Googe managed to attend rehearsals, which were centred around her day job. Rehearsal sessions were regularly held at Salem Studios, which was connected to the independent record label Fever Records. In March , during the tour with The Soup Dragons, David Conway announced his decision to leave the band, due to a gastric illness, disillusionment with music and ambitions to become a writer. The audition process, which Shields described as "disastrous and excruciating", was unsuccessful due to Shields "mentioning The Smiths , because [he] liked their melodies", which attracted a number of vocalists he referred to as "fruitballs".
Byfield was deemed unsuited as a vocalist and the band recruited Butcher. At her audition for the band, she sang " The Bargain Store ", a song from Dolly Parton 's album of the same name. In light of Butcher's recruitment, Shields became a co-lead vocalist, splitting and often sharing duties alongside Butcher. Commenting on the transition, Shields noted that Butcher "sounded all right and she could sing one of our songs, we just had to show her how to play guitar. Under pressure from Lazy Records to release a full-length album, My Bloody Valentine compromised and agreed to release a single and subsequent mini album, citing the need for time to stabilize their new line-up.
Both received moderate critical acclaim, and peaked at number 13 and 12 on the independent singles and albums chart, respectively.

It peaked at number 24 on the UK Albums Chart [34] but failed to chart elsewhere internationally. McGee dropped My Bloody Valentine from Creation Records soon after the release of Loveless , due to the album's extensive recording period and interpersonal problems with Shields.
Several technical problems with the studio sent the band into "semi-meltdown", according to Shields, [37] who was rumoured to have been suffering from writer's block. Rumours had spread amongst fans that albums worth of material had been recorded and shelved prior to the band's break up. In , it was reported that Shields had delivered 60 hours of material to Island Records, [36] and Butcher confirmed that there existed "probably enough songs to fill two albums. Rumours of a My Bloody Valentine box set, which had circulated amongst the public in April following a listing on HMV Japan 's web site, [59] began recirculating. In March , after a number of reported delays, Sony Music Ireland announced the release of the compilation album EP's — —a collection of the band's Creation Records extended plays, singles and unreleased tracks.
In November , Kevin Shields announced plans to release My Bloody Valentine's third album online before the end of the year. In , Shields announced plans to release a My Bloody Valentine EP "of all-new material", which would be followed by a fourth studio album. My Bloody Valentine's musical style progressed throughout their career. The band were originally influenced by post-punk acts such as The Birthday Party , The Cramps and Joy Division , and as author Mike McGonial noted, "brought together the least interesting elements" of their influences.
The band later took a "rarified, effete and poppy approach to Byrdsian rock" with their two successive releases, " Strawberry Wine " and Ecstasy The band were also formatively influenced by house music as well as hip hop , of which Shields said "it beats the shit out of most rock music when it comes to being experimental, it's been a constant source of inspiration to us.
One of the most recognisable aspects of My Bloody Valentine's music is Shields' guitar sound, which "use[s] texture more than technique to create vivid soundscapes. Shields used a number of alternate and open tunings [11] that together with his tremolo manipulation achieved "a strange warping effect that makes the music wander in and out of focus", according to Rolling Stone.
Together with the tremolo manipulation and distortion , he created a technique known as "glide guitar". During live performances, and in particular the closing song "You Made Me Realise", My Bloody Valentine perform an interlude of noise and excessive feedback, known as "the holocaust", which would last for half an hour and often reached db. The following year, Warden, dressed in a gas mask and mining suit, goes on a murderous rampage. He murders multiple partying teenagers in the mine, but Tom, girlfriend Sarah, and friends Axel and his girlfriend Irene survive the ordeal. Ten years later, in , Tom inherits the mine after his father's death and returns to Harmony after a decade-long disappearance.

The masked killer then murders Irene and the hotel manager. Axel arrives at the crime scene and finds Irene's body with her heart missing; Tom becomes a suspect. At the police station, Axel receives an anonymous heart-shaped box with Irene's heart in it. The next day, Tom has an encounter with the killer at the mine. James Burke, the former sheriff, confesses to Tom that he, Tom's father, and Ben Foley, a local politician, killed and buried Warden after his murder spree, and had the crime covered up by the local police.
To prove it, he takes Tom to the site where Warden was buried, but they find an empty grave.

Ben is murdered by Warden, and discovered in Warden's grave with his heart missing. Sarah and Megan are attacked by the killer, and Megan is murdered; Axel and Sarah discover her body with its heart missing, and the phrase "Be Mine 4 Ever" scrawled in blood. Sarah tells Axel she is aware of his infidelity. The killer later infiltrates the Palmer house, killing their babysitter, Rosa, and Burke.
Sarah leaves with Tom; Axel, convinced Tom is the killer, calls to warn Sarah, saying that Tom has been institutionalized for the last seven years. Alarmed, Sarah makes the car crash and flees into the woods. She hides in Axel's father's abandoned house and discovers empty heart-shaped boxes, and a high school photo of her with Tom. She runs into a mine and is confronted by Axel and Tom. Wresting Axel's gun from him, she holds them both at gunpoint. Tom confirms he is the killer. In the midst of a hallucination , Tom, who has developed an alternate personality as Harry Warden, sees Warden appear behind Sarah.
Axel attacks Tom, but is injured in the scuffle. Sarah and Axel flee into a tunnel. Sarah manages to shoot Tom in the side, hitting a fuel tank that results in an explosion.
