then you just decrease for the gusset until you get back to your original number of stitches, which is I often pick up 16 or 17 stitches on the gusset side. Katie I found a very tiny size one with a very short cable st my knit shop. I got frustrated with dropping stitches and this was useful until the heel flap.

I love working toe up socks and use the circular needle. Appreciate it if you could give me a super simple pattern for toe up socks. Can someone please tell me how to make this pattern with self-striiping yarn and maintain the stripes across the instep. This is the same pattern that I use, but, I always have pooling across the instep. Thank you for any help. Can someone please tell me how to do the heel flap and gusset with self-striping yarn and maintain the stripes across the instep. I always get pooling. Thanks for any help on this. Beachrose, The best way to do this is to start the heel flap with a contrast color or to use the other end of your working yarn.
Complete the heel flap and turn with the new yarn. Then go back to the working yarn when you start the gusset. This will help keep your yarn in pattern. I hope this helps. First pair of sox. Not having any trouble until I get to the end of the heel turn. I'm making the men's sox. How many stitches will I have on needle 1 before I start picking up the 18 st.
