This manga only gets better and better as you read it. Another character that becomes a focal point of our group joins in this one, and then we get the biggest challenge that Kenshin has yet faced: Jin-e, a man who was also a monster of the revolutionary war ten years ago.

Everything from the story we left off in the last volume with involving Sagara Sanosuke is well worth the read, and his power and backstory is one that'll affect a great many people.

But the one that takes the cake is undoubtedly Jin-e. He presents the first real threat to Kenshin and to those around him, and while his reputation alone is formidable, the way he meets Kenshin at the crossroads is even more intense and frightening. The levels of corruption that we had seen in the previous volume only increase with Jin-e's appearance as well. It is through him that the extent of the crude, merciless era that Japan has now fallen into is truly starting to unfold before our eyes, and it manifests itself in Jin-e's appearance like a prodigy.

Though things get worse here, it's why this volume becomes so much the better to read. It reveals a new, darker side of Kenshin we didn't get to know before, and it makes who he is that much more shocking. Keep reading this one, guys. Nov 17, Jen rated it liked it Shelves: When fighting is your life, loyalty to those lost ideals and to the man who most symbolized them may be the one thing left. But Megumi's life is at stake, and however sympathetic Kenshin may feel, he will fight on, to the last man if necessary May 22, Dani - Perspective of a Writer rated it it was amazing Shelves: This volume was way better than the first!

I love the quick transition from Zanza to Kurogasa. Also that its all about the war from 10 years ago. For the most part I enjoyed how the fight scenes were drawn. The art overcomes the time period it was drawn in unlike DNAngel. While we go from fight to fight I like that this has a genuine story there and all the character are coming from different POVs. Mejora bastante con respecto al primer tomo sobre todo la pelea contra Jin-E.

This was a fun book to read considering I like this kinda stuff. The characters are well designed in this and are given good personalitys. Mar 20, Gabriela rated it really liked it. This is a guilty pleasure re-read of the series alongside my regular GR challenge. I've loved Rurouni Kenshin since I was a kid, and it makes me happy to dive back into this series. The story of Rurouni Kenshin continues in volume two of the eponymous series. Here Kenshin, living his quiet life at his new home with Kaoru and her recently acquired student, is dragged into new adventures when the enemy from the first volume returns with the the desire to kill Kenshin, as he is the only real obstacle to him succeeding in his goals against Kaoru.

To this end, they hire who they think is a common thug named Sanosuke, and send him to kill Kenshin. The thug makes it clear he won't The story of Rurouni Kenshin continues in volume two of the eponymous series. The thug makes it clear he won't kill Kenshin if he can avoid it. He simply wants to fight him for personal reasons. Despite Sanosuke's honor, the men he is working for are truly evil, and intend for him to die injuring Kenshin badly enough for them to kill him.

The other story in the volume is that of Kenshin forced by another Hitokiri into a match to the death. The other man, Jin-E, wishes to push Himura into a corner so that he will have to actually fight to kill. In a perverse way, this creep feels that it is a victory for himself if Kenshin is forced to do what he has decided not to do, i.

Only Kaoru can prevent Kenshin from this path and save him.

This is the volume where things get even more interesting. Some interesting questions are raised. How far does one go in the vow to not fight if one can avoid it, and to do anything but kill? How far can one really take these vows in a dangerous world? If one must kill, can it be done morally? These are the questions presented by our Rurouni's adventures in this collection of stories. Through it all, Kenshin retains his morality. And this is not just when Kaoru saves him from going too far.

He had worked out how to do what is necessary without abandoning his general principles, even were he to be forced to violate them to some extent. This is not me being weirdly contradictory, as it works in the story exactly as I just described.

Rurouni Kenshin - Hitokiri Battousai

In other words, Himura had worked out how his moral ideals functioned in a dangerous world. I think that, beyond the exciting adventures and continued from the first volume character bios and author commentary, that this is the best part of this volume of the Rurouni Kenshin manga. We can take a lesson here. To not break emotionally, and not descend into a moral abyss, we must work out how we deal with the world if we must do things we don't like or find morally objectionable.

