And it left me wondering how anyone found her attractive. The other thing that pissed me off royally was that she got up in arms over Koen kissing someone else. But nothing was done about the fact that she was also kissing someone else at the same time.
But I would say her transgression was actually worse. She was making out with someone Koen considered family. That's just wrong on so many levels. And the bitch had no shame. Koen kissed miss Katya to get her disqualified on purpose--of course not that she knows that. But who did she think she was getting all pissed off when she was doing the exact same thing? But this was never addressed. The only thing addressed was him--more than once. I am wondering if the suppression of women and the emasculating of men in this book is a reflection of a deep rooted issue that Penelope has with men?
Aside from that, the book wasn't too bad. Although I would consider it the Dragon version of the Hunger Games. I'll probably read the next one. May 20, Christie rated it really liked it. Always so full of detail. Koen, my biggest fear is for him and not marina. Daniil, i love the helping friend he is! Jan 12, Nicole rated it liked it. I can usually ignore small typos but the errors in this book were distracting! I got the book for free so I know I must sound ungrateful, but it's frustrating! What a shame too because I really got into Marina's story. All in all, I'm ready to find out how Marina fares in her quests and I have a feeling she'll become Jul 11, Rasa Ievkalne rated it did not like it.
I chose to read "Smolder" after I had red "Venomous". I loved the authors voice and style and hoped for another breathtaking journey.
Dark Souls: The Age of Fire
I know it is unfair to compare two different stories but that is the way I usually choose my next read. I like a book-not read next of authors work. I got plunged in a story that is nothing alike "Venomous". They are so different in writing style that if I didn't know,I would have never guessed they are by the same author. The huge mammoth problem that nobo I chose to read "Smolder" after I had red "Venomous".
The huge mammoth problem that nobody can miss is an absolute lack of editing. Spelling and grammar mistakes are screaming. Think-every second sentences is misspelled. Author constantly can't decide the point of view she is writing from so even in the same sentences it can switch from the third person telling story to the first persons point of view. It is confusing at best and takes several tries to sometimes understand the meaning. Author forgets the people participating in dialogue and switches them around unceremoniously.
Daniil becomes Nikolai in the middle of dialogue and then switches back. Have nobody, not even author herself reread the story before releasing it to public?
As for the heroes. I understand the image Penelope was trying and so miserably failed to create. So we are left with selfish, spontaneous, foolish, unreasonable, arrogant, rude and impossible to like heroine. She is like a puppet, jerked in different directions without any reason by her mad puppeteer.
Especially the beginning is confusing at best, there is no direction the story starts to unravel to,no,just mad jumble of words. Heroine left impression of being schizophrenic, to be honest. No normal working mind could follow her changes of hearts or reactions.
Hero is just cold, rude and impossible to crush on. She falls in love with an animal dragon in the first minutes after seeing him. And no,she does not falls in love with the man that turns into that dragon, she even resents him. Although she does not mind giving up her virginity in rather crude and unappealing sex scene only after few hours she had seen his human form and disliked it greatly. Its a huge WTF moment. The whole scene was just unbelievable and reminded me strongly of how a monkey would react. She fucks him-no foreplay,no arousal,no pain only after the fact it is mentioned she was virgin ,then throws some stones at his head and fucks again.
For curious ones-no,there is no reasoning behind throwing stones, just that she feels like it. Schizophrenic as I said. So after a day of finding out dragons and different dimension exists, she is so madly in love that she follows after our bad boy at the risk of her own life and ignores his rejection, decided that they are meant to be. It is so fucked up,it is not even funny. Not in a enjoyable and easy to read way but more like "Ahhhh,so that's what it's supposed to be about".
So by the end of the book and start of Aver, I really hope someone will kill Marina quickly. And get some editing ffs. Jul 19, Amanda rated it really liked it. Let me start off by saying I am a huge Penelope fan. Love her writing and her Rae Wilder Series. Since this one is not considered YA I was super excited to read it. Anyways on with the review Its a story about a girl who while confronted with a less than ordinary life, must learn to come to terms with and overcome panic attacks, and of late her mother's death.
