Last week we had the wonderful opportunity to tour the Glensheen mansion in Duluth, Minnesota.
We also spotted lots of Grueby tiles throughout the home including this one you see below which is located over a fireplace. In addition, the conservatory was completely outfitted in deep green Grueby tiles, and even featured a Grueby drinking fountain! A great majority of the Mission oak pieces in our collection date from the early s and have beautiful deep colors to the wood. While it would appear that a stain has been applied to these pieces, it has not.
The furniture would be placed into an airtight room with shallow containers of ammonia. Tannic acid in the wood reacts with the ammonia and provides the patina we see on pieces today. Furniture could be left in the chamber for as long as 48 hours, depending on what depth of color you wanted to achieve. While the result was beautiful, fuming was not healthy for the person who had to remove the furniture from the room.
Today we no longer fume our furniture but create equally beautiful pieces by layering finishes. A Harvey Ellis riff on a M. The versatile table could be used for dining, as a library table, or as a conference table. The Stickley draw-top table model has undergone many different looks through the years. Early designer Peter Hansen developed and patented a guide system for Stickley in that was used on Cherry Valley dining tables for 40 years. Today, it has been modified for use in a butterfly jointed mission oak table. Those guests will want you to keep demonstrating the cool guide system.

This massive drop leaf, gate legged table was the piece de resistance of the Cherry Valley Collection. For thirty years Stickley produced and sold this wonderful Colonial style table.
