This is the second book in this series that I have read and I have to say that I did enjoy it. It didn't blow me away either, it's a solid story but to me it just seems to be missing something and I can't quite put my finger on what that is yet. Barbara is a smart funny woman who substitutes at a high school, but trouble and danger seems to find her in some quirky fashion or another.

Meanwhile the most interesting thing so far that I have found is her dog Cheesepuff, who seems to have a better social life than her or anyone else for that matter. And the author does a good job of showing his personality. I'm on to book 3 so I'm hoping it gets a lot more exciting. If you're looking for a book just to pass the time then I recommend this. Thanks for sharing your talent Carolyn J. This book is as good as the first. Barbara's new mystery is how to dig her self out of her financial problems as she struggles with the manager where she lives plotting against pets, ex-husband begging her to be a witness for him when he goes to trial, a computer hacker at the high school works at wrecking havoc.

Then, topping things off a large man keeps threatening violence and her car breaks down.

As in previous books, Cheese Puff is still the star as Barbara has to take a backseat to his adoring fans. He now even has a love interest, the career oriented yet still has that dog-next-door charm, Lola. Barbara is better at sleuthing and Dave, her boyfriend, is still protecting her and hauling in the bad guys. To her benefit, Barbara not only must deal with her love smitten dog, but also her eccentric sister, and Dave's daughter.

The secondary characters from the school are also still there and whether helping, hindering, or neither they are all humorous with their All together, they keep you laughing. It kept me up half the night with romance, mystery, and humor. The book has an effective blend of humor and mystery, and is light enough on the romance elements that they do not get in the way of the story. It has some improbable elements such as the fairy godmother-type neighbor and a reader should probably like dogs in order to enjoy much of the humor.

Some of the supporting characters seemed "over the top" in terms of eccentricities--but I haven't been near a highschool for. Reading the first book first will probably enhance this story, but it seems to me to be able to stand alone. One person found this helpful. I am reading this delightful series by Carolyn Rose. Ms Rose and I live in the same town and I love the local references. Love, love, love her character Barbara and all the characters surrounding Barbara.