Those few times when it is necessary and even right to do such deeds, how do we do so? In real life, this can be anything, not just fighting or other martial matters. But a moral foundation, I would argue best based upon God's Word, is a must. In other words, we must think things over, so we are ready for every contingency. Once again, a terrific job by Watsuki. Mar 01, Ridvan rated it it was amazing. A huge fan of the series after watching it when I was a kid, ah the memories watching it together with my brothers, damn why'd we have to get old?

Nov 05, Jess Neuner rated it really liked it Shelves: So Team Kenshin has officially picked up another member: Sanosuke, a former street fighter who is now a 'fighting enthusiast'. Which doesn't pay like street fighting did, so he's over at Kaoru's dojo mooching off of her for free food, like Kenshin and Yahiko already do.

He complains about Kaoru's cooking, but she rightfully points out that he hasn't got to eat it and if he doesn't like it, he can leave. It being free apparently overrides the bad taste, as he and the others have no problem cont So Team Kenshin has officially picked up another member: It being free apparently overrides the bad taste, as he and the others have no problem continuing to eat her cooking.

The chief of police pays Kenshin a visit to apologise for the sword-bearing police having attacked him a few weeks ago. He probably wouldn't have bothered if he hadn't wanted something from Kenshin, as he immediately asked Kenshin to protect an Ishin Shishi political activist from the Meiji Restoration from a hitokiri legendary swordsman.

Kenshin himself was actually both of these things. I like how much this manga is based in real history. Kenshin may not have been a real person, but the Meiji Restoration absolutely was and it's interesting to see how both Kenshin and the country of Japan were so shaped by that event and are both trying to figure out what they're meant to be in the new era. There's a rather violent past underneath the 'civilised' exterior and both will have to deal with that at some point.

Kaoru does have to get rescued again. Hopefully this will not be a regular thing. She's a capable fighter, she just keeps running into people who are more experienced and stronger than her. Only Kenshin would be a match for another hitokiri, so it's understandable that she wasn't going to win that fight, but I do hope she's given a bit more to do.

She's got the skills, it would be nice to see her able to use them. I also liked that we get to see how Kenshin was before his ten-year stint as a wandering samurai. He's pushed to battousai 'killer' mode in order to protect others and it was rather cool to see exactly what he's been trying to avoid for ten years. Fortunately, Kaoru seems to be able to get him to snap out of it, or they might have a bit of a problem Jun 28, Christina rated it liked it Shelves: Sanosuke's past drives him to keep fighting, and to wipe out the last patriot, whom he believes to be Himura but Himura is the wrong target even though he is a patriot.

And then, after the heart-wrenching battle, Himura runs into yet more trouble when Sanosuke takes him gambling, and a woman carrying opium is chased into the gambling room and is saved by him and Sanosuke!

But is this woman more trouble than she is worth? This was quite inspiring, I only wish that I had read this when I was a bit younger. The morals in this manga would have sunk in a lot more. Also, this opium woman is quite suspicious Volume 1 is unique and awesome, yes, volume 2 is even more exciting and relevant to the story, yes. But does it have yet more unique qualities, no. He becomes Kenshin's best friend and fighting partner.

Jin-e encounters Kenshin and after seeing how weak he is compared to the Bakumatsu period, he decides to kill him. The next day, Kaoru, worried about Kenshin, goes to talk with him but she is kidnapped by Jin-e. Furious, Kenshin defeats Jin-e, but Kaoru pleads with him not to become an assassin again and Jin-e commits suicide. Sanosuke is angry at Megumi for producing opium because a friend of his died from an opium overdose, but Kenshin decides to protect her.

Sanosuke defeats Hyottoko, but Megumi is attacked by Beshimi. Yahiko tries to protect her but is hit by one of Beshmi's poison darts. It turns out Megumi is a doctor and she is able to save his life. She decides to leave the dojo rather than endanger anyone else, but Kenshin and Kaoru ask her to stay. She is taken prisoner and Kenshin and Yahiko decide to rescue her. Sanosuke is still angry at her but agrees to go along and they attack the mansion.

