The most delicious part is all the little asides that creator and author Julian Fellowes treats us to among the pages. His work appears to be word for word with no improvisation or stepping away from the script. So how soon does Season Four start here? My wife and I were late-comers to the world of Downton Abbey but we went back to the beginning to watch Series 1 and fell in love with it immediately.

I've always enjoyed reading the scripts of TV shows and movies as well as watching the commentaries to get special insight into the characters so I bought this without a thought as soon as it was available. As a fan of "people-watching" and of history, this book does not disappoint. But I really enjoyed reading the comments by Julian Fellowes as they gave a better understanding to a world of which most Americans know nothing. I'm a sap when it comes to Downton Abbey, and I was rather bereft when the series ended. Julian Fellowes is such a fantastic writer, especially when it comes to these classes of people, and you can tell this historical era was rather fascinating to him.

I really love to read shooting scripts, especially when I'm fairly familiar with what actually made it to the screen. So when I discovered the library had this copy of the scripts I snatched this book right up and devoured it. They are perfect for something to tide me over while I wait for Seasons Two and Three. I have to reminisce a little bit with this one. It's crazy to think how long it's been since it was a new phenomenon! I remember watching the first episode on PBS and getting hooked. He is basically a textbook of information regarding Victorian England, so be ready to get the nitty-gritty details of hows and whys. It was a birthday present! Why spend time reading scripts for a show I have already watched and can rewatch anytime I want? Because this is really good for my long train rides! I learned a lot about the period from them. Learned a lot of behind the scenes too. These were more interesting than the actual scripts themselves of course, but to give the scripts credit reading them was almost like watching the show but with the added benefit of commentary.

However, Fellowes takes the time to annotate all scripts. This means he talks about the way things played out, the history and personal stories behind story decisions, and much more. Add in that you also get to read portions of the script that were edited out in final cut, it makes for quite a pleasurable read.

I absolutely loved the commentary that Fellowes provides in the various scripts, explaining the origin of some of the customs of the servants and the family, things that we as modern viewers wouldn't necessarily understand. I was highly intrigued by his recounting the origin of some of the incidents within the episodes and how they came from his own experiences growing up.

You could think it might be boring because it is a script and everyone who watches Downton Abbey already knows what's going to happen but there were so many additional scenes, so much background information; I've learned so much more about the story, characters and time period - it was an absolute pleasure to read!
