These chapters are written by experienced anaesthetists, but the sections on risk, ethics, research, and education will date rapidly and may indeed prove to be of more interest to the reader looking back in a couple of decades time. One has to ask what is the role of the big textbook?

Some subjects, for instance, regional anaesthesia and syndromes, are covered well in limited space but are better done by stand-alone volumes. Other subjects such as anaesthesia for liver transplantation and for paediatric cardiac surgery are interesting, thoroughly covered, but of limited relevance to the vast majority of paediatric anaesthetists.

Inevitably, one looks to see what is missing. There are some minor points for instance achondroplasia is not mentioned, and anaesthesia for neurosurgery warrants only half a chapter.

Disappointingly for such a major work, there is no stand-alone chapter on anaesthesia for neonates as in the previous editions. Clearly, the book cannot be carried in the pocket for consultation in a hurry, it is a reference work. I am sure that this book is destined to be the standard paediatric textbook for departmental libraries in the UK.
