Zillions of Games That You Can Make For Your Kids
A summer issue of Zillions advised renting old movies from the library if the new releases were checked out, since the plots were rehashed anyway.
Readers wrote in to suggest positive alternatives to spending, like reusing items from your last school year, borrowing toys, and shopping at thrift stores. Zillions is probably the first place I saw people brag about how cheap they got something. Naturally, a publication by adults and for kids will touch on typical marketing bad guys like smoking, popularity, and violence.

But Zillions also covered more common and low-profile dangers, like sexism. Zillions showed gender bias in the kinds of jobs and products kids are offered and opened a dialogue. Unfortunately, Zillions folded in As a subscriber, I got a card in the mail announcing the change, eventually recycled all my copies and never saw Zillions again.
We forget how anxious kids are to learn about the adult world, which is part of the attraction of magazines. I read Seventeen and CosmoGirl to know what older teens were thinking. But in the end, Zillions exposed me to the most realistic of adult concerns: In the back of my mind I figured if I ever got really desperate to read it again, I could go to the Library of Congress. Kids wrote in with fads they had noticed in their area, but especially their schools. Or about the trend of wearing watches in your hair? The suggestions for the cards, which ranged from gross to breathtakingly useful were sent in by kids and illustrated by a former MAD illustrator who was incredibly talented in drawing gross ideas as gruesomely as possible.
This back page of the magazine mocked celebrity endorsements with increasingly absurd products with hilarious names.

This was a great parody of actual teen dramas as well as the spending pressures of trends, but also about being a good friend. I spent a lot of time at the Library of Congress just reading it instead of scanning.

Kids most objected to ads where people were mean to each other or refused to share. They simultaneously choose and reveal a card from their hand, then add the cards to the rows, with cards being placed in ascending order based on their number. When the sixth card is placed in a row, the owner of that card claims the other five cards and the sixth card becomes the first card in a new row.

The game revolves around seating multi-national customers in a restaurant. The board shows many different tables, each with four chairs around them. The tables are grouped by nation, so the Chinese like to sit with other Chinese. However, some of the chairs are on the border between two nations, so a person from either place could occupy the seat. To further complicate things, each of the people is either male or female, and tables must be gender-balanced.
The great thing about the digital version of the game is that it helps you figure it all out. Players then use combinations of those collected items to convert to victory points. I was almost able to play the physical game at SaltCon earlier this year, but had to pass up the chance. Carcassonne has been a Family Favorite board game ever since we got into board gaming with our kids. We love playing the tiles and watching the countryside grow and develop differently every time.
Sure the tiles get placed, and the countryside grows. But in a sense, it also shrinks.

To see the whole area, you have to zoom out. Which makes everything smaller in view and scope. The countryside will always be limited by the screen size. A few are great outright. Others it will depend on the setting. Taking a bunch of digital board games on a tablet will save a lot of space and can be easy to pass around in the car, van, or airplane.
There are a zillion digital games available to give us a break from time to time. Subscribe to our reviews and articles. I am a bit skeptical about the non-abstract digital board games. The time crunch and silly things that happen with everyone scrambling to build a ship seems hard to capture in a digital version.
