I first started cross stitch on stamped items such as pillowcases. I thought I was doing so good until years later when I walked in a local shop and was blown away by the beautiful samplers and other pieces stitched on linen. They were so beautiful. After that I was hooked even more and took a quick class and learned to stitch on linen. The tea dyed is amazing for it really gives an old time look.
It takes one back in time and makes me appreciate what are ancestors did. I must have been ADD before they had a name for it! I probably made or more cross stitch pieces starting at age 6! I gave them all away. Looking back, the cross stitch helped to teach me patience. My daughter just visited me while her husband was deployed, he is a Marine. We have spent the last several months!
It has been so much fun. She has enjoyed spending this time learning all of these skills, and I have enjoyed passing them down. I love to find the cross stitiching from long ago when I go to the antique stores, always so beautiful, I need to find more ideas how to use them in my home. What a great idea. Mom had trouble seeing when she had catracts, but she could do the cross-stitch quilt blocks. I would buy them for her and the floss, and she would do that while watching TV.
I was able to give all the grandchildren one quilt and my two brothers. Trying to finish 3 different blocks quilts that she started. Old sewing and craft items come around every 10 years. Thanks for sharing with us. I have never cross-stitched but mayb e with the stamped pattern I could follow it. My daughter did learn to do it though! I did more needlework with a stamp canvas. I do love all things vintage and the pajama post from earlier post is awesome. I hope we do continue back in time as it comes around again to this look, but heck, I will wear it anyway, that is why I love vintage.
You don;t have to love popular today styles.

I too have cross stitched since I was a small child. Being an only child during the dead of winter in upstate NY, it passed the time. Now as an adult I collect vintage and antique linens and such. When my 3yr lets me I try to get in cross stitch when I can! Cross stitch was one of the very first crafts I learned. That was pure love. It was a sampler of their lives. It took me several months to stitch it, then have it framed.
But I was so happy to do it for them and they loved it. It hung on their living room wall for the rest of their lives. My grandmother taught me to do cross stitch on stamped pillowcases. I loved to do it then as much as I do now. I am so grateful that I had a grandmother who took the time and patience to teach me! I have collected vintage linens over the years, especially tablecloths and dresser scarves with nice embroidery.
I think I was perhaps 8 or 9 years old when I made it — and given that I am now 51 — the stitching has held up amazingly well. Oh I do remember the days of taking a current cross stitch project to work — my companion at lunchtime. Thanks for re-awakening that wonderful memory….
I think I am going to design some pillowcases that incorporate my love of quilting cotton fabric with a strip of fabric suitabe for cross stitching!!! I have been collecting Vintage Cross Stitch pieces for many years. I decided then and there to save them from land fill. I have amassed a huge collection of items and hope one day to do something meaningful with it all. I started crosstich when I won a kit in my 7 earrs old birthday, it became a passion and now I sell my own creations.
Now I sell my creations.
I have cross-stitched since I was 7, I think, so that is well over 60 years. It is wonderful to see the kids interested again. Back then it was an iron- on that my mother ordered from the newspaper. With 2 husbands i at a time who had many hospitalizations and hospice before going home to be with the Lord, I have done plenty of cross-stitching.
It remains a favorite. It says time for …kindness and for giving,Time for friendship and happy living. The time that those two ladies put into my wedding present make me smile and think of them each time I walk into my guest room.

I love to give my time to others as these ladies did to me. I will be teaching my 4 sweet granddaughters to do a little cross stitch soon. When I inherited my home about 20 years ago I found two samplers that I treasure. This house has been in the family since so there were many family photos and such, but finding these two samplers brought me shear joy. One my dear grandmother had cross-stitched the year after I was born and the other was folded up in an old envelope, cross-stitched by my great-great grandmother in when she was 14 years old.
Both are framed in archival materials and are proudly displayed in my home. Although I enjoy several kinds of needlework, cross-stitch is my favorite. The last piece I did was also a sampler in shades of blue for my dearest friend and I loved evert stitch. Hi Amy I was taught by a lady,Francis who lived next door to us,how to cross stitch and embroidery. She was like a Mom to us and not only patient but skillful with a needle!
I was 8, my sister 6. I love to cross stitch; I make cross stitch face dolls. I have made a Santa clause and a little girl called Elizabethan and an Irish boy. The year I made dolls for an orphanage in Africa. The girls and boys love the dolls. The lady who took them took pictures with the girls and boys holding the dolls.
It just warmed my hart.

I saw the sneak preview of your book on your website and I love it!!! My mother passed on quite some time ago. She was a crocheter and cross- stitcher. I think everyone in the family has a tablecloth, placemats or pillow cases that she did. I did TONS of counted cross-stitch when my son had to have heart surgery. It was therapeutic and took away some of the tension.

I hope my friends appreciated the gifts as much as I needed the projects! I learned to embroider at a very young age. I loved all of the colored thread and the fact that with just a simple embroidered line………I would end up with a bird, flower or something just as pretty. Embroidery is still one of my favorite all time crafts.
I made cross stitch gifts for years, and now am really enjoying embroidery. I have pillowcases and dish towels from my aunts given to me many years ago that have inspired me to try my own hand at it. These hand made items are treasures, and so love that you inspire and encourage, and I am definitely happy that each day I learn something new.
I love hand embroidered things! I love cross stitch! I cross stitched as a child and then I got into the counted cross stitch craze a while back. I was recently working on the binding of a baby quilt as my husband was helping a friend by a new truck and an older gentlemen noticed the baby quilt. He just kept going on about what a family treasure this would be for the new baby.

He commented that he still has his own baby quilt made by his loving mother. I remember learning to cross stitch on a stamped dresser cloth. Later in life I moved on to counted cross stitch. I learned to embroider when I was a little girl and as an adult used to make crewel work pillows and plastic canvas Christmas ornaments, bookmarks, wall hangings, etc. The last few years, I have put the needlework projects on hold in favor of rubber stamping projects. I hope to get back to needlework in the not too distant future.
I got into cross stitch when my son was a newborn, learning to stitch while he nursed. I found it soothing and much better way to use the time more productively. My mother taught me how to make the fabric taut with the hoop, and thread the needle with at least 2 pieces of thread…. I picked it out! The blanket was crib size for my baby doll. Then it was on to pillow cases and samplers! Such enjoyment and sense of accomplishment at a very young age.
I think I was about 8 yrs.
