Plenty of surprises too, even for a jaded reader like myself. The author made excellent use of teenagers in the story, managing to expose human problems that will never go away, but show how circumstances can change them. Well worth a read. Kress always has a good setup for a story, but never goes very deep.

If you like a nice light story, I would recommend it. The ending felt a bit too magical for the hard SF Kress usually provides. But I enjoyed it well enough. See all 80 reviews. Most of the year these colors are masked by great amounts of green coloring. But in the fall, because of changes in the length of daylight and changes in temperature, the leaves stop their food-making process. The chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears, and the yellow to orange colors become visible and give the leaves part of their fall splendor.

At the same time other chemical changes may occur, which form additional colors through the development of red anthocyanin pigments.
