I cheered for them and I was truly invested to their story, which I think is critical for romance stories. Perdita did good to tell a great romance story with interesting and powerful characters. Beside the romance, there was actually a plot there. Sometimes the romance stories involves only around the main couple and everything else is ignored but there was a solid plot in Shadow Scars. I appreciate it a lot especially since the plot and the crime solving made the story thrilling and paced it a little bit more.
Those scenes were a good breaks from the romance without making anything awkward. Shadow Scars was a pick me up for me since I read it when I had hectic time in studies. It truly was perfect quick read that made me want to read even more. It was very enjoyable, characters, plot and the writing style. Perdita did a fine job telling Conner and Seth's story - and it's not over.
There's a sequel for this and I can't wait to dive in and learn more what happens in Haven City. If you're in need of good pick me up book or good romance with a plot, then I highly recommend Shadow Scars. This was a fairly quick, easy read but not exactly what I was expecting. I liked both MCs and thought the chemistry between them was good but the overall story was hit and miss for me.
I honestly expected more with the cases they were working and instead they were more background noise to the characters and their various issues. Not that it wasn't good but I really wanted more since both Connor and Seth are detectives. I'll eventually read more if the series but it isn't one I'm dying to continue right now. A murder with paranormal activity. One is a shifter and one has magical talent and sees visions. I wish they had found the entity responsible for arming hunters with special tools.
Have to read the next book in the series and hope they can figure out how to neutralize or kill it. This author has several volumes to her name but either this is a very early effort or she still does not master her craft. The story is interesting and writing not too bad but there are many things that simply do not work. Plot is essentially based on the characters' inability to communicate: Seth looks more juvenile than guilt-ridden and his habit of never telling the truth is first of all annoying and second hardly justified.
The plot itself could have used more development -and therefore more pages- and a better pacing, especially in the coming together of the leads who we are told are attracted to each other while the reader can never really feel all that heat. Writing is also faulty: Problem is she does not know how to describe people and situation that way, so we are facing characters who say about themselves: A thorough revision might be needed. I had forgotten how much I love this series. For the start of a series, it was quite good, and I do plan on continuing the journey with these characters.
This story has a bit of everything in it. Cops, crooks, murder, mayhem, sizzling sex, shifters, seers, magical healers, secrets, lies, it was breathtakingly wonderful. It all flowed together so effortlessly, and it was just so believable.

The pace and the action was just enough to keep me on edge until the very end, and then it's over. But it's not, because there is a 2. And I need to start that one right now.
