This is not a bad book, the story is good, but I didn't like the author's style. And, as most film novelisation are, it's not as good as the film. Aug 05, Josh rated it it was ok Shelves: The concept far outweighed the execution. Sewell's adaptation could've resulted in a great and memorable piece of Australian crime fiction if only the author had neglected to adopt the James Patterson lack of explicit detail and two dimensional characterisation approach to writing this violent and bloody tale.
J, a 17yr old has led a rough life. With no father figure for guidance and a drug addict for a mother, his only form of solace lies with girlfriend Nicky. Needing a place to call home after his mothers death he finds a roof over his head and a mountain of bad baggage when he bunks with his extended and criminally renowned family. Smurf, is a Ma Baker type who doesn't bat an eyelid at her sons criminal enterprises.
Darren, Pope, Baz, and Craig are all young men with hardened careers on the wrong side of the thin blue line who at once welcome and segregate J to their way of life. Made to fell like an outcast, forced to don a foreign persona, threatened with loosing his girlfriend, and in fear of his life, J feels the full gambit of emotions as life as a Cody boy. Somehow author Stephen Sewell manages to instill some redeeming qualities in the young Cody criminal-by-association teen taking the reader on a journey all be it all too brief to self realisation and growth as his comes to terms with his predicament.

I haven't watch the film this novel was adapted from but hope it comes across with more character detail and overall depth. Despite some fragmented sequences and the obvious shortcomings, I did enjoy the story of this Aussie crime family and the pure brutality certain characters endured - there were glimpses of good.
This review also appears on my blog: Oct 02, Mary Pechacek rated it really liked it. Sure I can read that in the reviews quite few people have called it crap. But enter the world of crime and live in it either for real, on the edge of it or deal with it in your daily life as part of what you do and the writing takes on quality that is very real.

It is a writing style that utilized by the author tells the story through the eyes of J. Not often a story is told from a film. Usually the written work proceeds the visual media representation. There is of course the opportunity to rewrite the story with an entirely different style. That would be interesting. I bought this book at the local Op shop for 25 cents for something to read while on a self designated retreat on an isolated beach camp for several months.

After I downloaded my free books, and perused the summaries of each, I decided on this one. So, on with the review. Iain Rob Wright has a tagline - "Fear on Every Page" - now, I am not sure if that is on all of his books or not, but it fits well with this book! Wright wastes absolutely no time , jumping right into the meat of the story, and continues the thrills with rapid-fire precision! In this book, Wright has created a rag-tag group of both likeable and unlikeable characters who are trapped within the zoo during an animal uprising. After reading this book, I am beginning to think twice about renewing my local zoo's yearly membership, next month The characters in this book have to deal with lions, monkeys, elephants, reptiles, spiders, scorpions, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, etc.
By the end of this book you are questioning why is this happening?!? And then, brilliantly, After the epilogue, like an "after-credits-scene" in a movie, Wright ties it all together with "mini-stories" that have little tidbits that link directly into the main story. As if this book wasn't already awesome enough - the way Wright pulled off the end solidified me as a true fan!
I will definitely be reading his other books, and I will be hoping for a future sequel to this one! If you are burned out on zombie novels, this is a fresh take on what could possibly be part of the apocalypse, definitely check this one out! Oct 19, Su Ann added it. I am such a huge animal lover! It is frightening to imagine this ever happening. Bent on rearranging the natural order of things and sending mankind into extinction. Wright's writing to be on par right alongside the early Stephen King.
King's writing has changed a lot since his accident. In my opinion, it's just not as good. This author knows exactly how to scare people. He scares the bejeezus out of me! His writing is good. Some parts really pissed me off. There are two characters I, myself, wanted to kill. Forget about the animals doing it. I felt as if I was right there beside these people, but being invisible, there was nothing I could do to help.
This book was my worst nightmare. What a horrible way to die. Brought down by supposedly beloved pets. I love the short, action packed chapters. Made reading fly by real fast. This book was full of characters you run into every day. Would you trust a total stranger to help save you from a horror straight out of hell? I took advantage of an offer from Mr. Wright to download 5 free books.
Those won't last very long. I'm going to download every one of his books. I just won't read them in the dead of night.

