Neil Youngs Greendale
The songs on that album were a glimpse into the loving, suffering, and complexity at the heart of the adult inner-life. I was fascinated and awakened. It captures his feelings about the war, the news media, the environment, the role of family and small-town America and the inherent power of youth. We wanted to find something new inside of it. The inconvenient truth of Greendale is that Sun Green was right. Just be the rain. You'll be supporting Thrasher's Wheat!

Sun Green has always been my personal super hero. She had a great anti-war campaign going there with the PeacePeeps on Myspace for a while maybe 2 or 3 years ago. I personally think Greendale is Neils finest work. I was lucky enough to have been able to treat myself to the show 4 times and it got better every time. He really gave a great overview of this country's state of affairs. I think the biggest reason that the album wasn't a commercial success and who really cares is that I have never seen such a huge difference in the live performance and the released album.
Believe it or not I was just thinking a couple of days ago that Greendale is my favorite Neil album from the past 10 years. Looks like I'll probably be getting the graphic novel. The person that labeled Greendale an "Audio Novel" is on to something. I'd even say it's Stephen King like.? I've heard that King is a Neil fan. Being a big fan of both King and Young I've sometimes thought the two were comparable in some ways. As far as their vision and talent. I wasn't fortunate enough to see Neil and the Horse on that tour.
Question for AG if you're reading? Has there ever been talk of putting Greendale the movie out on Blu-ray? My copy got sent from Amazon UK this morning, really looking forward to receiving it!
Surreal timing on this one Thrash. I just put Greendale back into my rotation after about a 2 year absence. Can't get it out of my head now. When it came out, I listened to it daily for at least 2 years. I've got a recording of "Twisted Road" from Worcester. I think the new material may be in the same category.
I find myself singing out loud "you're on vacation, we're working" a lot lately. All we do is work work work. Greendale is great work by Young. My first exposure to it was the concert tour then the CD was a let down after that but there was the live solo acoustic DVD that was absolutely brilliant!
Save the Planet For Another Day I can so relate to "rediscovering" Neil. I've done it myself quite frequently, recently and I always seem to get a new apppreciation of an album that might have been cobwebbed for a couple of years for some reason.

Greendale is a very apt and topical album to bring back out of the woodwork. I really love "be the rain" and the live concept that Neil plays it in with sun green mimicking Neil on the megaphone. He is definitely the "prophet of modern rock" There's corruption on the highest floor! Plug the gulf leak with Tony Hayward!

Neil Young's "Greendale" is...
I Live in Another World. The story is ultimately about Michael's transition and corruption , so that arc needs to be seen through.
Sun Green is the central character of "Greendale" - it's about her ascension and how her grandfather's experience tempers her approach to activism. I think Neil has the perfect transitional line as the story shifts - "Sun Green started making waves, the day her grandpa died". RayS , Dec 15, Halfway between Seattle and Portland. The phrases affect me in the moment but I admit that I never listen too much with Neil's overall narrative in mind. I think there easily could have been even more "Greendale". Even if he never got around to it or maybe he did and didn't use it , I think Neil had the intention of writing a song for Lenore - the character we only catches glimpses of in "Carmichael" and "Grandpa's Interview" and who we to know be an art dealer that Earl Green tries do business with.
I also get the impression that if this song from "Prairie Wind" wasn't written specifically for Earl Green with the gender flipped later , it sure could have been. I also think that Earl is "the artist" in "Falling From Above". Although I guess that could just as easily be our exalted narrator himself. I saw 2 of the shows on the tour and the first show was interesting because the album had not yet been released.
We were all hearing it for the first time. It all seemed a bit absurd at first but after awhile the crowd really sat back and got into the show. Liam Brown , Dec 15, RayS and bonus like this. Wow; I've never heard this, but I have been on a Neil Young kick lately for the first time since before this came out. I just checked out this song on youtube and it's great:
