The Art of Sacrifice in Chess (Dover Chess)
Chapter 21 presents some of Mikhail Tal's magic, and chapter 22 is on Shirov's sacrifices. Chapter 23 is on defense, chapter 24 gives some final exercises for the road, and then there are 50 pages of solutions.
The Art of Sacrifice in Chess by Rudolf Spielmann
As half the book is brand new, this is not a minor revision! I think the book is worthwhile in both its parts, and could be appreciated and well-used by players rated from, say, one should have basic tactical proficiency to get the most out of the book all the way up to and through the master level. Product Review
Do you think these books should be called the 'art' of? Surely chess is more of a science or a branch of maths and logic, and maybe elements of statistics and probability.

Of course, great chess is often poetry in motion to we less talented observers and there's always the psychological element, but the computer engines don't indulge in abstract thinking. I think "art" is appropriate, at least in the case of what Spielmann calls "real sacrifices", because it is a matter of judgment and imagination rather than something our finite intellects can deduce or calculate to a conclusion. I am bothered by some of this reissues of classic chess books.
Changing the notation to algebraic and adding diagrams is reasonable, since it does not change the work of the author. Now,correcting analysis, modernizing the language, and adding new material, that in my opinion is literary vandalism and those who partake in this should be ashamed of themselves.. Personally I will never buy a book like this. I understand where you are coming from, but I think there can be a right way and a wrong way to do these things.
First, if the bad analysis is simply expunged and replaced by corrected analysis, that would be a sort of vandalism.

I know of books where that has been done, and I share your extreme distaste for that practice. That isn't the case here: Spielmann's analysis is given in full, and corrections are interpolated in the text, clearly marked by a differently colored font given in italics. As for modernizing the language, I'm not sure what you're referring to. The form of notation was changed, from descriptive notation e. P-K4 to algebraic e. And third, I don't see why the new chapters would count as "vandalism"; it's clear that these are wholly new, they are added on after the end of the original material, and it's completely clear that they are by a different author.