If that isn't enough she stumbles upon not one, but three dragons hot, hot, and did Okay If that isn't enough she stumbles upon not one, but three dragons hot, hot, and did I say hot? Trekking to another dimension, finding out she's a princess, entering a battle to secure her position beside the dragon she loves, and meeting her long lost father Marina is a strong lead, who kicks ass and takes names.
I immediately fell in love with her snarky attitude and her no holds bar wit. On the downside there were several grammatical problems so it kind of took away from the story at some points because I had to reread parts to figure out what the mistake was. But, overall I think the story was wonderful and I will anxiously be awaiting the next in this series: Feb 18, Jennifer rated it it was amazing.
I've read all of Penelope's novels so far. And I am blown away, to a point fanatical She is an incredible writer. Please look past the grammatical errors. We can not all be perfect. I loved the Rae novels but as a writer, she has progressed in Smolder; this is by far her best novel yet. I love the characters. I laughed out loud, to the point my husband thinks I am legally insane and pretty sure he wants to confinscate my Nook , cried and want to kill some of the characters myself.
No, I will no give anything away. I can not wait until Burn 2 in the series. I told you I was semi Fanatical. It is a semi fast read. I can not say it more than you won't be diappoineted. Dec 13, Erica rated it really liked it. If you care at all about grammar and all that extra stuff don't read this, because you won't like it. Now if you don't really care like me, then you might slightly enjoy this. It's raw and new; doesn't really have that polished put together feel others have. I think that if the author had taken a little more time to work on this it would have flourished like a very pretty flower.
Characters just popped out of nowhere, but I can overlook that. I actually liked that. I liked it, it was good. Somet If you care at all about grammar and all that extra stuff don't read this, because you won't like it. Mar 17, Laura Kyahgirl rated it really liked it Shelves: Some of the plot development seemed too slow but the world building was interesting enough to make up for it.
My only complaint is it ended rather abruptly at, what I thought, was an inconvenient place in the story. The next book was supposed to be out a few months ago so hopefully it will be available soon. I an definitely interested in seeing how things go with Marina and Koen and the Aver! Jan 14, Coyora Dokusho rated it really liked it Shelves: Other than that, I enjoyed it! There were lots of cute and touching moments and I liked the characters.
Jul 10, Jamie Chung rated it liked it. I loved Marina-she was a really headstrong and kickass character. She no longer has control over her emotions and becomes an annoying ass whiny bitch. Not only does he have to deal with his newfound parenthood, his feelings for Rory and his position as Alpha, the government wa What is it About: Not only does he have to deal with his newfound parenthood, his feelings for Rory and his position as Alpha, the government wants to use his family and his abilities for their own nefarious plans. What I Liked and Didn't: I quite liked Rory, she came across as quite badass when she quits her job.
Plus, she managed to deal with her supernatural son for five years before even considering asking for help. It makes her both stubborn and a pretty cool woman. Cody was alright, he wasn't my favourite part of the book. I feel like he forgave Rory way too quickly considering he missed the first five years of his son's life. While I appreciate that he can have a tough career, a tough bear and still be sensitive, he just seemed a bit too sensitive that parts of his personality just didn't go together.
Plot-wise, it was a pretty dramatic read. The corrupt government is not particularly unique considering it's the same plot as a couple of books in the Saw Bear series. However, the unique part was using them as soldiers to kill any undesirables and blackmailing them into it by threatening their lives and their families. The ending was the most interesting part but I wish it had been drawn out a little bit longer, everything happened a bit too quickly. I didn't really care about the Kellers as much as I cared about the Ashe Crew.
