This is in no way going to end badly. This is in no way coincidental or a situation to be completely wary of. So they stroll up to this engagement feast, where the jerk from the bet is like, "Everyone, look how beautiful my future bride is," until the guy rides up and goes, "No she's not! I found someone prettier! Osra gets off her horse and preens around and all the peasants go, "Ooooh, aaaaah, you are way prettier than the bride. Here, guy, take your money, you win the bet.
She takes the bet money from the man, gives it back to the bride and tells her to buy herself something pretty so her husband will love her more.

Osra is beautiful and intelligent, but knows nothing of love. Despite this, every man she meets falls madly for her, and most of them end up dying by their own hand for it- a fact which would feel like a running joke if it were not treated with such solemn, respectful dignity.

Mix in some casual Victorian-era prejudice, and you have a fairly flawed middle volume in an otherwise enjoyable trilogy. There's still a lot of rather blithe blood and guts in the swashbuckling sense but his wit and heart shine. And we even get to see a heroic Hentzau--a priest, yet! It is set during an earlier time in Ruritania's history, as the beautiful Princess Osra is courted, and trifles with men's hearts, then learns the consequences. By the time she finally falls in love, she's been dealt some sharp lessons. I Anthony Hope had mastered his inimitable style by the time he wrote this series of short stories.

It's a bit more dour see above about blood and guts than light-hearted, and it isn't as all as stylish and witty as Dolly Dialogues which I think shows him at the top of his form, but it's really lovely in places, painfully poignant in others. Clear Victorian era writing with the scanned illustrations showing late 's attire while the story setting was supposed to be s or earlier. A beautiful collection of short stories, revolving around the central character of Princess Osra, that are combined together into a novel.

Mildly entertaining, but no match for the Prisoner of Zenda and Rupert of Hentzau.

He performs his act, in most cases, without expecting Osra to recognize his deed, much less acknowledge or reward it. Sooner or later, Osra does in fact recognize and acknowledge the act; she does not, however, requite the love that inspired it.
The Heart of Princess Osra is not as memorable as the other two components of the trilogy, but it expands and deepens the fictional world Hope created. The narrative may seem sentimental and insubstantial to the modern reader, but it is of a style common in Victorian literature. This volume covers some of the historical background of Ruritania , giving additional information which may aid in the enjoyment of the two full-length novels. For example, the role of Albert von Lauengram in Black Michael's conspiracy is illuminated when one learns that he was descended from Rudolf III's younger brother [ citation needed ].
A passing reference to the burning of the White Palace in , and thus the conclusion that there was an Revolution in Ruritania, as elsewhere throughout Europe, highlights the social and political divisions described in the other works.
