I love their quirky personalities, their habit of finding new and interesting ways to create mischief, their sudden surprises and their infectious enthusiasm for life.

They have a high rate of chronic illnesses and cancers , including cancer of the lymph nodes, adrenal disease, pancreatic cancer and even heart disease. That being said, owning ferrets is incredibly rewarding, and these pets can offer many years of loyal, affectionate companionship. Cedar chips should actually not be used with any small animal, it causes respiratory issues. And litter training tends to be be difficult with ferrets. Biting tends to happen when a ferret is very young or blind. But ferrets are sweet and lovable little nutballs.

We have 5 and cherish each one. They make lovely pets for those who are willing to give them the care they need. As obligate carnivores you cannot just toss them Purina and walk off. Their foods tend to be pricey, and you have to be willing to deal with them stealing everything lol.

But also the not so positive too. Keeping an eye out is imperative!! Wks later I hear that the mailman had found a ferret and gave her to a family. Well I contacted the family and they had to think about giving her back. I obliged and got her back. She was different when she came back. She acted out and punished me for months and months. She lived the rest of her life w me.

They are always available for cuddle time! Most of them refuse to cuddle tooooo much energy! Also their coats are super amazing because I find them raw meat and high quality kibble. They are so soft!! They have them at pet stores, too. Wild ferrets are somewhat endangered, and don't make good pets. Ferrets are just weasels.

But if you pick them up by the nape of their neck, they instantly fall asleep. You'll change your mind as soon as you drop one of them into a box filled with packing peanuts. After you do that, they'll become less freaky and more funny. It must be some subconscious fear. I'm scared they'll shoot up my pant leg.

I just remember chatting with the woman who ran the ferret ranch where I would buy their food, and I asked her about the double - dot ear tattoos. All of my ferrets came from Marshall Farms. I just thought they were Canadian because they would be calm and polite one minute, and be rioting like drunken hockey fans the next. All of mine are Marshall's too. I would've preferred one from a private breeder, but there are exactly 0 ferret breeders in Arizona. You can adopt ferrets, in the weasel family, really easily.

The pet stores here sell them in the small animal sections, with bunnies and hamsters abs guinea pigs.

You do need to check if they are legal in your area. The biggest problem is that they smell. Even with constant cleaning. If you feed them high quality food especially raw meat , the smell really isnt an issue. You do have to scoop the litter box times daily. Bathing them too much actually makes the smell stronger. I guess a ferret would know. I've never had them myself, I have snakes, so keeping rodents and rodent like things is bad.

It wasn't an issue although I was kind of a shitty snake owner: Most people feed ferrets shitty food: My corn snake is food-aggressive, and when I had anther snake that only ate live, he would go crazy whenever it was in the room. Weasel's are wild animals. They're not domesticated, so they wouldn't make for great pets. Even if you were still able to find an adoptable weasel, you will very likely need a permit to own it. That is why it's so difficult for you to find them for adoption.

You can, of course, get a ferret, which is in the weasel family. However, you should know before getting a ferret again, check your location to be sure they're even legal for you to have , that they are VERY high maintenance. The room you release them in will have to be ferret-proofed. Ferrets can squeeze their bodies through very small openings.

They LOVE to chew on things made of rubber or plastic, which can damage their digestive system. They steal things and hide them one of mine once stole my boyfriend's wallet and hid it behind a dresser. We didn't find it until we moved 3 months later. Even if you do clean it daily, there will still be some ferret stink.

Oh, and they poop A LOT. Usually within 5 minutes of waking up, eating, or drinking, and they eat, sleep, and drink many, MANY times a day. Typically, it's best to get 2 ferrets at a time, because they are very social and they do get lonely.
