Suddenly my consciousness became aware of a soft, crooning voice. Nat King Cole was putting forth one of our favorites, and a beam crossed my mind as I remembered her smile and the wink.
However, whenever we are in large foreign cities, we will usually spend an afternoon or so exploring famous locations such as the Prado in Spain, the British Museum in London, and of course the Louvre in Paris. We also had admired such masters and their works like Diego Rivera murals in the National Palace in Mexico City and other places in the City. It just so happened that on this particular day, it was weather more than interest that sent us indoors to explore. For several days, Paris had been suffering under a mantle of depressing heat and humidity which we learned was normal for August in the French Capital: We knew it had to be climate controlled.
Having been in the city for over a week already, we knew the public transportation system fairly well, so finding the correct bus to the area of the museum was easy. We arrived mid morning, and already many patrons were lined up for tickets. This creation is a world attraction in its self. Designed by the internationally famous architect I. The museum proper was once used as a fortress, and was added on multiple times after being designated the National Museum in , and of course Napoleon became a celebrated contributor to the massive wing directly across from the original structure.
He also made countless contributions of confiscated art from conquered nations. We knew after reading about the National Museum ahead of our visit that we would never begin to see even a small portion of the over thirty five thousand objects housed in over half a million square feet of display area. If we could just see the statue of Venus de Milo and the Mona image that would make our day for sure. And now for the wink! After standing a while waiting to get to Venus, we finally saw what remained of her regal form. What a magnificent image she must have been when whole.
But, considering the years or so since her creation, I suppose we should be happy with what is left. After a lunch in the museum cafeteria, we knew it was time: Time to finally meet Mona. Or just a cold and lonely, lovely work of art.? We were actually going to see one of the most sought after treasures of history. Kings, Queens, collectors, dictators and. In fact she was stolen by an Italian activist, Vincenzo Peruggia, in , who thought she belonged in Italy where she probably originated. He hid the painting for two years before it wound up in a gallery in Florence. Elated, the Italians gave the image a grand tour of Italy, before returning it to France.
The now famous thief received only a token punishment. At that time, around six million people came to see her each year. Actually the line moved pretty well, and we passed the time with small talk, sometimes between ourselves, and sometimes with nearby patrons that spoke English. Closely surrounded by around twenty viewers, the first impression I got was how small the actual painting was, and in the center of an otherwise bare wall it appeared almost plain.
The countenance is one never to be forgotten. Of course we have viewed copies and photos of her zillions of times over the years, but to meet her face to face so to speak, seemed to make her come to life. As we stood there in awe, I could hear a couple exchanging comments beside me in English. I turned, and in my best Irish whisper said: This was one of these times. As we turned and began following the throngs out of the room, I leaned forward to the gentleman I had singled out, and whispered again much lower this time: Breakfast tickets and raffle tickets can be purchased in advance by calling and also will be available at the door.

