Please try again later. Martin has enjoyed tremendous success using Twitter to connect with fan base for her clients who are mostly sports figures or sports franchises. She is known as "The Twitter Queen. Martin promises to explore both of these and more celebrity-franchise-as-brands in greater detail. I found Renegades Write The Rules highly readable but short on significant substance. As I read, although I was entertained by her stories of celebrities from the sports world who are her primary customers, I became aware that she was holding real information.
For this reason, I feel her work falls short of being a definitive social media guide. Fans of sports celebrities might enjoy it tremendously. Martin's book is not broken down into chapters. There are eight of them in the book as subject headers. One of the things Ms. Martin does well in many of her examples is juxtaposition and she does this to illustrate these rules, contrasting successful and not-so-successful branding.
Although she mostly uses the phrase "social media", she mostly means Twitter. Most of her illustrative examples are outlines of Twitter campaigns with a minor mention of Facebook every now and then. Martin makes a convincing case for success in social media marketing requiring a management team willing to engage and alter some of their thinking. She offers kernels of wisdom, such as considering ROI not just to be "return on investment" but also "return on influence". Over and over she makes her case for the most successful campaigns coming from brands where upper management embraced the concept of employing social media and she means Twitter to exchange ideas with customers.

The book lacked specifics for my tastes, the reason for that becomes clear when one gets to the end of the book. This book leaves you wanting more and Ms. Martin is ready to offer that in her online university, Digital Royal University! This entire book appears to be an advertisement, albeit a highly enjoyable one. Open Preview See a Problem? Thanks for telling us about the problem. Return to Book Page. Nov 18, Deidre rated it really liked it Shelves: Within the first few pages of her book, Renegades Write The Rules, social media consultant Amy Jo Martin amyjomartin skewers a few of the more popular misconceptions about social media.
Martin has worked with sports celebrities such as Dana White, Dwayne Johnson and a whole host of basketball players. Overall, she beats one of my favorite drums, the call to authenticity. To succeed in social media you have to be willing to experiment and to fail at times. One of the things that is particularly useful about the book is that she talks a bit about voice. For example, for Dwayne Johnson there are several areas of focus, what Martin terms value buckets. Value buckets for him include education, inspiration, entertainment, exclusive information, and reciprocation.
Just about everything he talks about on Twitter falls into one of these categories. Martin proves that it is possible to communicate with multiple audiences across the same platform but personality has to remain relatively constant. Of course one of the main discussions about social media is always metrics and return on investment.

Should you share Twitter metrics about your brand with your fan base? The offline experience strengthens the online relationship dramatically. All of this can lead to creating lifelong fans. Martin describes a Phoenix Suns tweet up that rewarded fans with special access. Those fans will never forget that event and will likely be fans for life.
Trust cannot be bought, sold, or finagled. Revenue per fan is an important metric and one to cultivate. The amount of followers is less important that the intensity of that relationship. When it comes to company social media plans, the famous advice from Zappos really says it all: She works with cool brands, celebrities and others that it is rather easy to generate buzz about.
But if you are a true renegade you must forge your own path.

I read the advance reading copy of this guide through NetGalley and at first was concerned that the author's expertise was relevant only to the world of sports celebrity - but not so. And usually that was nothing to do with direct sales. There are metrics to assess the fuzzy area of personal influence and how community building leads to increased revenue - or monetisation as the return on increased influence in the niche group of followers. This book is an excellent reminder of that fact that no matter how we chose to interact with social media, in the end it is one human being connecting and inspiring and sharing their ideas with another human being.