The link was so thin that suddenly Bruiser has a family we'd never heard about through four books. But I suppose it did link into an interesting next book. Would I recommend it? On it's own, maybe not. But as a whole interlocking series between all the lumberjack crews and families, I'd say yeah. Will I be carrying on the series? A book about an arranged marriage between a dragon and bear, I'm there!
Sep 10, Megan rated it really liked it Shelves: I liked their chemistry and I also appreciated their history. I understand why she left and although wasn't fair should have had a go at him first. Nov 10, Kathy Wideman rated it it was amazing Shelves: This is the second series I have started by T. Joyce and the more books by her I read the more I love them. In this series they are also bear shifters but instead of lumberjacks they are firefighters.
This series mixes with the Saw Bears series. Rory Dodson had a one-night stand. That one-night stand gave her a son and her son is special. He has a little bear cub inside of him.

Maybe Cody will be able to help her. He wanted her for more than just that one night. Cody is the alpha of his crew and has enough on his shoulders as it is. Now Rory is back and he finds out that they have a son together. Now he has even more to protect than just his brothers, he has a family of his own. I loved this book so much.
It tugged at my heart string. Rory and Cody get a second chance at love and their son gets to experience what its like to be a real bear. This is the first book where you learn about the government using the shifters for different reasons. Not just studying them but making them do different things. I already have the rest of this series ready to read.
I highly recommend any book by T. Mar 15, Laura rated it it was amazing Shelves: Joyce book I ever read yeah, I got them out of order. That was before I regularly wrote reviews, so I'm writing one now that I've just re-read it. Rory is a terrific heroine. She's strong and scrappy.

Cody is a bear shifter, alpha of his crew, and a firefighter. He has a secret job too, something he does to keep his crew safe. The heat still lingers from their one-night stand all those years ago, but Cody isn't sure he can keep Rory and their cub safe. Terrific shifter romance, complete with burly firemen, sassy women, inappropriate humor, and lots of steam! Aug 28, Shelley rated it liked it Shelves: S Joyce has a number of series about Bear Shifters and they all interlink with each other, this one loosely so but still links.
The first series was about the Ashe Crew which so far I've enjoyed, a bunch of lumberjack werebears finding true love and keeping their mates safe. Then you get this crew, about firemen and I know that their job doesn't define them but you don't get much detail about his job, how it keeps the crew together or anything like you do in the Ashe Crew. There just wasn't mu T. There just wasn't much detail about their lives or the characters in general, and I can put aside the instantaneous I love you stuff and the knowing intimately what the other person is like only after a few days of being with them.
There is little history as to why the bond between Cody and Sarah didn't work and I think you need more of the little details and more backstory. I enjoyed the book but not as much as the Ashe Crew books I've read so far. Nov 27, Joanne Swinney rated it it was amazing. This is the first book in the Fire Bear Series.
Smolder (Dragon Souls, #1) by Penelope Fletcher
Bear shifters are totally my thing. I love a strong masculine alpha shifter. Cody Keller fits that description perfectly and then some. After Rory Dobson had a one night stand many moons ago she ended up with more than herself to take care of. All alone in the world Rory has some big decisions to make. This woman is a beautiful person and most certainly deserves some good karma in her life.

Cody Keller a bear shifter that has been let down in the past and is finding it difficult to move forward with his future or so his family think. Cody works at the firehouse in his home town. The images I have conjured up will need the whole fire brigade to put out the flames. If you love paranormal reads, especially shifter romance then this book is a must read for you. Bear My Soul by T. Joyce was a fantastic read. Rory is the human mother to Aaron, a 5 year old bear shifter. She has been trying to keep his shifter side a secret but it is getting harder each day. At a loss for what to do, she seeks out the help of his father in hopes he will know what to do. Cody is a sexy as hell firefighting bear, who is alpha to his crew. That in previous books in the series would tear that bear up. When the heroine blows in town he's on another date?! Idk I just thinks that's why I couldn't connect with the main characters in the beginning. Other than that I did enjoy the story. I loved Aaron the young shifter.