It is a voice well suited to pop, country and folk. She has a great facility for harmonies. Her friend Pat Carroll often provides backing vocals. No musicians are particularly associated with Olivia Newton-John.
On stage and in the recording studio she works with session musicians and the playing is always very professional, if not particularly attention grabbing. Olivia explains how she came to do this song: The mutt knocks over a microphone stand and, allegedly, that sound can still be heard in the instrumental bridge near the end of the song.
Although they were engaged, the couple never married. Olivia Newton-John achieves a U. Two albums are released by Olivia Newton-John in — but one is aimed at the U. Again, a lot of material on this disc is assembled from earlier Australian and European releases, so Bruce Welch is still co-credited as producer with John Farrar. The Olivia Newton-John album devised for the U.
The Eurovision Song Contest means little in the U. A heartfelt ballad, this song is framed with a string section and harp but, by keeping the focus on the basic piano accompaniment, it is incredibly moving. It is the sound of an all-round entertainer courting a more general audience. It also sounds like it could be recorded by someone decades older than the 26 year old Olivia Newton-John.
However it is also impeccably polished, tuneful and endearing. A lachrymose lament like this shows the country influence has yet to completely dissipate for Olivia. From to John Farrar was part of a revived version of The Shadows. Since moving to the U. Her image may be part of the problem.
It is a love story about bad boy Danny Zuko falling for good girl Sandy Olssen. By the time the movie opens, Olivia Newton-John is 29 and playing a teenager. Her co-star, John Travolta who plays Danny , is The soundtrack augments the songs from the stage show with a handful of new compositions. Two of these, penned by John Farrar, are among the most successful moments. For the first time in her career she becomes a rock singer. Admittedly, it is still rock with a large dollop of pop mixed in. In Olivia Newton-John is awarded an O. Well, the movie itself was, but the music was very successful.
Subsequently, Matt Lattanzi works as both an actor and dancer. He also becomes romantically involved with Olivia Newton-John. Initially, this is a Los Angeles based import shop for Australian goods. Eventually, it goes bankrupt in and closes down in Davies is an expatriate Australian. The authors of the song are Steve Kipner and Terry Shaddick. The lyrics give Olivia some concern, but Davies talks her into recording it.
It is the no. Olivia plays the role of Debbie in the film. It is co-written by Steve Kipner and Peter Beckett. The couple had been living together for four years. Bizarrely, she is pregnant at the time — though that is not visually obvious. Olivia Newton-John and her husband Matt Lattanzi become parents with the arrival of their daughter, Chloe born 17 January Elton co-writes the song with his lyricist, Bernie Taupin.
The last-named, a pop song with a skipping beat, is the best of the bunch. The same weekend, she gets further bad news. A medical diagnosis confirms it is breast cancer. I covered all my bases. She then maintains homes in both the U. This leads to Matt and Olivia separating. The marriage ends in divorce in December She also co-produces the album with Murray Burns and Colin Bayley.
He is a gaffer head electrician and cameraman on movie sets. Recorded in Nashville, the album sees Olivia Newton-John revisiting country music. Multiple producers are used including John Farrar and David Foster. In the same year, Olivia Newton-John performs a number of concerts in Australia, sharing the stage with Australian pop star John Farnham and Anthony Warlow, a man better known for appearing in Australian stage musicals. Because I was an only child I was pretty insular and stubborn. When he is around 15, this prompts the lad to seek a new identity. I met Mike Barson hanging around Hampstead School. More line-up changes await the group in Mark William Bedford a. Mark starts to buy records when he is 11 or 12 and takes up the bass when he is When bassist Gavin Rodgers departs, Mark Bedford joins the band.
Mark Bedford knowns another drummer and recommends Daniel Woodgate. Daniel Mark Woodgate a. He and his younger brother, Nick, are raised by their divorced father. Woody gets his first drumkit when he is Parallel to this, Daniel and his brother Nick on guitar form a band called Steel Erection and play some gigs. Nick Woodgate is later diagnosed with schizophrenia so Daniel Woodgate uses his fame to act as an advocate for mental health causes. The band changes its name in Drummer Daniel Woodgate explains how the name is chosen: The set list was inspected and [guitarist] Chrissy Boy said: The definitive seven piece line-up of Madness is now assembled.
The members of the group are: The group is also sometimes referred to as The Nutty Boys. Mike Barson explains where that name comes from: Ska is a direct precursor of the better known reggae music. The differences between ska and reggae are: Madness is a band that grows up in and around Kentish Town, the NW5 district of London, where there is a large population of Jamaican immigrants.
So although the members of Madness are all white English boys, they are more familiar with Jamaican music than average British youngsters. The pop element in the sound of Madness has a distinctly British flavour. That was a huge inspiration. Suggs adds to the list of influences: Roughly analogous to American vaudeville, the British music hall was the domain of singers and dancers, storytellers and comedians, all round entertainers. This sort of chummy, knock-about humour is a part of the musical D.
Many Madness songs are intentionally humorous. This is, however, not entirely correct. In poring over the minutia of daily life in England it is almost inevitable that an element of social commentary — perhaps even outright social criticism — creeps into the Madness songbook. It also provides the group with a sense of balance. Although Madness record some cover versions, the bulk of their output consists of original material.
All the band members contribute to the songwriting, but to varying degrees. If there is a dominant figure in the songwriting department, it is probably Mike Barson. The fact that Madness start out signed to the 2 Tone label is significant. Ska music, even in its s heyday, was enjoyed by a cult following in Britain rather than a major audience. The revival of ska in the late s-early s is possibly more high profile.
The main driver is another U. The label name is not only a nod to its black-and-white graphics but the racially integrated membership of 2 Tone acts like The Specials, The Selecter and The Beat. Although Madness obviously shares their love for ska — a music originated by black people in Jamaica — they are all white boys with not a single person of colour in their line-up. Early in their career, Madness is linked to skinhead fans.
Madness quickly has to deny that they are racists and they disown skinheads and such extremists. The track is a lively slice of hard ska. Madness goes on a U. It is released by Stiff Records in October. The band works with the production duo of Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley. Their pop skills may improve on later releases, but their debut has the strongest ska flavour. Madness is a good pop group, but one of many. As a British ska act, their only real rivals are The Specials.
Another Prince Buster cover version, the original was released in Jamaica in This is a bonkers travelogue co-written by vocalist Suggs and keyboardist Mike Barson. The Nile, Cairo, an old barge and a toothless oarsman…A few mysterious images. This is a slicker product than the debut album.
It is co-written by vocalist Suggs and guitarist Chris Foreman. To seal the deal, the video for the song has saxophonist Lee Thompson suspended on wires, floating through the air like a demented angel. The trilling organ and twirly music seem at odds with the serious theme: Lee Thompson saxophone and Chris Foreman guitar. Actually the act was meant to be called Crunch!

