Ruby Red (Jewel series Book 3)
Germain was around, and a number of other years in between. So, there is a line of men and a line of women who can time travel. St-Germain figures something out, and figures out that a machine, called the chronograph can help regulate the traveling, which manifests when about 16 and requires the person to travel for the rest of their lives. But, the original chronograph was stolen by Lucy and Paul to prevent something.
And that pissed off the Lodge. The Lodge found another and restored it, but to get the circle to close they need a drop of blood from each of the travelers each assigned one of 12 jewels. So Gideon has been going back in time to get the drops. But when Charlotte turns out not to be the traveler, Gwyneth has to help but she is warned by her mother that it might not be the right thing to do even though the lodge believes it is.
Gwyneth begins to travel with Gideon and she meets the Count and is threatened by him. They also get attacked. They think that Lucy and Paul are behind it, but that is not proven. In fact, they believe that stopping the chronograph from being completed is what is best. Other Important Things to Remember for Later: For starters, Gideon and Gwyneth are kissing in a church when the book abruptly ends.
Bernard, the housekeeper is a little weird, but I think he knows more and is more involved then it seems. Glenda is royally pissed about Charlotte not being the ruby. When Gwyneth travels into the past while at the Lodge, she is told to touch nothing, but she steals a key. Gwyneth can see Dr. The Count states the following after meeting Gwyneth: Ruby red, with G major, the magic of the raven, brings the Circle of Twelve home into safe haven. And he seems to think that he should have meet Gwyneth before.
Gideon has gotten blood from all but Elaine, Margaret, Lucy and Paul to put in the new chronograph. Lucy tells them that Gwyneth in particular must never meet the Count. And Lucy knows that Gwyneth has the magic of the raven Gideon says that the magic of the raven is just a myth.
And Lucy tells her to talk to Grandfather and ask him about the Green Rider. The poem that seems important: Mighty Emerald next, with lovely Citrine. Then almost at once comes Diamond alone, whose sign of the lion as Leo is known. Time flows on, both present and past, Ruby red is the first and is also the last. The Male line of descent: The Female line of descent: A few of the time traveling rules here: The chronograph sets max and minimum times to travel — 30 mins to 4 hours. I have no idea… and the chronograph can be moved or taken places though so you can travel back in time to the place you need to be.
The pace of the book was world-class sprinting pace. Time traveling stories are a challenge for me. And there is still a whole lot of mystery to be solved. It is currently, for now at least, noted that this is the first in a trilogy. Unless these take the Moral Instruments or Immortal series paths to doom and turn into a train wreck of extended series beyond what was originally planned.
There seems to be a decent base built for both a budding romance between Gwyneth and Gideon, as well as the plot twists and turns that are presumably coming. Although I am not sure the author has grasped the ability to be subtle with foreshadowing. It seemed to give, what turned out to be a fast paced book, a really slow start. And it lowered my expectations of the plot and what the author might be able to pull off. Charlotte is a multitalented model student, beautiful, graceful, and poised.
Gwyneth - Gwen for short - scrapes by in school, trips on her own legs, suffers from a nervous stomach, says the wrong thing everytime, has no fashion sense, and her only talent is memorizing inane pop culture Sixteen-year-olds Gwyneth Shepherd and Charlotte Montrose are cousins, born only two days apart and raised in the same house by their close-knit, comically dysfunctional family. Gwyneth - Gwen for short - scrapes by in school, trips on her own legs, suffers from a nervous stomach, says the wrong thing everytime, has no fashion sense, and her only talent is memorizing inane pop culture trivia.
Also she sees dead people. There are two families in this London with a secret "time travel" gene that manifests in the de Villiers men and the Montrose women. Each time-traveller's birth has been foretold. Charlotte is apparently this generation of Montrose' traveller, called the Ruby, and she has been trained since early childhood. But there's been a mistake.
