Chances are that your students were brought up in cozy elementary classrooms surrounded by colorful walls filled with theme-based decorations. Break your class into two to four equally paired groups. Provide each group with a small board and marker or chalk. Write a long equation on the board. Set the timer for five or 10 minutes. Tell your students that each team member must work through the problem on a separate piece of paper.

After everyone finishes the problem, the team must talk through the answers and agree on one answer to write on their small board. When the timer goes off, each group must hold up their answer. Keep score of each correct answer for each group. The winning group should get a prize, such as a free homework pass or temporary tattoo. Before class, cut out several pictures of household items that you would normally buy at the store, such as milk, eggs, socks, bread and notebook paper. Use a glue stick to attach these to note cards.