Despite being appealing, none of these singles make the chart. It is released on 17 November. Their longevity provided a convincing counter argument.

Robert Johnson, an aspiring African-American blues musician, stands at the side of the road. He shivers — but it may not be due to the temperature. If a person is buried at a crossroad, should their unclean spirit return, the ghost will allegedly be unsure which path to take, sparing God-fearing folks from its depredations. Because Johnson predates rock, he also predates rock journalism.
Only two photographs of him are known to exist and there are no interviews in which his thoughts and views are preserved for history. Dodds also has a mistress, Serena, who gives him two more sons. Its roots lie in Africa. Negro slaves brought to the United States to work on cotton plantations bring their music with them. This is due to the harsh conditions faced by the slave labourers. The blues is a music of sadness. Yet is also about transcendence; it is about taking that sadness and finding a kind of beauty within it. By the time Robert Johnson enters the recording studio, slavery has long been abolished but many African-Americans still live in impoverished circumstances. Moreover, the blues is as much about emotional hardship as economic hardship.
All the songs Robert Johnson records are his own compositions. Additionally, he writes a lot of sexual innuendo cloaked in double entendres. Looking over that list, Johnson could pass for a rock singer or even a heavy metal artist. To modern listeners unfamiliar with Robert Johnson, his work can be challenging to absorb. There are no other instruments, no other musicians.
Many of the songs have a similar tempo and sound. It is really only with repeated exposure that more individual nuances become noticeable. Legend has it that Robert Johnson is very shy. Kagran's six-month production run in Mexico, said Stone, was a "trial" in both senses of the word. The "manana" philosophy was thoroly endorsed by actors who thought nothing of not showing up for work without notice.
The replacement and proper mainte- nance of equipment was another headache, along with general in- competence on the part of pro- duction staffers and lab techni- cians. Muit Sell Show- Television is show business. The sponsor has his product to sell. It is just as important to sell the show itself. Screen Jems topper, told The Billboard he did not think it likely that there ever would be a set of color film standards, but that like black ;ind white, each producer would use the method of his own choice from a selection of eight or 10 sets of possible standards.
He said that not only will there be variations between the way the same film will be received from different networks, but even between dif- ferent studios of the same net- work. Screen Gems, in its black and white films, extracted the best information from all sources be- fore setting production standards, and Cohn said the same would be done for color. He predicted that there would be an interchange of knowledge about color film among trade and scientific organ- izations, film manufacturers and labs, which would be pooled into a common body of accepted methodology.

Two male singers in operetta do good jobs in brief displays. Jack Entratter last week pre- sented a trial balloon as a fore- runner to several contemplated tailored operettas next year. The idea was good, even if the trial balloon, "The Student Prince, was punctured before it gained any altitude. It demonstrated one thing, it is folly to reach out for names of the past in staging a production.
This is one of those times. Jan Kiepura and Marta Eggerth might have been famous in this beloved operetta 25 years ago, but that was 25 years ago. Besides ap- pearing ridiculous as romantic young lovers, the pair— particu- larly Kiepura— no longer are up to the vocal efforts required. As a contrast, a talented group of young singers were assembled behind the stars.
Particularly fine in all-too-brief displays were Robert Grandin and William Ol- vis, baritone and tenor, respec- tively. It also demonstrated that a night club orchestra after only a couple of rehearsals, cannot furnish proper background music for a show of this type. If there's enough word of mouth bill could do as well at the door as it's doing on the floor. The Conrad dancers turn in well-executed three routines which display an accent on inter pretive dancing to the rhythms of blues, beguine, and calypso.

For this opening she came in with an act that just about doubled up the jammed room. And even if much of her new material was broken in here for the first time it looked as if she finally has approached the commercial cafe status. She started off with her old material, then went into her first new routine, "The Lady in the Ladies' Powder Room. It has always seemed a muddled and sprawling play.
However, the Webster treat- ment has certainly brought clar- ity to what has often been con- siderable chaos, and the final bat- tle scenes, which on occasion can be melodramatically ridiculous, have a real, spine-tingling bite. It is a very difficult play to put on. Miss Webster deserves to take a whole set of bows on her achievement. In any event, the character of the scoundrelly Richard offers a tour de force which has been es- sayed over the years by great stars of the theater. So there is no good reason why Jose Ferrer should not hang up his portrait in the gallery. His malevolent monster'is as twisted in mind as in body, sardonically humorous in maliciousness, and he plays him for the most part for slyness and cunning, rather than the melo bombast to which the part has often been treated in the past.
His Richard is always vivid and stimulating. Ferrer has racked up another fine job of acting. On the somewhat confusing dis- taff sideof the bloody doings, Jessie Royee Landis is outstand- ing as the widowed Queen Eliza- beth, and Margaret Wycherly and Florence Reed contribute likewise ably.
