Even if you are a fan of what our Indian mythologies or stories have to tell us or if you are not a fan of this, I must admit this is a book that each one of us should read. It not only brought to shine some of the most important aspects of our history of Mahabharata, the aspects we never knew existed. The aspects from the perspective of Yudhishthra and the facts we may have forgotten, this book will bring you back to earth and question the basics of why we are doing what we are doing.

Mallar Chatterjee has beautifully presented a great epic from Yudhisthira's point of view. This book is a must read for all. The writing style, choice of words, order in which the events are told - I loved all. The book creates a magic which transports you to the era of Mahabharata and you can feel, understand and observe things from Yudhisthira's point of view- his greatness, his insecurities, his life.

His introspections are sometimes filled with anger, sometimes wonder, and sometimes guilt, but always evoke a sense of sympathy in the reader. The questions that the book leaves you with are enough to want to put the book aside and reflect on the answers if there are any. This one was easily one of my best and most fulfilling reads. I often read the same bits over and over again, reflecting on what I had read, and in the process, absorbing fully the many snippets of wisdom and savouring the many layers it unveils without the inquisitiveness of what happens next gnawing at me.

The prostaginust had never roused any warmth in me, not ever! And I wouldn't want to live in Murica either.

This is very short, so if you normally don't like short stories, or you want a book that lasts for days, you won't be happy here. Dec 03, Jean rated it really liked it Shelves: Both were excellent - The Last Job is classic Lilith Saintcrow, and Unfallen is a teasing glimpse into a fascinating world and characters. One that ends a bit abruptly. I would like to read a longer story like Unfallen. For the price I would have liked a longer read, but I am satisfied with the stories I got.

Can't really go wrong with Saintcrow. Unfallen 0 Stars - Can't stand religion bashing. Beside that the characters were flat and story had not heart. My mind kept trying to wander from the story. The last job 4 star - I really liked this. Wouldn't even mind a series to follow. Very, very, very short. Loses a star for a lack of character development. Aug 12, Sara rated it really liked it Shelves: I quite liked this.

Frequently bought together

The first story, in my opinion, was far superior to the second. It didn't have the grab you by the balls factor the distopian YA did. Oct 05, Jagged rated it liked it. I think Unfallen should have been more than a short story. I was enjoying it. The last job was good enough as a short story for me though, I at least felt satisfied after reading it, unlike with Unfallen. Aug 17, Brielle rated it it was ok. They were really too short to allow me to appreciate my favourite thing about Lilith Saintcrow, which is the worldbuilding.

She could make them turn into something amazing. But right now, they're not. Apr 08, Lasciel rated it liked it Shelves: I think I counted 2 and a bit stories in here and honestly they didn't make much of an impression. The teaser of a novel at the end was longer than the other stories, or at least it felt it. Feb 22, Kelly Martin rated it it was ok. I hate ambigious endings. The second short story was OK, but the first one just stopped. Mar 27, Kristy rated it did not like it.

Unfallen Dead

As much as like this writer I didn't care for these two short stories. I enjoyed both short stories. I loved the both enough that I would love to see them develop into full novels. Nov 06, Lauren rated it it was amazing Shelves: Valdes rated it it was ok Mar 13, It's not a perfect place, and there are troubles.

Another young girl, a daughter of Adam, Ava is tempted a lead out of the garden. She is given the task to help the other people of the world realize the mistakes they are making, yet she is so innocent she has no idea what she is doing. Entwined in it all is love and hope, is evil and corruption and in the end, what will be the course of the world. The Queendom of Evlantis at first reads like a great feminist novel.

Women rule the world, they keep the men under their boots, but as you go along you realize that this is not the way the world was meant to be and that it is not working out well for these people. There are major problems. Although the author, Juliet Y. Mark never comes out and specifically says that this is the retelling of Adam and Eve, you get enough hints along the way to realize it and to understand the purpose and reason behind the retelling. I found the story compelling and well written. It pulled me along all throughout wanting me to know more and to find the answers, to only realize that there is still more to learn even after the book ends.

It is a wonderful read for men and women alike, as well and adults and teens. Sep 28, Cunningham Thomson rated it it was amazing. What a wonderful read All the twists and turns; murders, schemings and conspiracies abounding with new characters dropped in to spice things up. Look out for the fast paced drama, romance, and plots and subterfuge which will leave you wanting more!!!!!!!!! I cannot wait to get a hold of book 2 Sephora's Revenge involving the evil Queen!!!!! I love the premise of this book! Mark creates an entirely imaginary ancient society run by women who are strong, smart, hilarious, competitive, scheming—and who sometimes discover that their plans trip them up when they least expect it.

The men in their world play an interesting role, and as the women realize that they need the men as much as the men need them, hilarity and catfights ensue. I had the joy and privilege of editing and publishing this n I love the premise of this book! I had the joy and privilege of editing and publishing this novel, and I loved it from beginning to end. Whether you buy the print book or click through the pages of the ebook, and you will not be able to put it down once you immerse yourself in the Queendom of Evlantis. As the intrigue among the queens escalates, a few choice men shake the very foundation of this estrogen-empowered society.

Aug 14, Ira Therebel rated it liked it Shelves: This story takes place in an ancient city where women dominate and men are their slaves. Combined with it is also a bit changed story of Adam and Eve. I really liked the original idea of how a different creation story resulted in matriarchy. The author also does a great job in showing us different details of this society and also how this dominance still brings problems to women. What I did not like were some parts which felt too far fetched and unbelievable. Of course it is a fantasy book, but s This story takes place in an ancient city where women dominate and men are their slaves.

Of course it is a fantasy book, but some things should be convincing. My main problem was the Rebekkah and Ava situation. I don't want to make spoilers so I will just say that I couldn't buy it.

What I also didn't like was the writing style. It feels to simplistic. Like the author just tells us all the stories through the characters dialogue in a very direct way instead of making it a bit more exciting. Still I am now interesting in the series. The first book was kind of predictable, but now after reading the ending I wonder how it will go on and would read the second book.

Oct 10, Chris rated it really liked it Shelves: This is a book about a civilisation, where the women hold all the power and the men are enslaved. Things don't really start to get going until the election of High Queen, at which point all the scheming and backstabbing kicks off, and this reaches boiling point when the outsider is discovered. Without making this a spoiler review that's about all I can say!

I recei This is a book about a civilisation, where the women hold all the power and the men are enslaved.

I received a free copy of this book through Goodreads Giveaways. Dec 15, Lauren Bujorian rated it it was amazing. I'm almost done with this book and I find myself avoiding it to keep myself from finishing it. The story starts out a little on the slow side as all the characters are introduced and you can establish an understanding of the world in the book, but once everyone is introduced the story gets so easy to follow. The book is definitely a quick read.

If you want to read a story about strong and independent women then this is the book for you. I can't wait to read the second one in the series! If you are looking for a unique fantasy book, and one that holds your interest with great characters and good plot lines, then try Unfallen! It was refreshing to read a book with strong and intelligent female heroines. Unfallen is fast paced and suspenseful, and reminded me of The Hunger Games with characters you will root for and want to read more about. I couldn't put it down and can't wait for the next book.

Juliet Mark offers a unique take on the age old story of Adam and Eve. Some of the author's efforts at emphasizing the dominance of women in the society of Evlantis were cumbersome and not always believable. Overall, however, I enjoyed the story and am looking forward to reading her next book to find out what happens! An alternative rendering of the Garden of Eden story, this takes place in a land where women are in charge and men are slaves.

It is a tale of good and evil, of love and hate, passion, greed and revenge.
