The Black Magician series. There is no foul language that I can remember and though it does have violence and death it is not graphic. If I do have a complaint is that the hero of a story has to defend his life by taking another's life yeah he does not dwell upon it too much. It does feel as if this part is glossed over. This book is fantastic. I love, love, love this book.
I love how Taran Matharu weaved such a complex, interesting, and creative world in the Dragon Rider Chronicles. I also liked all the diffrent demons and spells used by the summoners which includes, a Mite, a Salamander, a Golem, a Hydra, a force field, fire ball, kenetic ball, lightning, and telekenisis. Another thing that I apreciated about Novice is the relationship between the nobles and commoners. I enjoyed how people who are so similar to each other and who live right next to each other can hate each other so much.
Overall, I love, love, love this fun, exciting, creative, complex, fantastic book. One person found this helpful. First book in a long time where I could not put it down. In less than 24 hours of receiving I am a little over half way through the book, And to put it lightly this book is - easy.
I mean this as in the writing is so fluid and following it and understanding the story, the emotions, and the details is easy. I love the character, Fletcher is a true delight to know.
He sees the world as i would in the movies and stories I see. Fletcher is patient, understanding, unbiased, confident and modest. One could say he is Gary Stu perfect with him catching on to his powers quickly and just happening on a powerful creature. However I like the way Matharu handles this, I see it more as a reward for being kind, open and friendly to others and trying to be helpful. I feel this read is a very good balance between the Percy jackson series and The Inheritance cycle the eragon books Its not too playful like Percy Jackson and its not too over bearing and complicated like Eragon.
I very much look forward to finishing the book and will be picking up the next two. The main character is not unable to As a bit of an avid reader of the Fantasy and Science Fiction genre, this was an enjoyable read to me. It was interesting, it hooked you in fairly early on, and the characters are pretty likable. The main character is not unable to fail, and I enjoy that.
The Novice
The plot progression is good and if you enjoyed the first one, you'll very likely enjoy the other two. Also, this was well edited, I found no errors in it, which I appreciated. Interesting story about a boy with unknown origins brought up by the blacksmith of a village bordering the elf territory. The story takes off when an encounter with a solider ends in tragedy and our protagonist, Fletcher, must flee.
And although he leaves his old life behind, a new one begins by way of a gift from the soldier. This is a good story for anyone who likes high fantasy, likeable characters facing hard and sometimes unfair circumstances, and great world building. Overall I enjoyed this tale and will begin the next one. See all reviews.

The Novice : Taran Matharu :
Seraph and Atlas arrive with their new demons. The group of commoners and Othello decide to travel to Corcillum in the afternoon.
Fletcher goes with Othello to the Dwarven Quarter while the rest go to a perfumery. There, Fletcher meets Othello's family and Athol once again. Fletcher proves to Uhtred, Othello's father, that he is able to work as a blacksmith.

As they leave and head towards Valentius Square, they come across a big crowd. A man called Grindle shows up on a platform dragging Sylva, who was blindfolded. They save her, and make a run for it back to Vocans as all the carriages had left.

Ignatius attacked some men and burnt Grindle. When they finally make it out, they walked for 2 hours before taking refuge in a shed. They arrive back at Vocans in the morning and made it in time for Lovett's lesson. In which Fletcher replies it was a long story and he would tell him later. Tarquin and Isadora seem surprised at the fact that Sylva made it through the night to have made it back to Vocans academy. The lesson then starts as Lovett begins speaking.
Because the nobles already know infusion Lovett separates the nobles so they can practice and she can teach the Commoners. Sylva demonstrates with her demon and Fletcher tries and, for the first time has his demon infused within him. Lovett then demonstrates how to use a healing spell on Sylva and Othello as they had been injured during there fight. At the end of the lesson Lovett says she must get them prepared so they can begin to enter the ether.
The next lesson is demonology with Major Goodwin when Fletcher disappoints him because of his lack of knowledge on demons. Even the nobles are not able to impress Major Goodwin. During lunch Fletcher is called to Scipios office and turns in Baker's diary to the librarian. Fletcher sizes up his friends compared to the nobles when Lovett has a huge stone brought in to the center of the room. Lovett creates a bond between the stone and her mite so the students can see through the mites eyes. Lovett then creates a portal and sends the mite through so the students can see what the ether looks like.
Unfortunately the mite gets attacked by a bird like demon called a shrike and Lovett is forced to go through the portal to retrieve her mite. She puts on a Protective suit as the ethers air is poison to humans.
