Social Work Theories and Methods

Social work theories are general explanations that are supported by evidence obtained through the scientific method. A theory may explain human behavior, for example, by describing how humans interact or how humans react to certain stimuli. Social work practice models describe how social workers can implement theories.

Practice models provide social workers with a blueprint of how to help others based on the underlying social work theory. While a theory explains why something happens, a practice model shows how to use a theory to create change. There are many social work theories that guide social work practice.

Much of his work is on the borders of research and practice, and sociology and social work, and is often informed by an interest in qualitative methodology. She has researched and written about social work practice from a number of perspectives and is co author of Social Work Practice, a textbook for social work.

In all her work, she has explored the relationship between feminism and social work practice and research. An extended account of her analysis, which informs the chapter in this text, can be found in Gender and Community Care: Social work and social care perspectives Palgrave Macmillan She has worked in a range of community, political and academic settings, and has contributed to research on eviction, homelessness and anti-poverty activism, and educational texts on social welfare, social work and social theory.

Prior to this, she was a lecturer in sociology at Sheffield Hallam University.