Apr 29, Ami rated it really liked it. I received this book as a gift from Mr Wright but this in no way affects my following review. If you would like the same gift just go to his website, www. He actually sent 4 books, a short story and the first three chapters of another book. All I had to do was give my email address. I definitely got the best deal in that transaction and it's yours for the asking. This is the most unusual apocalyptic novel I have ever read and I pray that the world is over run with Z Disclaimer: This is the most unusual apocalyptic novel I have ever read and I pray that the world is over run with Zombies rather than this book becoming a fact.
As in all cases involving humans, there are horrible, despicable and disgusting actions along with a few truly compassionate and kind actions but you won't read about them here. You will have to get the book for yourself, sorry. There is one thing I want to say about the book though. I wanted more answers at the end so I will hope that means there will be another book written about those very things soon.
Hint Hint Mr Wright and keep writing other books as well, please. Jan 18, Claire Fun rated it liked it Shelves: This was a quick read - 2 hours - but I did spend most of it wondering if I should carry on. I liked the synopsis and the general idea - the animal apocalypse, basically, with humans suddenly becoming the bottom of the for chain - and following the misadventures of a group of people who happened to be visiting a zoo the day it happened.

The characters were incomplete cliches - violent homophobic tattooed Scotsman, uppity smug rich businessman, helpless yet beautiful tortured young lady, etc.
There was a cute kid who said cloying cute things that made everyone laugh. The dialogue felt unrealistic and the writing seemed stilted to me. All that said, the idea and the rough plot, while ridiculous and not entirely fleshed out, was quite fun, like a blockbuster film. I am a sucker for post apocalyptic of all sorts and haven't read one quite like this before, and in the over saturated genre, that in itself is pretty impressive.
Because of that I've upped from 2 to 3 stars. Hey, at least it isn't more zombies Jan 13, Craig Saunders rated it it was amazing. Here's a minor spoiler It's gruesome and visceral, full of violent death, but it's more than just a chomp-fest. It's really well written, at a cracking pace. It's a blast, too. A really easy read, and one I'd happily recommend.
A great way to pass an afternoon. Five stars for an enjoyable animal chomp 'em up. Craig Saunders, author of Rain. When the Animal Kingdom turns on you, It's not always the 4-legged kind you need to watch out for.
Oct 01, Pam K. Animal Kingdom is sort of like James Patterson's Zoo. Only this book concentrates a bit more on the human aspect of the situation.. Joe takes his son to the zoo for the day. While watching a snake exhibition, something goes wrong. The snake kills it's handler right in front of them. Joe tries to help, then realizes something is going on within the entire zoo. They get safely inside a building with a few other survivors. From the windows everyone can see all sorts of animals attacking humans.
The animals have gotten smart, learned to organized, and are not happy with their human "captors".

In this story, the small group of people are the focus. Yes, there are scene of animals attacking and trying to get to the humans. But the story is about the people themselves, and the inner turmoil within the group. What kind of person do you think you would be in this situation? Would you protect only yourself, or be a hero and save others at your own risk? Would you naturally become a leader and have people willingly follow you?
Or would you use bullying and physical force to lead and keep people in fear? Would you just be paralyzed with your fear? I enjoyed this book. Although it was suspenseful, I didn't find it scary enough. Nov 23, Joanne rated it it was ok. The idea that animals gang up and attack humans is ok, but there really is no story because humans wouldn't have a chance, would we? There's a lot more of them than there are of us.

The only character that isn't annoying is the kid. I think one of the four stories at the end does give a possible reason for this happening, but maybe not. It explains it happening locally, but not throughout the world. The book is disturbing and graphic, but that's how it's supposed to be, so I have no issue with that. There were a lot of issues with words in the wrong order or spelled incorrectly. There were so many it was distracting. I can't recommend this book. There's no logic to the story or to the actions of the characters.
See a Problem?
I was annoyed most of the time I was reading the book. Disappointing This book has no originality. The plot has been done over and over again. The characters are stereotypes with little to make them stand out. As if that's not bad enough, the middle of the book is plodding and repetitive. The only saving grace is that the author has a decent grasp of grammar and punctuation.
What happens when man is not top of the food chain anymore? Animal Kingdom is a horror novel about what happens when animals turn on humans. Imagine being at a zoo when this happens. Joe and his son Danny are visiting the local zoo when the animals start acting strangely. Enjoyable and fast paced horror I found this book by chance and glad I did.
Very fast paced horror novel with some good villains, human and non human. Give it a try, and hopefully like me, you'll be glad you did. Don't read this review if you haven't read the book. I thought the concept of a different kind of apocalypse exciting - NO Zombies! Unfortunately, the premise never quite materialized in "Animal Kingdom".
Animal Kingdom by Iain Rob Wright
So what influenced my 2 star rating? The action started quickly, rose rapidly What a fascinating group of characters with great potential! The main antaganist is a giant Silverback gorilla who quickly takes charge of all the rest of the animals. Trading one upright primate for another? He has turned into a brilliant general who is immediately able to use military strategy and tactics to attack the humans hiding in the zoo administration building.
And yep, man beats animal when it's all said and done.