The Ruby is not Charlotte, but awkward, silly Gwen, who has no idea what to do. And now a threat from the past is about to enter the present, because of course it is. Gideon de Villiers and Gwen are attacked by assassins in the eighteenth century. She saves him by picking up a sword and stabbing the last remaining assailant. There's a lot of blood, and she's aghast at how easily the blade pierced flesh "like cutting a cake! Their coachman got half his face shot off during the skirmish. The whole scene had a realistic, somber tone very different from the rest of the book. A few fleeting innuendos.
Gwen is embarrassed by the cleavage on her eighteenth-century gown and is given a bodice insert to cover it. On another occasion, she indignantly accuses Gideon of staring at her chest.

She bumps into a young couple who look just like her and Gideon kissing behind a curtain at a party in the s, and they themselves kiss at the end of the book - in the empty confessional of an abandoned church, which is not the best place for that, but then they were hiding from assassins A few used of "bloody" so we know we're in England.
Racokzy is experimenting with belladonna. Racokzy's drug use has made his eyes opaque like a corpse's. Germaine is a Sith Lord in all but name. The Circle claims that their time machine needs blood samples from all the travellers in order to run. Conclusion This Ruby is not quite perfectly cut. There are a few parts where you can tell it was written by an Anglophile rather than a real Briton, and many places where you can tell it was written by an adult rather than a teen most of Gwen's movie star tidbits go back to the 90s.
The conflict is extremely hard to follow. Gwen often reads like a much younger character - she constantly whines and panics, needs everything explained to her over and over again, and must either eat, throw up, or go to "the loo" every two pages of so. But you can still recognize the London setting, the plot is no sillier or more convoluted than the average YA urban fantasy - and Gwen's pathetic awkwardness is actually acknowledged and played for laughs, making her a lot more relatable than many other main characters in this genre.
Even the sparks between her and the much cooler Gideon are plausible enough; the book just asks us to believe that they are attracted to each other, not that they're already in love after two days of knowing each other. I haven't read anything like this yet! I didn't love it as much as other young adult books out there, but I think that's mainly because I listened to this as an audiobook, which I've never done before.
It took me a while to get used to the reader's posh British accent but eventually I really got into it! The story is centered in England so it was kind of fitting anyway. First of all, I loved the whole time traveling idea and it was thought out beautifully! I've never read a book about time travel before, and I loved that it wasn't scientifical but just something that occurs in Gwyneth's family when some chosen people reach a certain age.
All the events happening in this book were really exciting, from Gwyneth discovering it's her possessing the time travel gene and not her cousin Charlotte, to all the funny and sometimes scary situations she encounters during her expected and sometimes unexpected time travels, to Gwyneth seeing dead people's ghosts Everything had me yearning for more and I wonder how it all connects! What I didn't like however, were practically all the major characters. The side characters, like Leslie, James, Gwyneth's mom, Lucy, Paul, and even Charlotte, were all pretty interesting and likeable.
They were all unique and a big part of what made this story so good. But oh dear gods , I didn't like Gwyneth and Gideon at all! Gwyneth acted like a scared, whiny and clueless little girl most of the time, which annoyed me to death! I sincerely hope she'll grow some backbone soon. Gideon however is just a bossy, cocky prick and I don't trust him one bit!
I really hope to see some major character development in the next books. All in all, I liked it but I didn't love it. I'm going to listen to the next two audiobooks anyway though! They really can't leave me hanging like this after ending Ruby Red with a kissing scene, ugh! I'd love to read more aboud Gwyneth's supposed magic as well. I did enjoy it but I hope the sequels pack more of a punch. Caution - LOTS of fat shaming in chapter Nov 21, Lara rated it liked it. I liked this book. It was fast paced and a cute story. I would lie if I say I like the majority of the characters. I felt a little sad for Gwendolyn because almost everyone around her acted like spoiled brats however, I'd survive anything if I had a best friend like Leslie.
Overall it was a short and quick read and I really enjoyed it. Time to watch the movie! Apr 18, Cara rated it liked it Shelves: I decided I was going to take some time to percolate my ideas for this book, but it's still up in the air what I exactly think. Had some aspects I liked i. All right synopsis first: Gwen is a sixteen-year-old girl who lives in London the book was written in German originally so I'm not sure why that setting was chosen. Normal enough, but she comes from a family who can time-travel. Thankfully the gene bypassed her and was given t I decided I was going to take some time to percolate my ideas for this book, but it's still up in the air what I exactly think.
