Coulter was a speaker in one of the workshops. After my first year as an administrator, I wanted someone to tell me how to organize all of the information that was coming across my desk. This is the book with answers. Coulter has many years of experience as a high school principal.

His organizational strategies are already in place in my office. Some of the ideas are common sense; others are innovative.

I would recommend this book to anyone who shuffles many papers, has many meetings, and is responsible for many people. This book is straightforward, practical, and full of tips that I will continue to use. It was one of the education books that I actually enjoyed reading and thought gave me useful information. Coulter's book is awesome.

Coulter has written a book that from beginning to end is not only helpful but valuable to me as a third year principal. I compare my situation to a pretty good golfer who is looking to improve. It that case, now is the time to pick up well written articles for Golf Magazine and get something from them. Nelson's book does not cover unfamilar topics It provides priceless insights about very familiar topics. I have already read the book once,and am more than half-way through it again.

This book will lower my handicap at the principalship. I loved this book! I loved the conservation style of the book and reading it felt like a conversation with an old friend- I found it calming and focusing. The suggestions and advice are practical and easy to implement; the tech world would call these "turn key" solutions!

Another assistant principal at school read the first couple of pages and described it as a "warm blanket.

What a wealth of information! I think it is a wonderful resource and an excellent summer reading choice for administrators. For example, you might send a letter to parents explaining what you are doing and why. Second, do no more test preparation than is absolutely necessary. Some experts have argued that a relatively short period of introducing students to the content and format of the tests is sufficient to produce scores equivalent to those obtained by students who have spent the entire year in test-prep mode.

Third, whatever time is spent on test preparation should be as creative and worthwhile as possible. Avoid traditional drilling whenever you can. Fourth, administrators and other school officials should never brag about high or rising scores. To do so is not only misleading; it serves to legitimate the tests. In fact, people associated with high-scoring schools or districts have a unique opportunity to make an impact.

We value great teaching and learning, which is precisely what suffers when people become preoccupied with scores. Please join us in phasing them out.

Try to educate those above you whenever it seems possible to do so, but cushion those below you every day.

Otherwise you become part of the problem. As important as I believe these suggestions to be, it is also critical to recognize their limits.