Although Aoshi succeeds in wounding Kenshin, he is defeated by him. Kenshin's group then finds Megumi, who thanks them for trying to save her. She then attempts to stab herself, but is prevented by Sanosuke, who catches the blade with his bare hand. He tells her he forgives her for the death of his friend, and Kenshin convinces her that the only way to atone for the deaths she caused is by using her skill as a doctor to help others.

Before leaving the mansion, they find Aoshi, shocked over his comrades' deaths, and Kenshin promises him another fight in the future in the hope that it will calm him. Tsunan is still haunted by the past and hatred of the Meiji government and wants to bomb the headquarters of the Meiji Government. Seeing that this would not be what their captain wanted, Sanosuke stops him with Kenshin's help. Meanwhile, Megumi runs into Kenshin, Kaoru, and Yahiko and returns to the dojo with them, where they find Sanosuke in critical condition. While Megumi is able to save Sano's life, it is three days and nights before he wakes up. He says goodbye to Kaoru and leaves without a word to the others. Zenpen " Act Furious that Kenshin broke his promise not to go wandering again without letting him know, Sanosuke decides to go to Kyoto to confront him.

Meanwhile, Megumi goes to see Kaoru, who is severely depressed at Kenshin's departure. She convinces Kaoru to go to Kyoto, giving her some medicine that Kenshin said was valuable for wounds, and Yahiko and Kaoru leave Tokyo. Kenshin allows Misao to accompany him, but avoids telling her what happened to Aoshi. While on their journey, Kenshin and Misao find a village that has been conquered by Shishio. They meet a boy from the village named Mishima Eiji whose family was slaughtered by Shishio's soldiers. After meeting Shishio, Kenshin is attacked by Shishio's soldier, Senkaku.

The fight ends in a tie with both of their swords broken and the village is freed. Kenshin wants him to make another reverse-blade sword, but he refuses because he hates violence. Hiko does not think that Kenshin is going to be able to learn the final technique of the Hiten Mitsurugi style because of his history as a hitokiri. Meanwhile, Misao meets Yahiko and Kaoru and takes them to meet Kenshin. Kaoru and Yahiko catch up with Kenshin at Hiko's home and he sends Kenshin out and questions them about his apprentice's life since he saw him last.

They tell him about Kenshin's vow not to kill and his struggles to redeem himself and atone for all the lives he has taken. Hiko decides to teach Kenshin the final technique after all and Kaoru, Yahiko, and Misao return to the Aoi-Ya to wait for him. Misao in her turn is upset to discover that all her friends are dead and Aoshi has had some kind of breakdown.

Meanwhile, Shishio meets Aoshi and offers him the opportunity to join forces. Aoshi is not interested in joining anyone, but he is willing to work with Shishio, since he wants to kill Kenshin. Aoshi leaves Okina badly injured and tells Misao he never wants to see her again. He also warns them of the power of the Juppongatana. Kenshin trains with Hiko, but finds himself unable to master the final technique. Hiko gives Kenshin one night to prepare, warning him that if he cannot find what is missing in himself, it will be his final duty as Kenshin's master to end his life.

He also discovers that the passing of this final technique usually costs the life of the master, but due to the reverse-blade sword, Hiko is only wounded and makes a full recovery. Learning that Shishio plans to burn Kyoto, Kenshin realizes that the fire is just a distraction. Shishio's real objective is to escape from Kyoto in his battleship, Rengoku, in order to attack the Meiji government.

Okina wants Kenshin to end Aoshi's life, but Kenshin believes there is still a chance to save him and promises Misao that he will bring him back. Sanosuke is shocked to find Anji there and volunteers to fight him to learn if he is really evil. During the course of a brutal fight, Anji tells Sano his history and why he joined Shishio.

He wants to save the world, but Sanosuke convinces him that his wish to destroy is not the way to achieve his goal. Although Sano is injured, he defeats Anji, who then warns them that the Aoi-Ya is under attack.