Thankfully the gene bypassed her and was given to her perfect cousin Charlotte. Gwen can enjoy a normal life without all the drama that comes with having the "special" gene. Well can you tell what's gonna happen? Gosh darn it you got it! I'm not usually this cynical really; I'm just kind of irritated about my feelings about the book.
Gwen's got the gene instead and there is lots of mystery shrouded around why this is. Now with Gwen thrown into this whole new world she meets Gideon who is a bit of distraction to Gwen, to her great dismay ; together they have an important mission to accomplish but it's hard to tell who are the bad and good guys, and if they can even trust each other. The workings and the history behind the society is interesting. It reminds me of setups of other secret societies actually.
What kind of bothered me was how Gwen has thoughts and says things like a twelve or thirteen year old which would have been fine if that was her age. Then when she meets Gideon and gets in deep with the time-traveling stuff she shifts, which was nice to see but kind of abrupt for me. Of course it has those cool scenes of how events clash the present, past and future.
Even though I have my reservations about it, I know others will just eat this up.

I hate when I'm indecisive about a book, but you need some books like that so you can appreciate the amazing ones. There is no major piece of the puzzle solved but it tantalizes you mercilessly and I will read the sequel. No matter my confusion of what I think I have to know what happens.
View all 5 comments. It sucked me in from page 1, and I just ordered the next two books. I am so intrigued, and time travel is seriously a lifelong dream of mine. Plus it is set in London. Seriously, what's there not to love? And a little Gideon don't hurt nobody ; Can't wait to continue on with this series.
Apr 29, Lane rated it liked it Shelves: Not the best time travel book I've read, but not the worst So once again this book was just okay. I really enjoyed the humor of the present time brought into the past though. Gwendolyn trying to sum up the next years to men in the s was fantastic comic relief. I'm not sure what it is but I always find the female MCs in these books incredibly annoying.
So it wasn't exactly surprising t Not the best time travel book I've read, but not the worst So it wasn't exactly surprising that I didn't really like Gwendolyn. Though I do think the background story of how she became the time traveler of her family was interesting and gave a good twist to the beginning of the book. I actually quite liked the spark of romance anticipated romance?
Gideon has a pretty bad start, since he's in love with Charlotte, but he really progresses over the course of the book and comes to appreciate Gwendolyn. I wasn't that annoyed by Charlotte. It's really her family's fault that she had such a big head, and doesn't respond super well when she isn't the family's traveler, but the traveling aspect of this book was actually pretty dangerous so maybe she came out better than where she started.
Despite the immaturity of a lot of the characters which to me was Gideon's best argument for being uninterested , I think Lesley might have been my favorite character. A good best friend who does research to help with your problems. I was a fan. Overall, a eh book to me and my time with the series will probably end here.

THAT is how it ends?! I need the next one! This was fun My full review can be found here. View all 3 comments. I felt like since the female protagonist has the ability to see ghost, it would be better if she just marry one of them. Let me explain the romance. Boy meets girl, he hates her to hell and is super rude towards her but then she saves him so all he can do to repay her is to freaking kiss her. And may I remind, the girl was just fine with it because as what the author described the boy, he was just handsome!
That type of boy who can rock a long hair. I mean, who the hell raised you, boy? Btw, her mom and her relatives were super selfish. I am so disappointed because I was greeted by a bunch of boring time-travels. I mean I do get it but dafuq?! No unnecessary description of places and stuff considering that this book was all about time-travel! It's also very short - only pages - so it really just felt like a setup. I was frustrated at the end, realizing I'd just read an introduction and would have to read the next book to get anywhere with it.
But I decided to continue on since this one was so short and fast to read, and it didn't drag even though not much has happened yet. It is definitely YA-ish in tone and depth. It's not very sophisticated, and has a lot to do with mean family members and other stuck up people ones I'm seriously hoping get what's coming to them , and Gwyneth trying to find out the truth about a world that has been hidden from her for her whole life. Now she's suddenly part of it but they are still not telling her anything. The time travel parts are regrettably few and short, although the concept is interesting they talk about it quite a bit, but don't actually do it much.
