Zachary Kleinmann is a stay at home dad, not by his choice but strictly due to financial reasons in that his wife Leah makes more money. As Sean nears his 4th birthday and the inevitability of starting school, Zach is faced with the prospect of lonely days with little to do. On their regular visit to the local library Sean and Zach are treated to a performance of Heidi by a local acting troupe, and the privilege of meeting Ginger the eccentric leader of the troupe.

Circumstances beyond their control change life for the father and son forcing Zach to take the bull by the horns follow his dream and take back his life. Along the way there are tears, triumphs and a second chance at love. Beautifully written by a skilled storyteller, Cool Side of the Pillow is a lovely read. Filled with a diverse cast of characters, some quirky, some unlikeable, and each written with such intricate detail you feel you are actually in their presence as you read. I found myself wanting to strangle to woman in most every scene she was in.

On the other hand, the situations Zach finds himself in are nothing short of hilarious and will have you laughing along with the antics. My final thought; this book is a winner. Dec 29, Rick Flynn rated it really liked it. I bought Gregory's book, Cool Side of the Pillow, the day it was released. I downloaded it to my Kindle and then tried to get time to read it. During a much needed vacation, I finally had the time. I'm so happy I waited. It spoke to me exactly when I needed it. A common theme when you hit forty years old is the sense of "what's next?

Cool Side of the Pillow

The problem with addressing those questions in fiction, is somet I bought Gregory's book, Cool Side of the Pillow, the day it was released. The problem with addressing those questions in fiction, is sometimes writers take it over the top. Allen didn't do that. Cool Side of the Pillow held a pace that could be compared to sitting on a hot porch in the South somewhere drinking lemonade and feeling the gulf breeze wash over you.

By that, I don't mean it was a slow paced read, but it was a purposeful pace. You wanted to savor each moment. I loved that Zach didn't start defining himself by jumping out of an airplane, or buying a little red sports car. I don't want to give away any spoilers or too much of the plot, but his transformation was more subtle.

Allen has an ear and eye for characters. I noticed that big time in one of his previous novels, Patchwork of Me. He certainly doesn't let us down with this one.

Repeatedly flipping to the cool side of the pillow isn’t the best way to sleep.

Zach is a great character, but so is Ginger, the aging actress who makes a difference in Zach's life. Ginger is part Baby Jane and part Norma Desmond. In other words, she is a character you want to see more of. Allen I wouldn't mind seeing a prequel that focused on Ginger. Feb 10, Gsand rated it it was amazing. Gregory Allen has become a new favorite author of mine.

I don't usually read "real life" stories, but Allen writes them in such a way where I don't get bored. I live real life, so I don't want to read about it. However, Allen's writing of "real life" characters is so intriguing as to make me want to see their lives to the end of the story. I have always been a fan of role reversals and cross- Gregory Allen has become a new favorite author of mine. I have always been a fan of role reversals and cross-genre anything. To read about a "Mr. Mom" character who reaches a crossroads in his life and has to figure out what to do with the rest of his life when his son starts school.

Books like these usually take the POV of a woman, so to see a man have to find answers to questions at this time of life, is refreshing. Not only does Zachary Kleinmann our Mr. Mom , have to figure out what to do with his life now that Sean, his son, has started school; Zachary also has to figure out what to do once he realizes Leah, his wife is having an affair.

Also, a new woman in his life, Ginger Charman, is trying to help Zachary figure out which "road to travel", while also dealing with demons of her own. Demons that threaten to make Zachary's life that much more complicated. Pubblica immagini fotografiche dal vivo concesse in utilizzo da fotografi dei quali viene riportato il copyright.

Hai dimenticato la password? I think this is her best romantic comedy yet. She keeps getting better with each book. The antics of a naughty parrot will make you chuckle out loud.

You'll find flaming femmes, a strong silent butch and feisty old broads. There's suspense and carefully concealed mystery alongside a romance that is tender and genuine. An addiction to suspense and mystery had me reading till I fell asleep and reaching for my kindle first thing in the morning. In fact, I was a little late for work I had to know how it all ended!

I won't tell Cool Side of the Pillow has a little bit of everything. I won't tell you though, you'll have to read it for yourself. Wow - It's been a busy couple of weeks. I've been trying to get back here to finish this review as there was more I wanted to say. I decided I needed a second read to get my thoughts together and what a nice way it was to spend my Sunday morning. We all know the phrase 'don't judge a book by it's cover' and we know that this applies to people as well as novels.

The promo descriptions of Cool Side of the Pillow were, for me, nothing like the story I found. The actual book was much better than I expected. Clara finds the same to be true of people she judges too quickly and maybe too harshly. Not only does she recognize her error, she forgives herself and moves on. It's a beautiful thing.

One of my favorite parts of Cool Side of the Pillow deals with the older women who are friends and relatives of the main characters. Most of my real-life heroes are women who had a major impact on my life while they were in their 80's and 90's. Women of that age group are often overlooked today and I think that is a damn shame. These women have fought battles we can't even begin to imagine and they'll teach us how to win our own if we just listen. Clara our strong silent butch handles these feisty old gals with irreverence and irritation balanced with an underlying love and respect.

The way they all banter back and forth is great! I hope that readers will take these characters to heart and have the opportunity for spunky and rewarding relationships with their own versions of Esme and Temperance.

Aug 27, lov2laf rated it liked it Shelves: I found this one to be a little above average but not as good as some of her other works. Something about this felt a little choppy or underdeveloped but there's still some good content here and a decent story. Clara's character comes across as depressed and guarded which makes her hard to warm up to though she's relatable. Bebe was a really interesting protago 3. Bebe was a really interesting protagonist because she was unconventional.

She's clumsy, multi-layered, and has a curvy figure ie, not thin. She's also pretty lovable. I always appreciate an interesting lead. Despite the theme of death throughout, there's some good humor and there's a sweet element to the story, mainly brought in by Bebe. Aug 26, Alena rated it liked it Shelves: I've really come to like McKnight's comic voice. Here she used it to describe small town life with a twist, the main character, manager of the family-owned funeral home, can see ghosts and interact with them.

Mainly when the people have just died, but some stick around for longer.
