A new form of communcation is introduced to her, the typing method. People who have trouble communicating, speak via a computer keyboard. She types "i am intelligent" a life changing sentence. With this method, Peyton is finally able to free her understanding and thoughts. She is also able to remove that label that society had on her as a hopeless mental retard. I REALLY liked this book because this girl lived a challenging and abusing life full of labels and judgemental comments and was able to prove society wrong about her knowledge. Payton wasnt hopeless, she was just a girl that needed the right form of communication.

Another reason why i loved this book is because i have an Autistic brother. I relate to it.

I know all the challenges it brings. Its a very hard and stressful work for my family. My brother is 6 years old and his verbal communication isnt so good.

i am intelligent – Peyton Goddard: Advocate For Inclusion

He does not like interacting with people either. Sometimes, he spends time just staring into space, without a clue of whats going on. As his older sister, its very painful for me not being able to hug him or kiss him because he does not like being touched. It is also very hard for me because theres times where i tell him i love him, and all i get back is a stare. When he tries to talk, he stutters and gets really nervous, i know how hard it is for him and its stressful because i want to be able to understand him. This book really inspires me and it gives me so much hope for my brother. Jan 18, Debra Lloyd rated it it was amazing.

As a special educator who has worked with students with autism and the resulting communication disorders, I found this book to be a very real account of what it can be like to live with a child with severe autism. This account details the parents struggle to obtain an appropriate educational setting for their daughter and how Facilitated Communication gave their daughter a voice.

While I have read both good and bad things about FC, it appears to have worked in this situation.

I picked up this book because I read the back and saw how it covered the struggles of a mother, an autistic daughter named Peyton and a community in search of the best treatment for her Autism.

This true story takes place from the 70s to early s where Autism was mostly unheard of and thus more difficult to treat. She put in so much hard work.

Her growth over the book is astounding. I enjoyed reading about Diane—the mother— and Pat— the father, and their perseverance in doing everything they could for Peyton. Her friends and brother were sweet, too. The abuse pieces were surprising and shocking and not for the light of heart. It reminds me of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, yet knowing this book is nonfiction puts a hole in your heart reading those pieces.

After suffering 21 years of mistreatment, neglect, and disturbing abuse by those supposed to aid her—extended family, doctors, and teachers—Peyton is finally given the chance to express her intelligence and awareness. From years of being dismissed by the education system as lacking the ability to learn, to eventually graduating from college as valedictorian, Peyton proves that inclusion of disabled people is necessary for their livelihood and growth, regardless of the challenge it presents to society.

The journey of this family is a teaching of extraordinary love and all the mountain ranges that it can move. Families like the Goddards and those that support them are the teachers of this kind of beautiful challenging journey beyond normal life into the realm of deep dedication to communication. Most people take communication for granted. For some it is a simple task, mastered in an automatic, unconscious way.

For some it is a quest.
