Love and War 4: A Gangsta's Last Ride by Latoya Nicole

Well, I liked it. The ride was not entirely unpleasant but it was not the best either. Good thing though, I could not put down the book. It's easy to read. The grammar was correct even if I found some phrasings odd. But I am a foreigner so I probably can't judge that well. I was in a sudden need for a good modern romance fix and with some modifications it could have been memorable.

The premises was good but the author shy'd away from it being a good book who asked interesting questions. I don't know why authors don't go for it sometimes. They have a plot in their heads but they just fall timidly into conventions and it reads like a pamphlet book sold in a train station.

It could have worked better.

  • variations in prose: collective short stories and a novella.
  • Love and War 4: A Gangsta's Last Ride.
  • Wherever He Leads.
  • Wheres My Fecking Flip Flop (Brits Abroad Book 4).

I mean the leading lady in this novel is a nice, down-to-earth, seemingly smart, nerdy, professionnal, grounded, pretty, black woman. At least she is supposed to be all theses things. Yet she is unlucky in love. She meets "Mitch" who is also very unlucky in love and in the span of a couple of weeks they fall in love. Unfortunately for us, the author thinks it's cute listening to her heroine constant ranting.

Latoya spent most of the novel ranting about her weight, her skin color, and her hair and I felt frustrated to no end. It is so damn difficult to find a good black female character in urban litterature I was disappointed that she had to be phony and her friends "Real housewives of Atlanta" types of "bitches". I mean if only the author did not cheat her way through the book it could have been a great read. It could have been "something new" material. But the girl is a size 14! In what universe, a size 14 is considered overweight and not date worthy?

I mean I don't live in that universe with my size Because from where I stand "bitches with a size 14 gets laid. What is wrong with her? She was being so immature by moments.

WHAT HAPPENED TO MY EYE?

Too fully appreciate the story, I imagined that she was more of a size 22 than a size I also imagined that she had "Octavia Spencer" kind of quirky beauty. That is how I manage to make the plot credible. I had doubts a man like Mitch would listen to her prattle. The things she said sometimes was quite offending in their ignorance. I mean she bashed her friends for being sex-driven one-night stand magnet and then they're conveniently jealous of her when she got herself a man.

  • Adela A New Fairy Tale;

She always belittled herself to the point of it being ridiculous. She bashed the weave-wearing Deana. She bashed the seemingly annoying Angela. She goes out with them and they're conveniently not that good to her anyway. What is the point of this friendship? It sounds very Tyler Perry-ish. Also, what is wrong with the racism and the colorism stereotypical talk? There was no real interoggation. There was only statements from the main character.

The girl was convinced her friends pitied her and at the end of the book we realized it is conveniently true. The author never addressed the weird social views or the self-esteem issues she might have in an intelligent manner. I also did not like that Mitch's wife was black. It seems too easy. He even go as far as saying he should be allowed to love what he loves. But it could have made much more of an impact if his first wife had been any color in the sun but black. Because only a man who is already into "swirl" would be into her.

See a Problem?

Also did she need to meet an african american partner also a woman to feel entitled to stay in her position towards Angela. The man bloody well worked his ass off. There was no doubt in my mind he probably deserve his promotion. That was ridiculous and uneeded. She lives in the US. I'd understand if she lived in my island where some places still act backwards with white people being your boss and their children also being your boss because it is how it worked.

But it was nothing like that. I happened to like her relationship with Zach and I'd have been happy to read more about it. I like that he had a bit of spunk in him. He was a cute kid. What happened to the illegitimate baby plot? Will Mitch be paying alimony for the other kid we never saw or discussed? I liked Mitch to some levels. He was attractive but although his complicated lovelife was quite a turn off but it was one of the rare things that worked well in the book. Overall the plot felt rushed and his pov sometimes not really realistic. I was surprised with their love scene because it was not what I imagined.

It could have been so much better was what I thought when I read the last sentence of this book. It could have been so much better. Chances are if you pick up this book, you will read it and then put it down and think exactly the same. It is not a bad book but it could have better. Aug 27, Pesky rated it really liked it. I have been reading romances for most of my life at this point. Even having taken some lengthy hiatuses from the genre, I always end up coming back to it. Going from the classic 80s purple prose style, through a long infatuation with regency era novels and then into a n often unfortunate bout with contemporaries, one key factor always persisted.

That was, that the heroines of every single novel I read, were always always white. I think it's honestly a tragedy that I, being dark skinned and broa I have been reading romances for most of my life at this point. I think it's honestly a tragedy that I, being dark skinned and broad featured, have spent a lifetime reading beautiful love stories crafted exclusively for women who do not resemble me. I believe fervently in representation, and that belief extends beyond just on-screen works. I want to read books that feature a diverse cast of characters and not, as is often the case, just as mostly irrelevant accessories to the main white characters' stories.

Searching for this kind of novel is a bit tricky, and I came across a great many that guaranteed disappointment before stumbling across this one. Truthfully, I expected this book to be a double whammy of offense. Right before venturing into "African-American romances" I went on a disappointing stint reading romances centered around BBWs. When handled poorly, BBW romances are sad affairs at best and I couldn't see how adding race to the mix could help. The Ugly Girlfriend gave me a really great surprise.

The story flowed simply and believably. The relationship was completely grounded in reality while still maintaining that element of fantasy that makes romance novels such a great escape. Nelson didn't take the easy way out by making the hero some moneyed alpha male in a suit, but took pains to humanize him. Despite his obvious and immense physical attributes, Mitch wasn't the shallow construction of a perfect man that I've often run across in romance novels. The novel is short so of course nobody's character is as fully fleshed out as could be, but for the length I think she did a great job.

LaToya is hardworking, serious, and unabashed about her insecurities. She knows who she is and why she does the things she does and she communicates with Mitch once they get into it with each other. While not at all contributing to the usual drama one expects in some romances, I thought that this attitude went well with the characters and made for a great read. This novel was less about contrived drama and more about a real way one man and one woman came together and fell for each other. Even without convoluted plot and infuriating misunderstandings, The Ugly Girlfriend still managed to be interesting.

It is very well worth the read. Apr 05, Darla rated it liked it. I felt I could almost understand what our heroine, LaToya was dealing with, but I will never understand, how she got the title "the ugly girlfriend" and why the hell she didn't put a stop to it when it started. Well at least I don't, all my homies are sexy bitches!!!! Mitch needed Toya's support due to his ugly divorce and trying to repair his life and heal his son. Sweet story about beauty being in the eye of the beholder, but more importantly, its about being happy with the way you are, and accepting yourself for you, and being confident in yourself and not letting other folks dictate to you what and where THEY think you should be or what you can get!!!

I loved that LaToya finally figured out that she was fine just the way she was, extra pounds and stretch marks and all, and that she deserved to be and feel sexy and desired just like her "skinny" friends were too!!! I loved when they went to the party and her supposed to be home-girl was there, and they found out that one of the founding partners for the company was a dark, dark skinned woman!!! You will just have to read the book to understand what I'm talking about there wink!

In any case, enjoyable enough read, enough so that I will be checking out the next book in this Lonely Heart series. May 07, M.
