When I started this book I never dreamed it would hook me into researching and listening to opera, but that is exactly what happened. I found the book to be an excellent story in and of itself, as well as a fascinating look into the history of opera, LaScala, and the lives of some of the most famous operatic singers of all time.

Giovanni loved his father, who taught him to love opera and trained him to become an opera singer. It reminds him of the dream that he was close to giving up on. The story is enhanced by the abundance of interesting historical information about opera. It is an ode to opera as much as it is as an acclamation of the indomitable human spirit. Tempesta's Dream begins with the engaging story of a young Japanese woman waiting for her American husband to return home. The author tells the story simply and swiftly with an ending that is both an emotional and poignant moment of both "amicizia e amore" friendship and love.

I loved the historical tidbits, the English operatic translations of the original Italian lyrics, and the author's clear passion for the music, words, and stories of opera. Tempesta's Dream is superlative, spellbinding, wonderful, full of the drama and people and music and places and struggle and love and learning of the opera of Milan. Right now I can't think of a more beautifully written homage to dream-building, mixed with a love of great music, packaged in a historical fiction novel. Tempesta's Dream is amazing! The characters, conversation, the musical descriptions, all are fabulous, and the synergy of the separate elements to create this whole are second to none.

Unreservedly a five star rating.

There is no violence or sex, and the language is clean. More than highly recommended. What a lot of fun for a person with only passing opera acquaintance. Informative, while still being an impeling tale.
