WELCOME TO MY WORLD
I have to say that I really loved the concept of a story's main character, Harri, - a travel agent who had never travelled abroad before - but the whole thing was an exercise in confusion and despicable characters who all appear to be cheating on each other or ruining each other's lives when they're all supposed to love and care about each other. And I swear I could rant endlessly about the character of Stella, the 'best friend' of the novel who seems to delight in cutting Harri down at every available moment while she swans around with her perfect, and highly unrealistic, life.
The whole novel was just so frustrating to read, especially because I was looking forward to it and it ended up so far below my expectations. I gave Welcome to My World two stars because I liked the idea behind it and I actually finished it without flouncing. This isn't one that I would recommend though. Jul 06, Emylie rated it liked it Shelves: This book frustrated me. There were times when I had to convince myself to keep going and parts that kept me moving along.
Perhaps if it had been a little shorter I would have enjoyed it more?? At times it felt like getting to the point took way too long and some of the dialogue felt unnatural. I also dislike when authors blatantly say things like "little did they know that would all change" at the end of a chapter. That got annoying fast.
Apr 13, MBC rated it it was ok Shelves: Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for chick lit, but by the end of this book I was annoyed and the more I think about it, the more annoyed I become. I may have liked it better in first person and I definitely would have enjoyed it more if I'd liked the main character better. I kept thinking fondly of Kirstin Gore's character Sammy in Sammy's Hill and wishing for a protagonist like that to cheer up the book.
Dec 08, Hannah rated it liked it. Harriet was a character which i found was likeable and relate-able to this is one of the main reasons i enjoyed this book. The first paragraph or so is set in a ladies loo were Harriet is hiding in the present day each chapter takes you through how she ended up there. The book was better than i thought it was going to be at first i wondered how long it would take to find out why she's hiding in a ladies loo cubical. The main plot of the book is Harriet's boyfriend Rob is always working away o Harriet was a character which i found was likeable and relate-able to this is one of the main reasons i enjoyed this book.
The main plot of the book is Harriet's boyfriend Rob is always working away or so she thinks so she agrees to help best friend Alex's mum set him up with a woman. They set him on several dates through a magazine sort of thing for them to fall out and Harriet sets Alex up with Chelsea a fake tanned barbie doll. He surprising takes to Chelsea. However the biggest shock for both of them is yet to come when Harriet and Alex kiss.
I enjoyed the details about the holidays she would like to take her number one place to visit is Venice. She does end up visiting Venice however it is right at the end of the book so we don't get to hear much about the spots she visits in Venice. Dec 24, Chermaine rated it liked it. So, I read Welcome to My World. Harriet works for a local travel agency. She meets Alex, a care-free spirit, who travelled for 10 years. They form a friendship, and Harriet finds herself in a surreal situation involving a magazine, lots of letters and a new realisation.
She had great chemistry with her best friend Alex and his mum. Her work colleagues added an extra depth of humour to the novel Read the rest of the review at www. A huge fight was brewing and then it was over in half a paragraph. The travel obsessed travel agent has never left the country, only saying 'you know why' except the readers had no idea why.
Alex may not have pitied her, but I sure did since she waited around for permission to live her life. I finished it only to be done it. I've read some other D These characters are not fun to read about, unfortunately.

I got bored with the book very quickly, it's predictable and drags on with unnecessary descriptions. I tried to push on reading, but ended up reading the first 60 pages and the last 2 pages. Aug 10, Avalonia Night rated it really liked it. The book was-shall we say-a bit different. Except for Stone Yardley seeming to be a place right out of fairy tales.
Sep 23, Hayley Gullen rated it liked it. I enjoyed this cosy romantic read. I felt it dragged a little in places, and I wasn't convinced by Alex's romantic choices, but overall it was a nice piece of escapism.

The writing is equally florid, and strong. Harri dreams of romantic adventures abroad while even her travel agency customers are only interested in weekend trips in the country. For those dreams of foreign adventure she looks to childhood friend Alex Brannan who has just returned from years abroad, and living by his wits, to open a coffee shop in town. Alex turns out to be the hunk that the magazine and women are looking for. There seems to be no sense of urgency to any of the storylines. She seems very satisfied within her life and none of the frustrations of her life drive her towards anything.
Harri is the most reactive character in the book. The climactic action takes place over Christmas and the cover art is definitely suggestive of the holiday season. Sep 25, Rosie Read rated it did not like it Shelves: Harriet Langton is a travel agent who's always wanted to travel and yet never has. She's a fairly likeable and standard character, dissatisfied with life and work and yearning for a change. I found the usual cast of characters that are meant to support Harriet overwhelmingly selfish or woefully underdeveloped.
The obligatory best friend seems to be on a n Harriet Langton is a travel agent who's always wanted to travel and yet never has. The obligatory best friend seems to be on a never-ending quest for Mr. Right to the point where she completely ignores her friend. I got so frustrated with the relationship between Harriet and Stella. One of the main threads of most romance novels is a close friendship and to me it's one of the most important and on this front Welcome to My World falls woefully short.
Alex, our hero is suitably likeable and exotic for a romance lead. However, Dickinson concentrates so much on his travels and experiences, which he relates to Harriet throughout the book, that he never really develops as a character. The resulting situation where Harriet sets up Alex with Chelsea, who she sees as a nightmare date, also seems a bit weird. From the little we know of Alex and Chelsea it seems unlikely that they would form a functioning couple and yet this is what we are supposed to believe with little effort put in by Dickinson.
Finally, the book is scattered with a considerable amount of dialogue that doesn't seem to do much to help the plot along, unless it is meant to inject some lighthearted humour, which I admit it did occasionally do. Harriet's story did keep me interested until the end, starting the novel off with Harriet hiding in a toilet cubicle the book works backwards to explain how she ended up in her current predicament and keeps you wondering about the plot's crescendo until the very last.
I honestly don't mean to be too critical of Welcome to My World. Dickinson has crafted an enjoyable lighthearted read, which is what the book it is meant to be, and it did keep me interested enough to finish. I think the novel would be a perfect read for a holiday when you just want something diverting for an occasional hour or two.
However, if you are looking for anything more I think you'll find Welcome to My World lacking.
Apr 13, Meeeriams Fleep rated it it was ok. I didn't like this book; there was too much meaningless and insignificant dialougue which was infinitely boring and did nothing to speed up the story. In fact I doubt if it heplped the plot along at all, unless it was meant to add a hint of humour. No offence or anything, but I did not find it humourous at all. And she put in too many characters and alot of them had similar names so I had trouble remembering which was which. I mean, I kept getting confused between her cat Ron and her boyfriend Ro I didn't like this book; there was too much meaningless and insignificant dialougue which was infinitely boring and did nothing to speed up the story.
I mean, I kept getting confused between her cat Ron and her boyfriend Rob! Seriously, why name a cat RON, especially when the boyfriend's called Rob? Also, the way they called each other 'mate' was unrealistic!!! Firstly, its mainly builders or young people who do that, and the way she presented those people, upper working class veering on middle-class It just doesn't work! It sounded alien when Alex kept on calling Harri 'mate', like some foreigner experimenting with words. People do NOT say 'mate' if they come from the background Miranda Dickinson portrayed her characters as coming from, and the fact that she used that word really pissed me off, however insignificant it may be.
Yes, I know its a tiny bit of the entire book, and yes, I must also acknowledge that her writing style is engaging, but seriously, large chunks of that book should have been cut out, and lots of the dialougue too. I found myself skipping whole pages because she was ranting on the same old things about Harri closing her eyes and going to Venice. And there were lots and lots of pages describing her characters, and well, to be honest, she'd already described them and was just refining that descriptiopn using newer words, and well, it just wasnt't on for me.
It was, to put it simply, boring. And for the record, I skipped the last two chapters and read the end, because I'd got so sick of it, so yeah, be warned. It a typical cliched chick-lit, and its honestly what any writer could dredge up. How I mourn for authors like Tolkein and Lewis Carroll. They held the true legacies of writing. Not these modern-day romanticisers. Jan 02, Simona rated it really liked it Shelves: Welcome to the world of the Miranda Dickinson books. Miranda is a great author and I finally found the time to read another one of her books, so here we go.
Harriet Langton is a dedicated travel agent, who has never ever left the UK. Yes, you heard right a travel agent, who has not at least seen some of the places she recommends to her clients. Her boyfriend Rob is always busy with work, so Harri finds the time to help her best friend Alex to find his true love. She signs him up for a magazine sp Welcome to the world of the Miranda Dickinson books.
She signs him up for a magazine spread, where women can answer to meet the guy. Harri, of course, is going through these carefully to find the right woman for Alex. Harri is such a lovely character, with so much passion for her job and with a dream to travel to Venice with her true love. I felt really bad for Harri, she deserves a man who loves her with all his heart. Now he owns his own coffee shop and I really admired their friendship.
They were there for each other all the time… Until, she overheard him saying something to his friend Jack, about her. She wants to take revenge and chooses a real Barbie for him. Well, you have to read this book to find out. Harri also had some great friends to help her go through everything: I loved them all, especially Viv always looking out for her son.
Let me just tell you that it was always full of drama and at one point she finally took some time off and left the country. Aug 02, Lucy Felthouse rated it really liked it. Harri and Alex quickly become good friends, and when he moans about not being able to find a girlfriend that will last, she agrees to help him.
With a lot of interference from his mother, Harri lines Alex up with some dates. In the meantime, her boyfriend, Rob, is spending more and more time at work. Such a great guy. But will she ever go? Or is she destined to stay in the UK indefinitely? It was a little jarring that the beginning of each chapter was in the present tense, then moved to flashbacks of the past, but I soon got used to it. It was also a good technique to keep you turning the pages, eager to find out what happened to force Harriet into her present situation.
This is still a great fun and very satisfying read. I never read Miranda Dickinson's debut novel so this second book of hers left me with no expectations. The front cover is a pretty standard affair when it comes to Chick Lit novels and as I had no comparisons I set out to read and hopefully find another great Chick Lit author. In the beginning of the story we meet Harriet better known as Harri who has locked herself in the cubicle of a toilet in the village hall.
