One Girl And Her Dogs: Life, Love and Lambing in the Middle of Nowhere
This is one of the best books I've read for a long time. Emma tells it as it is warts and all, ready to admit when shes made a mistake. What she has achieved in her early years is both remarkable and totally encouraging. She proves if you really put your heart into something and give it everything you've got you can do it. She lives an extremely hard and basic life and gives wonderful accounts of day to day living and how she has built up her little farm.

I've learnt so much as well about dogs an This is one of the best books I've read for a long time. I've learnt so much as well about dogs and sheep and farms, things I never thought would be really interesting, but she has opened my eyes. What a girl - what a book. It was a good, to the point book. I liked finding out about life in a farm in this short novel.
However, at times I felt many aspects of the story where a bit disconnected as the author tried to tell everything that happened to her the first year after acquiring her farm. Still enjoyed it, but it's not my forte, so I found it a bit plain at times, and this might have to do with the fact that I was expecting more dog stories and a lot less sheep.
I have a passion for sheep dog trials and attend as many as I can. Consequently I was really drawn to this book about a young English girl and her sheep dogs.

I certainly wasn't disappointed and marveled at her persistence to establish her own farm in a really remote part of northern England. A very enjoyable read. I really enjoyed this. An honest open account of a young woman who decides to make farming and being a shepherdess her way of life. She tells how her first year at the beautiful but isolated Fallowlees, a National Trust Farm, goes with honesty and clarity.
Its easy to see how much she loves her sheep dogs and the steadfast work they do. Such an interesting insight into the life of a young and female shepherdess.

See a Problem?
But whilst the beautiful scenery offers plenty of scope for contemplation, the chance of a night out on the tiles? And once you add broken generators, gun-wielding madmen and freak blizzards into the mix, Emma's idyllic new life soon seems more Silence of the Lambs than shepherd's delight. With eighty sheep, three dogs and an unreliable phone connection for company, Emma can't help but wonder if she's made the right choice.
Will the arrival of Spring and farmer Dan help to change her mind?