I hope there will be more time spent in other time periods in the next book.
Book Series Tracker (and spoilers!)
There's a bit of romance, too, but it came out of nowhere, so I wasn't that convinced. I think it probably should have waited until later in the series but they had to make something happen in the first book. At least it was a fast read, and kept me somewhat entertained for an evening.
My hopes are all on book two for some real development in all areas. Apr 21, Isabella Zink rated it liked it. One of my least favorite tropes in a story is mystery fabricated only through characters not telling each other anything, especially family. It also doesn't help that Gwyneth is as dim as can be.
Lesley is basically the only useful character in this whole story. Anyway, I can see why people like the series but I won't be continuing. Too many groans experienced during this read.
#1: Ruby Red | Book Series Tracker (and spoilers!)
When I turned the page to see that the "next chapter" is actually epilogue, I was completely confused. This is where we are left? So obviously it is a cliffhanger ending and I will definitely be reading the next book soon-ish. The book itself was very exciting and addictive at the beginning but lost me around the middle. It seems like it is written for teens, not quite young adults. It was an easy, quick read and fun as well. Unfortunately though with quite one-sided c When I turned the page to see that the "next chapter" is actually epilogue, I was completely confused. Predictable and unpredictable at the same time.
The story itself is interesting and intriguing, but I cannot really just get over some of the London bits that just did not make the slightest sense to me, I will not name them so I wouldn't spoil the book for others But it was somewhat painful to read about the city I live in and have the "mistakes" that make you want to tear your hair out. If I would tell Tom that I'll just pop over to Oxford St to get some bonbons, he would definitely tell me to get some help from a doctor, not a butler to carry my sweets, don't be a smartass. As would anyone who lives here.
Anyway, I managed to swallow the bitter bits and tried to just be happy about a fun little story and that is exactly what it was - sort of a teenage romance with time travelling element. I think my feelings for this book wildly have to do with the timing I read it. I really was looking for something like this and so that is why I enjoyed it so much, however, there are many problems. Check out my full review at www. I was kind of disappointed with this one to be honest. Don't get me wrong, I looooved the time travel aspect of it!
But the the two main characters just totally failed to capture my interest. I felt like they were two dimensional and I didn't feel any kind of connection with them at all. Despite that, I did still enjoy this book. The time travel aspect was excellent and that cliffhanger at the ending! From what I read from other people's reviews I thought I was going into a great action fast paced time traveling book. Did I get that? What I got was a sappy cliched middle grade book with a predictable story. If 15 year old Brandon would have read this, he prolly would have thought it would be the best book ever but no.
I just couldn't take it seriously and the insta love was a def turn off.

IDK, is it because of the writing that was translated or how the author wrote it? It was really simple in the way that I find in middle grade books. Overall, I actually bought the whole series and now am contemplating wether or not to plow on and finish reading because I heard it does get better Jun 04, jenn rated it liked it Shelves: With just a little over three hundred pages I flowed through the book in one evening.
I love the concept of this book, timetravel is carried in genes and unbridled my nature. Already not far into the book Gwen gets pulled into the past and then comes back. Gwyneth's character is instantly likeable, she's curious, brave and sometimes quick-witted. Her distress, fears and angst are easy to grasp and understand. There is a lot of internal dialogue with herself which I particularly like, there was plenty of humor and it brings out her distinct personality.
Despite it being a fast read — there is a lot going on with such an intriguing and mysterious backstory. I love how the story is fastened to a prophecy and a strange secret society. We clearly don't know every thing that goes on and by the end of the book we are left with a lot of unanswered questions which leaves me rather excited and dying for the sequel.
What is Gwyneth's magic? Why are Paul and Lucy so determined not to close the circle and reveal this secret? And can we trust Paul and Lucy? Those being the most prominent issues. If you love fast moving and action driven plots with timetravel and adventure then I recommend you give Ruby Red a try! May 19, maggie rated it liked it Shelves:
