A Kiss From Maddalena is a tender and compassionate coming-of-age story about family duty and love in a time and place when world events and modern ideas seemed distant and incomprehensible, even as the enemy bombed houses, its tanks rumbled through the village, and young sons, often uncertain why they were fighting in the first place, rarely came home.

Alternately lighthearted, romantic, and devastating, it is a realistic and bittersweet account of the passions of youth and the innocence of a simpler, bygone era. Castellani, a young American writer, takes the Stendhalian viewpoint in this charming first novel.

Vito, Maddalena and Carolina are strong characters, and Castellani creates a velvety, cinematic atmosphere Like a Verdi opera, Castellani's story creates a certain grandeur out of its own lightness. A beautiful rendering of provincial life, with the unchanging natural rhythms and structured society Castellani's faultless reproduction of a distant time and place, his elegant, eloquent prose, and his warm sympathy mark him as a talent to watch. This is a poignant love story set against an extremely convincing picture of wartime society in a small Italian village. A couple travel to a remote cabin in Montana where an encounter with an overbearing neighbor leads to a terrifying ordeal.

A camp counselor suffering from blackouts finds himself surrounded by murder victims. He turns to his horror movie enthusiast friend for advice, and to contend with the idea he may be the killer. As he sets out to prove this story is real and release it as a work of his own, he loses himself and the film crew following him into his project. A pretty nice entry in the found footage genre. There have been a lot of these, and frankly I have stopped watching them because the premise is pretty much the same for each one. Well, this one was different. There are multiple layers to this film, and the subplots weave in and out of each other expertly. There was some good payoff to this movie as well. A lot of found footage films leave you with more questions than answers.

This one has plenty of answers for the viewer.

This is about a couple of film students who go missing while filming footage of trying to summon "blinkman". Now the footage has been found by a failed directer. He wants to market this footage, and has a documentary crew following him around while he tries to do this. Along the way we have one very good jump scare, and a couple stomach churning moments. I Had to hit the pause button a couple times to freeze-frame and let the image sink in.

A medical seer tells him she will recover if his friend Ya Sun can orbit the earth in the opposite direction that it's rotating. The sobering moral is that you can't go against the rules of nature.
